Chapter 5

20:57, 8 January 2021

Leila POV

"So what's the play tonight? Are you going the old school flirt across the bar, bat your eyelashes"

I touched up my lipstick in the review mirror.

"Yeah, he's a tough case so I'm gonna have to go all-in" I sighed out of frustration" Okay so there is a great corner where you will get all angles"

He was proving to be one of the hardest cases I've ever been hired to work on, he was great at covering his tracks but I just had a feeling something was off.

"Right, hopefully, tonight we'll get what we want"

I checked my blonde wig in the mirror.

"Are you ready?"

"As I'll ever be," Marc said getting out of the car and walking ahead of me, so we didn't enter together, and taking his spot by the bar on the other side to start with surveillance.

I take a seat at the other end of the bar, where I'm in Jakes's view, and wait, ordering a drink for myself.

"You would have to be the only woman that looks confident drinking alone" I hear Marc mumble through my earpiece "That's possibly one of the most dangerous things about you, yet concerning"

I send him a glare across the bar for cc'ing the smile down, taking a sip of my drink.

Asshole.

I look up and meet Jakes's gaze and send him a seductive smile and wink at him.

He just nods back politely and instantly looks away, looking in Marc's direction and then back down, calling the bartender over.

No lingering gaze.

That's an unusual reaction.

I look at Marc and we exchange confused glances.

I get up and move closer, taking a seat next to Jake, sitting so that all my best assets are in view, crossing my legs toward him, so that my legs were on show.

"Hi, I couldn't help but notice you are alone, mind if I join you?"

Jake turns to me and looks at me, he looks slightly... uninterested "Sure, it's a free country"

This is going to take longer than we initially thought, he's one tough act.

———

A bunch of small talk later, and that's exactly all it was, small talk.

He didn't get handsy.

Or flirty.

I had begun to think we had gotten everything wrong.

"I'm going to the bathroom" I hear Marc announce "Use the safe phrase if you need me"

Marc got up and left the bar and walked in the direction of the restrooms.

"Excuse me," Jake said not long after and headed towards the restroom also.

"Uh Hi" I hear Marc's voice continue as I hear another male voice though the piece "Just was waiting on some friends, but they had to raincheck as they got stuck at work"

"Would you like to join me for a drink?" I hear the second male voice say, who I now recognize as Jake's "I would appreciate it, I would much prefer your company over that woman that's joined me, I find you much more attractive, if it's not too bold of me to say"

More attractive?

It took me a moment to realize, but then it hit me.

He wasn't cheating with women.

That's why it wasn't working.

It made all made sense now.

He was into men.

I snorted to myself.

Pigs.

Now they're cheating women with each other.

———

Monica sat across from me, playing with her pen nervously.

"You said you had an update for me?"

I nodded and pulled out my dossier I had put together the last week with text messages and pictures.

Marc had given Jake his number, so it only solidified my thoughts.

And these texts got deep.

Poor Marc, ever the professional though.

After all that we knew exactly what we were looking for and cryptic financials finally were clear.

It all came unraveled from there.

"Well, I have evidence that Jake is unfaithful"

"Do you know who she is?" Monica asked slowly, eyes dark and broken.

"Its multiple," I said before pushing the findings in front of her "And they're men"

She looked down at the paperwork and stared up at me "Excuse me?"

I sat there unsure of how to be any more delicate as I already was.

"He's seeking relations with other men"

She let out a yelp and her hand flew to her chest and she started hyperventilating.

I jumped up panicked.

No matter how many times I've been in this situation, it never gets easier.

I run to her side, trying to get her to calm.

------

Marshall POV

My office door bursts open and Leila comes storming in.

"Do you fucking mi-"

"I need your help, Monica she's, she's hyperventilating, I don't know, she won't stop. I -" She said rushing her words then she ran back out of the office.

Without a thought, I followed her to Monica's office, where she was gasping for air.

"MON, hey, hey, it's ok," I said leaning down in front of her, then turned to Leila "What the fuck you do bitch?"

"Excuse me asshole? I didn't do shit, I did my job, don't be so insensitive, she just found out her husband is cheating on her"

I glance at the table and see documents, pictures of Jake with men.

I look up confused.

"Call an ambulance," I said calmly.

I hear Leila frantically dial and start talking to the operator.

"He's sleeping with men" Monica mumbled between gasps, grabbing my hand.

Sheesh.

Even I was winded by that one.

What the fuck.

"It will be okay, don't worry, we got you ok?"

------

I sat across from Leila in Monica's office after she had gone with the paramedics for observation.

It's such a shame she's a bitch, because she's hot.

"Well that's some fuckin' bullshit" I said as Leila's gaze met mine.

"Gay men married to women" She shrugged "It happens more often then you'd care to know"

I pulled a face and nodded "I know that I'm not stupid, I just didn't expect it to be hers"

She raised her eyebrow "The fact that men are not who they seem to be is the reason I have a job"

"Oh yeah? what do you know about men, you run around luring them into divorce"

"I know that you're obnoxious and deluded" She snorted "I don't lure them, they're already cheating, I just confirm it"

"That's bullshit cause you know when someone's cheating, it's obvious"

She shook her head "Sometimes they're better at covering their tracks, like you, for instance, you cheated on Kim multiple times right? And only once were you caught"

"Bitch that's none of your business" I grunted.

"I don't hear you denying it though"

I glared at her as she stood up, grabbing her bag and picking up the documents.

"It was an absolute pleasure meeting you," She said sarcastically then started to walk towards the door before stopping and reaching into her bag, pulling out a business card out and turning back to me.

"Can you please update me on Monica as soon as you find out? It would be appreciated" She said with a concerned expression, handing me the card and then leaving.

I stared down at the business card.

IB INVESTIGATIONSLeila Tate, Private Investigator

I snorted.

Irresistible bait.

More like Irresistible bitch

Oh no, I got one better.

Incubus bitch.

Go fucking figure.
