nick texts matt back on he way to the library after the bell and warns him to act normal and absolutely not talk to her.

he agrees, but feels like there is a ton of bricks in his stomach when he walks in and sees her in her chair.

nick sees him freeze in the doorway and beckons him over to sit at the computers which are about the furthest away from her in their corner as they could be.

matt sits down and stares at his computer, not daring to look back at her.

chloe comforts her and tries to keep her busy. james walks into the library to say hi to them before his 2nd period class like everyday, and is surprised to see matt and kaia in the same room.

he makes eye contact with kaia and smiles at her, diverting his attention to matt.

"sup, matt?" james asks.

everyone looks around at eachother, the tension in the air could cut glass.

"james." he nods, not turning around from the computer.

"whatcha working on?" james leans over matt's shoulder to see his empty screen.

"haven't started yet." he glances at james.

"don't rush yourself, man. want some help? i don't mind skipping one class." james offers disingenuinely.

"ummm, i'm probably good. thanks for the offer." matt has turned around in his seat out of peer obligation.

he avoids looking at kaia, though he is practically directly facing her. only thing in the way is james standing there looking at him.

"alrighty. have fun." james smiles, turning around and bending down to peck a kiss on kaia's lips while he knows matt is still watching him.

matt clenches his jaw and kaia seems just as surprised as he was. they never kiss in public. most definitely not around matt.

james waves goodbye to everyone and walks out of the library.

before turning back around to his computer, matt briefly freezes and makes eye contact with kaia, who looks stunned and humiliated.

for a second, she forgot she was supposed to be ignoring matt. she smiles awkardly at him like she would when they were friends and another guy would hit on her. he smiled back, also completely checked out for a few seconds.

she realizes what she did and immediately stops smiling, covering her mouth and turning to chloe who was fascinated by watching the whole interaction.

matt whipped around in his chair and put in his headphones, desperately trying to load up his class assignment and act like nothing happened.

he looks over at chris who mouths the words "you good?" to which matt shakes his head no and looks back at the computer.

the rest of the period consists of matt completely zoned into the computer and working away, nick and kaia talking, and chris attempting to flirt with chloe. which didn't totally fail, he managed to get a solo invite to her apartment after school. (yay chroe)

as soon as the bell rings, kaia zips out of her seat and into the hallway before the opportunity to accidentally smile at matt arises again.

everyone else in the library packs up and heads to their cars to go out for lunch.

kaia is waiting anxiously in her car for chloe. she had told james she needed a girls day, that's also why he didn't drive her to school today.

while waiting in her car, she plays music and watches the doors for chloe, most likely going to be coming outside with the triplets.

she tunes the noises of everything else out, focusing on her music so she won't be stressed when she inevitably sees matt walk outside.

and like clockwork, sad fucking music comes on when she sees him. he walks outside smiling and genuinely laughing with nick and chris, chloe following behind. when the group sees kaia already sitting in her car, she turns up the music to ignore them.

god rest my soul, i miss who i used to be. the tomb won't close, stained glass windows in my mind, i regret you all the time. i can't let this go, i fight with you in my sleep, the wound won't close. i keep waiting for a sign, i regret you all the time.

by this point, matt had diverted his attention to the loud music coming from inside her completely closed, windows rolled up, car. he kept walking with nick and chris to the minivan while chloe went off towards kaia's car. but, matt kept his ears open and listened to the song.

if clarity's in death, then why won't this die? years of tearing down our banners, you and i. living for the thrill of hitting you where it hurts, give me back my girlhood, it was mine first.

chloe smiles when she, too, recognizes the song. she hops in the passenger's seat and looks at kaia who is currently a mess. she had been playing dumb and looking at her mirror so she wouldn't make eye contact with matt.

"turn the music down! i can't hear myself think!" chloe shouts over the car speakers.

kaia cranks the volume way down and looks over at her bestfriend.

"honey." chloe frowns at her.

"i know." she wipes her face, attempting to stop any potential tears from forming.

"time, babe. give it time. you'll be okay, everything happens for a reason." chloe rubs her shoulder.

"i've been thinking about something." kaia says.

"what's that?" chloe asks.

"my- our tattoo. the one with matt. what do i do? what if james eventually sees it and asks?" kaia asks for advice.

"well, for starters, the tattoo is on your skin, not james'. he shouldn't be upset. and if it makes you unhappy, cover it up." chloe suggests.

"no, it doesn't make me unhappy. it makes me so happy that i get sad. i look at it and i remember the day matt and i got them at justin's friends house. we were only 15. i remember the whole day, and everytime i think about how happy we were, it makes me smile to the point i want to sob my guts out and never think about matt ever again." kaia rests her head on the steering wheel.

"no matter if you're on speaking terms or not, you and matt had a soul tie. you can never really recreate that bond. so, even if he isn't in your life anymore, i say you just leave the tattoo." chloe suggests.

"you're probably right. i'm always so scared of what james will think of everything with matt, though." kaia admits.

"has he ever given you jealous vibes? like, does he act overprotective and jealous towards other guys?" chloe asks.

"not yet. but matt did." kaia sits up and looks at chloe.

"i think you just need to get your mind off of matt. where are we going for lunch?" chloe asks as kaia backs out of the school parking lot, the triplets left a few minutes ago.

"chick-fil-a for sure." kaia nods.
