"kaia?" chloe repeats.

"hm? what?" kaia sits up.

"i asked what are you dreaming about? you were sleep talking and kept asking me what time it is." chloe states.

"oh, um.. nothing, i can't remember." she scratches her head.

"well, it's only 5:30. it is a bit early but i guess we can get up now." chloe responds.

"wow, that light is so bright." kaia mumbles as she stands up out of bed.

"yeah, i turned the light on because you wouldn't stop mumbling and i was trying to wake you up." chloe says as she walks into kaia's bathroom.

chloe turns on the shower and sings along to her music as kaia is still waking up in the other room.

"that was a weird fucking dream." she grumbles and walks around the room grabbing all her things to get ready.

she eventually hears chloe finish up in the shower and walks into the bathroom once she knows chloe is covered.

"can you pass me your vape?" chloe asks while she brushes her wet hair with a towel covering her body.

she hands it to chloe and stares at herself in the mirror.

"you okay?" chloe asks as kaia steps into the shower and throws her clothes out the curtain.

kaia turns on the water and lets it run down her face for a few seconds.

"yeah. i mean, i don't know. i had a really weird dream last night and i can't stop thinking about it." kaia responds.

"what was it about?" chloe asks, putting her clothes on.

"matt." she says, still very tired and struggling to stay awake this early.

"what happened? was it about the fight?" chloe begins drying her hair.

"it felt so real. it started with us doing like, exactly this right now. we got ready for school then got breakfast, then i saw him in the hallway and he came up to me and kissed me out of nowhere." kaia sighs.

"was it a happy dream? or more like you were scared and didn't want it to happen?" she asks.

"i'm not really sure. i honestly just don't even know why i'm dreaming about him like that, i don't even like matt like that. i mean, we're not even friends anymore. plus my date with james is today." kaia turns off the water and grabs her towel.

"well, you know what cinderella says." chloe laughs.

"what the hell are you talking about? it's too early, chloe." kaia steps out of the shower, covering herself with the towel.

"y'know. a dream is a wish your heart makes. i know that shit is corny, but if you're dreaming about kissing him, maybe you just want to do it in real life." chloe steps out of the bathroom for kaia to get dressed.

"no way. i really do like james, this isn't just me avoiding my problems. i really actually like james for real." she says to chloe through the door.

"i'm not saying you don't, but when's the last time a little love triangle ever hurt anyone?" chloe laughs, kaia opens the door for her to come back in when she is finished putting her clothes on.

"um, hello? folklore? my mom literally pointed out the james and betty thing yesterday right before matt picked me up." kaia laughs, brushing her hair.

"i'm surprised she remembered that. but good for her. anyway, did it really end that badly? taylor did say she pictured james and betty ended up getting married." chloe smiles.

"yeah, after he cheated on her and ruined her life. no thank you." kai rolls her eyes.

"so you're saying you're team matt? not james?" chloe smiles at her again.

"no. you tricked me and got me all messed up. i'm team james prince. NOT team matt." kaia sighs.

"in a few months from now, don't say i didn't try." chloe shrugs.

"whatever that is supposed to mean, i'm not letting you get to my head. i'm giving james a real shot. and forgetting about matt. no matter how nice the dreams are." she whispers the last part.

chloe slaps kaia's arm and the girls laugh. they finish getting ready and head to starbucks. for real this time.

since they woke up early, the girls decide to eat in the restaurant this time, not just use the drive-thru like every other morning. they order their food and have nice conversation before it's time to leave for school.______________________________________

the girls finish their starbucks and head towards the school. chloe can tell that kaia looks increasingly nervous as they get closer.

"it's gonna be fine, kaia. we have all 3 classes together and we can leave together for our spare if you're that nervous. don't worry about matt." chloe assures her.

"no, you don't get it. what if he comes up and tries to talk to me? i'll vomit from nerves and i really like my makeup today." kaia pouts.

"kaia. more than anything, he cares about you. the texting was one thing, but i can't see matt purposely putting you in an uncomfortable situation like that." chloe looks over at her.

"really? not, i don't know... maybe trying to kiss me? that was pretty uncomfortable." kaia sighs.

"was it? you had a dream about it. in all honesty, i think you kinda liked it." chloe smiles and taps kaia's arm.

"cut it out, i'm driving. and no, i didn't like it. friends don't kiss." kaia says.

"well maybe you two aren't friends, then." chloe smiles.

"well, duh. we're basically strangers walking around on earth knowing everything about eachother." kaia slouches in her seat a bit.

"no, i mean maybe you're more than friends. or, were. should've been. whatever." chloe laughs.

"give it up. me and matt were about as much "more than friends" as nick and i are. it's just simply not true. i see all three of them as my big brothers. well, did." she corrects herself.

"just don't overthink it. i bet if you just wait it out, things won't be awkward anymore and your friendship with matt will be back to normal." chloe tries to make her feel better.

"not if i'm with james. i can't be friends with matt if i'm with james. it's just disrepectful to him." kaia justifies.

"you're thinking so far ahead of time. just focus on what's currently happening. not your possible relationship with james, and not what matt might do. stop worrying about the future and focus on how you feel now." chloe says.

"i know, i know. just please stay with me all day, okay?" kaia asks.

"duh." chloe smiles back.

they pull into the school parking lot and kaia sees the triplets van pulling into their usual spot.

"no way." kaia turns the steering wheel the complete opposite direction and parks on the other side of the parking lot.

"dude. now i have to walk way further." chloe complains.

"oh well." kaia smiles, grabbing all her things from the car.

the two girls get out of the car and lock it, beginning to walk inside. kaia is trying her absolute hardest not to pay attention to the triplets voices close behind her.

she grabs chloe's hand and squeezes it tightly as they walk inside together, knowing matt can see her.

"chloe, i can't do this all semester." kaia whispers in chloe's ears.

"calm down. i'm right here with you." chloe whispers back.

"i know, but in my dream last night, i lost you in the hallway and that's when matt saw me." she whispers again.

"then just don't let go of my hand." chloe smiles.

they keep walking until they reach the school and kaia would've normally held the door open for the triplets, but she is avoiding looking at matt at all costs and runs inside with chloe.

kaia hears another familiar voice close behind, it sounds like they're talking to nick. she keeps her face forward and tries to ignore the urge to look back at him.

"hey, guys! how've you been?" nate walks towards the two girls.

"busy, y'know." kaia smiles nervously.

"you okay? you look a bit nauseous. i'm pretty sure matt has advil, i can grab some for you, he's right there." nate points towards the triplets and smiles at them, noticing matt is staring at the ground.

"uh, no. it's okay, thanks nate." kaia smiles.

"you sure you're doing okay?" nate asks.

"you haven't heard anything? chris didn't text you, none of them?" chloe asks him.

"no. why, what's up? why aren't you guys all walking together?" nate asks a bit louder, trying to include both groups.

kaia slaps a hand over nate's mouth and he looks confused. she pulls him down a less busy hallway she knew the triplets don't go down in the morning and chloe follows.

"dude, what the hell is going on? are you guys all good? are y'all fighting or something?" nate asks, still confused.

chloe explains the whole situation and the worried look on nates face grows as she explains. he can tell how unsettled kaia looks the whole time listening to the story being told over again.

"oh, damn. i had no idea, nobody told me." nate says after chloe is done explaining.

"yeah. it's pretty messy right now. we don't want people to be picking sides or anything though, plus we're still close friends with nick and chris and everyone. it's just a bit awkward at the moment." kaia says.

"should i say anything to him? i can be your little messenger birdy." nate smiles and flaps his imaginary wings.

"no, no. we're just waiting out the awkwardness." chloe laughs.

"okay, well i do have a class with matt and chris right now, so i'll see you guys later. library second period?" he asks as he begins to walk away.

"always." kaia smiles, turning around with chloe.

"i'm surprised nobody told him." kaia shrugs.

"yeah, me too." chloe agrees.

the girls start walking towards their english class and see james and nick walking in the same direction.

"kaia!" james calls to her so she'll see him.

nick and james walk towards the girls and james immediately hugs kaia, chloe and nick smile at eachother.

"didn't think we were gonna catch you two before class, we lost you earlier." james smiles as they all walk together.

"yeah, we just had to tell nate something. i swore i heard your voice, must've been distracted." kaia laughs.

"this is my class. see you guys at the bell." nick smiles at them all and walks into his class.

"excited for english?" james asks the girls.

"for sure." kaia sighs, earning a small laugh from james.

the group walks into their english class and they all sit together at the back.

"hey, is something up with matt? he seemed off this morning when i was walking around with them. no one told me anything, they just kept avoiding talking about you two." james whispers to the girls as the teacher begins the lesson.

"i'll tell you tonight." kaia whispers back.

they smile in agreement with eachother.

"so, where are you two lovebirds going tonight?" chloe asks with a huge grin on her face.

"i'm taking kaia to this really nice place downtown, i'm super excited." james smiles at her.

"yeah, i can't wait." kaia agrees.

"that sounds like fun. what time are you going? need to know how much time i have to get my girl ready." chloe nudges james.

"i'm picking her up at 7. the reservation is at 7:30." james responds.

"okay, fancy. reservation and all. i like a prepared man." kaia smiles at him.

"only the best for the best." he looks at her.

"okay, barf. stop being happy infront of me. that's enough for today." chloe sits back in her seat.

james and kaia laugh and they sit through the rest of the class whispering together.
