23 | Let it happen
23:21, 26 June 2024Filing the report against Chris was one of the hardest things I had ever done. Sitting in that small, sterile room at the police station, recounting the details of the abuse and terror I had endured, felt like ripping open a wound that was only beginning to heal. But with every word I spoke, I felt a bit of the weight lifting off my shoulders. The officers were kind and understanding, and their seriousness reassured me that I was doing the right thing.
Once the report was filed, I took a deep breath, feeling a sense of relief mixed with a lingering anxiety about what would come next. I knew it wasn't over, but I had taken the first step toward reclaiming my life. And I couldn't wait to tell Tim.
Our shift started soon, and I knew Tim would be arriving any minute. I waited in the hallway, my heart pounding with anticipation. The moment I saw him walking in, heading toward the changing room, I felt a surge of excitement and nervousness. I didn't want to wait any longer to tell him.
I hesitated for a moment outside the men's locker room but then pushed the door open and walked in, ignoring the raised eyebrows from a couple of employees who were just leaving. Tim was at his locker, his back to me. I took a deep breath and walked up behind him.
"Tim," I said, my voice trembling with excitement.
He turned around, a look of surprise on his face. "Chen? What are you doing in here?"
"I did it," I said, my words tumbling out in a rush. "I filed the report against Chris."
Tim's eyes widened, and then a broad smile spread across his face. "You did? Lucy, that's amazing!"
Before I could stop myself, I threw my arms around him, hugging him tightly. "Thank you for supporting me," I whispered into his ear.
Tim hugged me back, his arms strong and comforting around me. "I'm so proud of you," he said softly.
In that moment, without thinking, I leaned back and pressed my lips to his. The kiss was brief, just a soft brush of lips, but it sent a jolt of electricity through me. Realizing what I had done, I quickly pulled away, my face flaming with embarrassment.
"Oh my God, Tim, I'm so sorry," I stammered, backing away. "I didn't mean toโ"
Tim's surprise turned into a warm smile, his eyes twinkling. "It's okay, Lucy," he said gently. "Really."
I felt my cheeks burning even more. "You're just a friend to me, Tim. I don't know what got into me."
Tim chuckled softly, his smile never wavering. "Hey, it's fine. Sometimes emotions get the best of us."
I looked down, biting my lip, feeling utterly mortified. But when I glanced up, Tim was still smiling, and there was a softness in his eyes that made my heart flutter.
"How about this," Tim said, his tone light but with a hint of something more serious. "After our shift, how about we go out? Just as friends."
The way he said it, the way his eyes sparkled, I knew he was asking for more than just a friendly outing. My heart skipped a beat, and despite my embarrassment, I felt a surge of happiness.
"I'd like that," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
Tim's smile widened, and he nodded. "Great. It's a date."
I left the changing room feeling lighter than I had in months. The rest of the shift flew by, my mind buzzing with anticipation. Every time I caught Tim's eye, we shared a secret smile that made my heart race.
When the end of our shift finally arrived, I could hardly contain my excitement. I quickly changed out of my uniform and met Tim by his car. He was leaning against the hood, waiting for me, and the sight of him made my heart skip another beat.
"You ready?" he asked, his eyes twinkling.
"More than ready," I replied, smiling.
We drove to a small, cozy coffee shop a few blocks away. The place was quiet, with a warm atmosphere that made me feel instantly at ease. We ordered our drinks and found a secluded corner to sit in.
For a while, we drank our coffee in comfortable silence, the unspoken words hanging between us. My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions, and I could feel Tim's eyes on me, his concern and care palpable.
Finally, Tim broke the silence. "How are you feeling, really?"
I looked down at my coffee, then back up at him. "Relieved, mostly. Scared, too. I don't know what's going to happen next, but filing that report was the right thing to do."
Tim nodded, his expression serious. "It was. And whatever happens next, you'll get through it. You're strong, Lucy."
As we sat in the coffee shop, Tim's presence was a soothing balm to my frayed nerves. The way he looked at me, with his ocean-blue eyes filled with genuine concern and kindness, stirred something deep within me. Those eyes reflected a steadfastness that I had rarely encountered. It was as if he could see right through my defenses, right into my heart.
The moments of silence between us were filled with a comfortable understanding. Each time he reached out to hold my hand or offered a reassuring smile, I felt warmth spreading through my chest. It was confusing, this mix of emotions. I had always seen Tim as a friend, a safe harbor in the storm that had been my life with Chris. But now, sitting across from him, I was beginning to see him in a new light.
I couldn't help but compare him to the men I had known before. Tim was different. He didn't just listen to my words; he understood my unspoken fears and doubts. His support wasn't just lip service; it was a tangible force that made me feel stronger, more capable of facing the challenges ahead.
As we sat in the cozy corner of the coffee shop, a sudden idea popped into my head. I turned to Tim with a playful glint in my eyes. "Do you wanna play a game?" I asked, breaking the comfortable silence.
He seemed a bit surprised, raising an eyebrow in curiosity. "A game?" he echoed, his interest piqued. "Sure, what kind of game?"
"So, we ask each other 21 questions," I explained, leaning forward with excitement. "It can be the most random things that come to mind, anything to get to know each other better. I mean, I only know you as a coworker, but there's so much more I'd love to learn."
Tim's eyes sparkled with amusement as he nodded. "Alright, sounds fun," he said meaningfully. "Let's do it."
"Great! I'll start," I said happily, feeling a thrill of anticipation. "How many kids do you want?"
Tim laughed, clearly caught off guard by the directness of the question. "Okay, that's a random question," he admitted, still chuckling. "But I think two would be perfect."
I felt a rush of excitement at his answer. "Oh my gosh, yes! I agree!" I said, my enthusiasm bubbling over. "Two sounds just right to me too."
Tim smiled, his eyes softening as he looked at me. "Alright, my turn," he said thoughtfully. "If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?"
I bit my lip, considering his question. "I think I'd love to live in a small countryside town," I replied dreamily. "Somewhere with beautiful nature, where you can hear the birds from your window. It would be peaceful, and you could watch the sunset over the mountains every evening."
Tim's eyes seemed to light up at my answer. "That sounds amazing," he said. "I've always thought about living somewhere like that too. There's something so calming about the nature."
We continued our game, the questions becoming more and more random and revealing. "What's your biggest fear?" I asked, my voice softening as I realized how personal the question was.
Tim hesitated for a moment, his eyes darkening slightly. "Losing the people I care about," he admitted quietly. "I've lost some important people in my life, and it's a fear that's always with me."
I reached out and squeezed his hand, feeling a deep connection in that moment. "I'm sorry, Tim," I said gently. "That's a really tough thing to go through."
He gave me a small, grateful smile before asking his next question. "If you could have dinner with any person, living or dead, who would it be?"
I thought for a moment, imagining all the possibilities. "I think I'd choose my grandmother," I said softly. "She passed away when I was little, and I'd love to have the chance to talk to her as an adult. I feel like there's so much wisdom and love that I missed out on."
Tim nodded, his expression thoughtful. "That's a beautiful answer," he said. "I'd love to have dinner with my grandfather for similar reasons. He was such a big influence in my life."
As the game continued, our questions ranged from lighthearted and fun to deep and introspective. "What's the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to you?" I asked, laughing as Tim's face turned a bit red.
"Oh, that's easy," he said, grinning. "In high school, I once walked into the wrong classroom and sat there for a full ten minutes before realizing my mistake. And it was a freshman class when I was a senior. The looks I got were priceless."
I burst out laughing, imagining the scene. "That's hilarious!" I said. "I think my most embarrassing moment was tripping on stage during a school play. I was the lead, and I just went down in the middle of my big scene."

As we left the coffee shop and walked to his car, the night air was crisp and cool, a stark contrast to the warmth of Tim's presence beside me. I felt a flutter in my stomach, a mix of excitement and nervousness. My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions, trying to make sense of this newfound awareness.
Sitting in his car, Tim's hand found mine once again. His touch was gentle but firm, and I couldn't help but feel a surge of emotion. His ocean-blue eyes met mine, and I saw something thereโsomething deeper than friendship. It was a look of unwavering support, yes, but also something more, something that made my heart skip a beat.
"You know," Tim began, his voice breaking the comfortable silence as he started the car, "I've always admired your strength, Lucy. Even when things were tough, you never gave up."
I smiled, feeling a flush of warmth spread through me. "I didn't always feel strong, Tim. There were times when I felt like I was barely holding on."
He squeezed my hand gently. "But you did hold on. And now, you're starting to reclaim your life. That's something to be proud of."
I nodded, taking a deep breath. "I guess so. It's just...scary, you know? Not knowing what comes next."
Tim glanced at me, his eyes filled with sincerity. "Whatever comes next, you'll face it. And you won't be alone."
I looked out the window, the city lights blurring as we drove. "I can't believe how much my life has changed in such a short time. Sometimes it feels like a dream."
Tim chuckled softly. "Well, if it is a dream, it's a pretty good one."
We both laughed, the sound lightening the mood. As we pulled up to my apartment building, Tim turned off the engine and faced me. "Luce, if you ever need anything, don't hesitate to call me. Day or night."
"I will," I promised, feeling a lump form in my throat. "Thank you, Tim. For everything."
We sat there for a moment, the silence comfortable and filled with unspoken words. Finally, Tim reached out and gently cupped my cheek, his touch warm and reassuring. "You're going to be okay, Lucy. I believe in you."
Tears pricked at my eyes, and I leaned into his touch. "Thank you, Tim. That means more to me than you know."
Before I could second-guess myself, I leaned in and pressed my lips to his. The kiss was soft and sweet, and I felt a jolt of electricity run through me. Tim responded gently, his hand slipping to the back of my neck, pulling me closer. The kiss was brief but full of promise, a silent understanding passing between us.
When we finally pulled away, Tim's eyes were soft and full of warmth. "Goodnight, Luce," he whispered, his forehead resting against mine.
"Goodnight, Tim," I replied, my voice barely a whisper.
I stepped out of the car, my heart lighter than it had been in a long time. As I walked into my apartment building, I turned back and saw Tim watching me, a small smile on his face. I waved, and he waved back before driving off into the night.
As I made my way up to my apartment, a sense of peace settled over me. For the first time in what felt like forever, I felt hopeful about the future. I knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, I wasn't alone. Tim would be there, every step of the way, helping me reclaim my life.
And as I lay in bed that night, I couldn't help but smile at the thought of his eyes and the warmth they held for me. I realized then that my feelings for Tim were more than just gratitude or friendship. It was love, a love that had been growing quietly but surely, and I knew that whatever the future held, we would face it together.
