Chapter Thirty-Nine

Chapter Thirty-NineI grab the black beanie and throw it on over my curls. Veronica reaches up and fixes a couple strands that just won't stay under. My eyes widen when she tip toes to kiss me softly. Our fingers intwine together and she pulls me down the stairs and out of her house, the entire time laughing about how much fun today is going to be. She waves down a parking valet, asks for my car, and within seconds we're driving past the gates. "So what's with the parking valet?" I ask, leaning back casually in the passenger seat. Veronica had insisted she drive since she didn't want to tell me where we're going. "Dad's rich as shit and can afford it. He is never home to use it, but I guess it's just something that he has to have. I've asked for a house staff, but he's denied it, saying that there's no point in having people wait on nobody. Yeah, explain that logic towards the parking valet," Veronica says snidely, her nose pinching just at the mere mention of her father.I'm curious about her background, but I know it's not the right time to ask. Besides, we're out and trying to have a good time. "So where are we going?" I don't have the faintest idea of her plans. I bring down the visor and look at myself in the mirror, fixing my glasses. I push the mirror back up and notice Veronica smiling at me. "How would you feel about contacts?" "What?! No, no way," I shake my head. "I can't stick my finger in my eye. No way." "Oh come on, I wear contacts. You don't see me complaining," she says. "Trust me, they aren't that bad. Please, Harry? I just want to be able to see your green eyes easier." I let out a low breath. How do you argue with that? "I don't have any money on me. I'd have to go to my house and ask Mother first." "Don't worry about it. I've got that part covered." I shift awkwardly in my seat and push my glasses up again. I think I must have bent them somehow because they're not staying on properly. "I'm not comfortable with you spending money on me," I tell her. "Harry, have you seen my house?""Yes, but that's your dad's money." Veronica reaches into her pocket and pulls out a shiny black card. "Do you see this? This is technically my dad's money. So don't complain." "But, it's not the same. You're-"Harry!" Veronica exclaims, turning towards me. I realize we're at a stop sign. "Would you just accept it? Seriously, I promise you that it's no big deal. Plus, I'm taking you to the same place where I got mine. They know me and my dad. It'll be fine," she says stubbornly and I know there's no arguing with her."But I just feel awkward not buying it. I mean it is on my face right? It's not like you have to do it," I mutter, wringing my hands together. Veronica huffs out. "Well there's only one solution." Before I know what she's doing, she grabs my glasses off my face and snaps them in half. I gasp when she hands them to me, the pieces laying in my palms. "You just -you broke my glasses!" I exclaim, picking up both halves. They're snapped cleanly in half. My mouth doesn't seem to close. I'm so dead when Mother finds out. "Now I can pay to have them replaced with contacts," Veronica laughs and starts driving again. She's unbelievable. She broke my glasses just so she could buy me contacts?! "I can't believe this," I whisper, still in shock. "Well believe it, Harry. You'll thank me later," she smiles. I only hope she's right. ~~~ We get to the optometrist's office and Veronica holds my hand as she leads me to the front desk. She's been holding my hand a lot lately and it sends my stomach into butterflies. I love holding her hand. Veronica is recognized immediately at the front desk and within ten minutes, I'm seated in a giant brown chair with a doctor in front of me. He explains that I need to get my eyes retested for the contacts and makes me go through the process of figuring out just how bad my eyesight is. For the next thirty minutes, he switched slides as I put my face against a device and repeatedly asks me "one or two?" I try to not repeatedly kill myself over his annoying voice. In the end, he tells me that my contacts will only take a couple hours to be ready and dismisses me and Veronica. This place must run extra quickly because when I had gotten my glasses at a different place, it took a couple days. Or, and this is the option I believe most plausible, they're doing it quickly because Veronica is the customer. "We'll pick them up later," Veronica says once we're back in the car. "Oh good, now I can go through the entire day not being able to see," I bite back sarcastically. I don't like the idea of not seeing what's ahead of me. "What is your problem?! Why do you always do that?! Make something negative out of something that's not that big of a deal? Why can't you just accept it and move on?" She snaps at me and I gape at her. Where did that come from? "I'm trying to be nice to you and you're just going to sit there and play the fucking pity card?! How pathetic is that?!" "Pathetic? You think I'm being pathetic? Why don't you just get out of my car and leave me alone then?" I can't help but start getting mad at this Veronica, the one who screams at me for no apparent reason. "Oh, and what? You'll drive? You can't see shit, must I remind you?" Veronica tilts her head back and laughs. I stay quiet, knowing she's right. I can't just drive away. I can't see the road ahead of me. "Well you don't have to be so mean." I wrap my arms around myself and stare out the window. Veronica sighs. "Okay, I'm sorry. I just hate how I'm trying to do something nice for you and you have a way to throw it in my face. I know I probably shouldn't have broken your glasses, but you weren't going to give me any other chance." "That's not true, I was already going to agree with you. You're hard to say no to," I mumble, hating that she literally drives me insane and there's nothing I can do against it. "Am I?" Veronica muses and I turn towards her. A wide smile breaks out across her face. She leans towards me, her brown eyes set on mine. "Kiss me," she whispers. I pull awkwardly at the strings on my jeans. "I...um," I swallow, glancing at her pink lips. I can't think. "Thought I was hard to say no to?" She whispers, her breath hot across my face. Her hand cups my face, her fingertips brushing against my skin. I shiver in her hand. I hate how as soon as she touches me I forget what I was supposed to be mad about. "Well?" She smirks, her lips just a couple inches away from mine. I shut my eyes and lean forward, pressing my lips to hers. I feel her smile into it and it makes my stomach flutter. When she pulls away I'm left breathless. "For someone with no experience, you sure do kiss damn well," she giggles and pecks me on the lips once more before turning back to the steering wheel. She takes my hand, our fingers filling each other's spaces perfectly. "Thank you?" I say awkwardly and she gives me a wide grin. "You can thank me later," she winks. I can't even begin to process what she means by that, but whatever it is, I know it must be good. Damn, I've got it bad.
