Night One

21:47, 1 July 2025

The house was dim now, bathed in soft light and the quiet rustling of blankets and baby onesies. It was just past 9 p.m., but it already felt like 3 a.m.

Lucy stood at the kitchen sink rinsing out a bottle, her hair in a messy bun, a milk stain on her oversized tee. From down the hall, Naiomi's cries picked up — a higher, needier tone this time. Not the soft little squeaks from earlier.

Tim appeared behind her, Tyler cradled against his chest in a swaddle that looked one solid shake away from coming undone.

"She's up again," he said softly.

"I got her," Lucy replied, drying her hands quickly. "You've had Tyler all night."

Tim gave her a tired smile. "It's okay, we'll trade after. Charlotte's out cold, at least."

As Lucy disappeared down the hall to get Naiomi, Tim sat down with Tyler in the living room, rocking slowly and watching the shadows flicker on the walls.

A minute later, Lucy returned with Naiomi in her arms, bottle in hand, her voice soft as she sat beside Tim. "You ever think we'd be here?" she asked.

"Here as in... no sleep, spit-up central, and too tired to eat dinner? Definitely not," he chuckled, shifting Tyler slightly.

She laughed, even as Naiomi fussed. "I meant more like... a real family. Like this."

Tim glanced at her, his face settling into something quiet and sure. "I think I always hoped. I just didn't think I deserved it."

Lucy blinked, meeting his gaze. "You do. More than you know."

Tyler stirred in Tim's arms and let out a squeaky snore, making both of them laugh quietly.

"You're kind of a natural," she said, motioning to him.

"Thanks," Tim said. "I've been winging it since Charlotte started calling me 'Dad' last week."

Lucy's heart caught, and she smiled at the mention. Charlotte had whispered it one night while brushing her teeth — not a big announcement, not a question. Just a statement. As if it had always been true.

The room fell quiet again, the kind of calm where love grows between the messy in-betweens.

Lucy looked down at Naiomi, who was finally settling, her tiny fingers curled tightly around one of Lucy's. "They don't even know how much they've changed everything."

Tim nodded, brushing Tyler's dark hair with a finger. "They saved something in me I didn't know was broken."

They stayed like that a while — no TV, no phones, just the rhythm of breath and the comfort of being beside the person who made the chaos make sense.

Later, after placing the twins in their bassinets and checking on Charlotte for the tenth time, they curled up in bed together. Lucy's head rested on Tim's shoulder, and his arm wrapped around her.

"Tomorrow will be chaos," she mumbled.

Tim kissed the top of her head. "Good. I'll survive anything if it's with you."
