Home, At Last

21:46, 1 July 2025

The drive home from the hospital was quiet, careful. Tim's hands were tight on the wheel, checking the rearview mirror every ten seconds even though they were only going twenty-five down residential roads. In the backseat, Naiomi and Tyler were tucked into their infant carriers, barely a peep between them. Charlotte sat between them, her face full of pride, as if she were guarding royalty.

Lucy glanced over from the passenger seat, a quiet smile resting on her lips. Her body ached, her eyes were heavy, but her heart — it was completely full.

"Doing okay?" Tim asked, glancing over.

"I've never been more tired," she admitted. "Or more at peace."

Tim reached over and gently squeezed her hand.

When they pulled up to the house, Angela and Westley were already waiting out front with balloons tied to their mailbox and a banner taped to the garage: Welcome Home Naiomi & Tyler! Charlotte squealed when she saw it.

"You guys!" Lucy laughed, tears threatening.

Angela shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Just a little something."

Tim opened the back doors and started the complicated, clumsy task of unbuckling the carriers. Lucy stepped out slowly, and Charlotte ran to help, practically bouncing on her heels.

Inside, the house had been transformed. Soft lullaby music played through the speakers, and a few essential groceries had been dropped off. Celina had even left a bottle of wine on the counter with a note that read: You earned this. Just... not tonight.

Lucy stepped inside, holding Naiomi now, taking in the space she'd once thought too quiet. It was no longer that. It was alive.

Charlotte led the way to the nursery — a room once filled with "what-ifs" now filled with tiny clothes, a double bassinet, and a rocking chair in the corner. The walls had been painted in warm sage green with soft stars above the cribs.

Tim set down Tyler, who let out the softest grunt but quickly fell quiet again.

Angela and Westley gave their congratulations and hugs, and soon it was just the four of them — Lucy, Tim, Charlotte, and the twins — in their home.

Lucy sat down on the edge of the couch, taking it all in. "We're a family now."

Tim came up behind her and kissed the top of her head. "We always were. Now we're just... more."

Charlotte carefully leaned down and kissed both of her siblings. "Can they sleep in my room?"

Tim laughed. "Not just yet, Champ."

"Eventually," Lucy added, "if we survive the first few months."

Charlotte nodded solemnly. "I'm ready."

Lucy looked over at Tim. He had Tyler nestled in one arm, rocking slightly without even realizing it. Their eyes met — and in that look, so much passed between them: love, gratitude, awe, exhaustion, and the quiet acknowledgment that this was only the beginning.
