Six Candles and One Surprise
06:14, 17 May 2025Charlotte's sixth birthday was a big one—her first party with friends from school and her favorite theme: space princesses. The backyard was strung with galaxy-themed streamers, silver balloons, and a bouncy castle that took up almost all the grass. Angela and her husband brought Jack and Emmy, Celina came with sparkly cupcakes, and even Jackson, Tim's manager, stopped by.Lucy stood near the grill, helping serve snacks while Tim played party host—wrangling kids, organizing a scavenger hunt, and even donning a ridiculous plastic crown at Charlotte's insistence. It was going perfectly.Until it wasn't.From the corner of her eye, Lucy saw the gate creak open. Her heart stopped when she saw her mother walk in, holding a cheap, gift-bagged toy and a forced smile. She hadn't been invited. In fact, they hadn't spoken in over a year.Tim, noticing Lucy freeze, stepped in quickly. "Who's that?"Lucy's voice dropped. "My mom. I didn't invite her."Charlotte was across the yard, oblivious, squealing with joy in the bouncy castle. Lucy felt the air leave her lungs. Her mother approached casually, as if this wasn't a complete ambush."Hi, Lucy," she said too brightly. "Heard it was Charlotte's big day."Lucy crossed her arms. "Who told you?""Your cousin posted about it. I thought I'd stop by, give her this," she held up the bag, "and say hi. I'm still her grandmother, after all."Tim stepped forward subtly. Not aggressively, just enough to show presence."You should've called," Lucy said tightly. Her mother scoffed. "And risk you saying no?""That's exactly the point."The tone had shifted. Angela noticed from across the yard and began ushering kids inside for cake. Tim gently leaned toward Lucy and whispered, "You want me to walk her out?"Lucy hesitated. Her hands were shaking."No. I'll do it."She turned to her mother. "You don't get to just show up like this. Charlotte doesn't even know you. You made choices years ago that I'm still cleaning up after.""I'm trying," her mother replied."No," Lucy said, firmer now. "You're making yourself feel better. That's not the same thing."There was a long silence."Please leave," Lucy said, her voice cracking only at the very end.Her mother looked as if she might argue—but then her eyes flicked to Tim, to the party, to Charlotte's laughter echoing from the other side of the yard. She sighed, turned, and left without another word.Tim walked over, placing a hand gently on Lucy's back. "You okay?"She nodded slowly, watching the gate swing closed. "I will be."And as they returned to the celebration—lit candles, smiling children, Charlotte's giggles rising above the noise—Lucy felt it.Stability.Someone beside her.Not just for the party, or the moment, but maybe... for good.
