Chapter 7

05:29, 23 December 2019

To her luck they are keeping Merle locked up in the fore room. He haven't seen her yet and she will keep it that way as long as she can help it.

Carol decided it would be good if they picked up school work again. So now she is sitting in the middle of the cellblock with Carl and her. Right now she is teaching them survival class. What to do when you get separated, what to eat and what to stay away from.

"If you come across an dead animal in the woods. Is it safe?" She asks and Carl answers.

"No."

In contrast to him, Sam leans back in her chair with her arms crossed in front of her. Bored out of her mind.

"Hey. Samantha! This is important, pay attention." Carol says in a authoritative voice.

"Everybody and their moma know that. I found it unimportant to answer. So I didn't." She says with an aded shrug. Carl looks at her, mouth gaping.

"So you think it is not important to learn how to survive when seperated from the group?" Carol asks frowning.

"How often do I have to tell y'all folks?! I already know how to handle myself! And why do you even care?! I am not sofia, dumb bitch!" She growls, having enough of beeing treated like a oblivious little kid and all the fake caring.

Her chair falls back as she pushes up to stand and runs up to her cell. She goes to the corner and slides down the wall to sit behind her sink with her head in her hands.

"Let's continue carl." Carol says holding back her tears. Carl looks at her hesitantly and nods.

Daryl walks in with some kill. "Looks like were gonna have some nice stew today!" he calls and Carl looks up with a smile.

"Everythin' alright here?" he asks Carol when she doesn't look up.

"Yes. Just school work. Thought we dragged it out for long enough." She says but can't hide the sniff.

"Sam said some awfull things to Carol." Carl says, sniching like always.

"Hey!" Carol says to Carl feeling it was unfair of him.

"Sam?" daryl asks confused.

"Oh, right noone told you yet. Samantha, it's the name we have her - the new girl." Carl says.

"That so?" Daryl says and looks up to the upper cells "I'll talk to her." he ads and starts to head for the stairs.

"Daryl, no. I don't think it's really nececerry. It's fine." Carol stutters.

"Wha' she say?" Daryl asks.

"Nothing much, kids beeing kids, just leave it." she says.

Looking at Carl, Daryl knows it's not ‚Nothing much' and nods to himself.

He walks into the seperated era where they are also holding Merle in.

"Whew Baby-Brother. Still Playin the housewife I see." Merle chuckles.

"Fuck off. 'for i scratch your meal for the day." Daryl says with a frown.

He puts the squirrels and bunnys he caught on the table and starts skinning and gutting them. He leaves the Rest for Beth and Carol to cut up and cook something nice.

"Don't ya think it's time to stop yer bullshit act and start being a decent human?" Daryl asks wiping his hands on a towl. Merle looks at him with a frown but Daryl can see the hurt behind it.

"I tried to kill one of these folks and the other left me on a roof to rot." he growls.

"We came back! How often I gotta tell ya?!" Daryl grits.

"Whatever, fact is these people don't want me here. So why the hell did we come?!" Merle starts again.

"Cause i'm one of ‚these people'. And I don't want to lose you either so best just make them like you or at least tolerate you." Daryl says and Merle grumbles to himslef and walks to the corner of his cell.

Daryl leaves into the main ‚living' area and walks up the stairs. He walks over to Sams cell and knocks against the metal Bars.

„So, Sam." Daryl says, starting a conversation.

"How d'you come up with tha'?" he asks and leans against the Doorway. Sam only pulls her knees to her chest and puts her arms on them.

"Silent treatment huh?...look... I never planed to stay away. I only needed time to figure out how I can bring the people, important to me, together. I was always gonna come back." he explains and steps into the cell to take a seat on the bed.

"I don't f***in' care." she grumbles.

"What did ya just say?!" Daryl asks in a stern voice.

"I said! I. Don't. F***in' care! What'cha gonna do. Hit me?" she hisses.

"You have some mouth on ya, young lady. But I would never! Ever put my hands on you like that!" Daryl says seriously. "You hear me? Never." he says looking in her eyes.

"I know what yer doin'. Lashing out on people so they push you away. But it's not gonna work kid. Not with these people. Not with me. So ya better get yer act together." he continues his long speech, not missing the tear that escapes her eye and she hurries and wipes it away.

"Now. You wanna tell me, what you said to Carol?" he asks in a serious voice.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean what I said. Sometimes, I just have this rage inside that I can't hold back." she says in a hurry "i bet she hates me now." she ads and lays her head on her forearms.

"Nah kid. She don't. She's worried. But if you tell me what you said, then I can help you make it better." he tells her. Sam sniffs and looks up.

"I told her that I can look after myself, that I don't need her to teach me. That I am not sofia and..." She explains but stops.

"And?" Daryl asks.

"I called her a dumb bitch." she says and Daryl breathes out. This kid is so much like him, it scares him.

"I'm sure that if ya go to her and tell her that ye'r sorry, she'll forgive ya." he assures her.

"Ya think?" Sam asks and he nods. She stands up and walks out. When shes at the door he stops her.

"I like 'Sam'. It suits ya." he says with a smile and she smiles back and goes to look for Carol.

She apologises and Carol embraces her. At first she is all cramped up in Carols arms but soon softens against her. Over her Head Carol looks at Daryl thankfully, who is standing on the stairs.

He nods at her and walks back up. After their little moment, Carl and her start playing with his Tennis-ball. They act like they are Baseball players and throw it so the other can catch it.

Later they start throwing it over the middle row of the upper ground to see who gets it over more often. Rick walks in and nods for the adults to follow him to the adjoined room where Merle is kept.

"Can't we come ?" Carl whines.

"No. Not this time Buddy." Rick says.

"Let's play Carl. I bet they only have boring stuff to talk." Sam tries.

She doesn't want to go there. Afraid Merle will see her. Daryl ruffles her hair when he passes her and points a warning finger at Carl. The boy does to much dumb shit.

"Let's play Tag. Or i can teach you to skate!" She says trying to get his interest away from the other room.

"Alright, show me." Carl says and Sam grins. She runs upstairs and gets her Board.

It doesn't take long to see thatCarl is ridiculisly bad at it. He couldn't stand on the Board to save his life.

"Stop laughing!" Carl says, as again he nearly face-plants.

"It's not that hard! Look." She says and gets on. In a Swift move She Kicks off and gracefully rolls a few feet and stops.

„Yea, for you Show off!" Carl grumbles.

„Whatever, i bet you have other things you're good at." She says with a chuckle and nudges him as she passes him on her way back up to put her Board away. Daryls voice echos through the cellblock.

„Well hes stayin'! So best get used to it!" he yells and then he walks up to his cell next to Sams. She walks out of hers and goes to his.

„You okey?" She asks and he looks up and away again.

„'m fine." he grunts and plays with one of his arrows.

„Can you teach me how to make one?" She asks noding to The arrow. Daryl looks at her for a few seconds.

„Sure. Got a knife on ya?" he asks and she nods with a wide grin. He switches from sitting on the bed to the ground and pulls his bag to him. Sam hurries and sits down next to him. She pulls out her knife and Daryls eyes widen.

"What yer doing with a knife dat Big kid ?" he asks in shock. But then again, it's the Freakin Zombie apocolypse.

"Found it on a dead guy." She shrugs.

"Don' hurt yerself." he says in a grumble.

"Yer gonna show me or wha'?" she drawls.

"Alriiight. Smartass." he chuckles and starts.

He only has to correct her a few times and her arrow is done.

"Look at that. Natural at work." he nudges her and she grins shyly.

"Here." she says and hands it to him.

"Nah i's yers." he says and waves her off.

"really?" She asks with a frown.

"Ya made it. Ya own it." he says and instandly her face brakes out into a wide grin.

She jumps up and runs into her cell. She looks around and finally decides to hang it on the wall opposite to her bed.
