Chapter fifty: Blanket of stars

"Yo, can I have one of those?" Dylan asked me as I puffed my cigarette outside. I instantly shook my head. "You did not just ask me that" I said with absolute shock.

"Uh- didn't you hear me? I absolutely asked you that" Dylan responded coldly "come on, you're acting as if you hadn't smoke at that age. I do remember"

"Get your facts right love I was sixteen" I grimaced whilst throwing him a cigarette to his absolute joy. "Don't you tell Julie for the love of god and don't ever mention my name in a sentence that involves cigarettes" I warned the smirking teen.

"Sure. My lips are sealed" he responded bluntly. He then grabbed ahold of my lighter and lit it. The interaction made me cringe but I wasn't his parent, I was his sister so I felt I could be more lenient.

"You got a girlfriend or anything?" I asked with a wiggle of my eyebrows which made Dylan's face falter.

"No ew. If smoking means I've got to listen to you talk I rather not" he stated nonchalantly

"Jesus you're a grumpy ass now your balls have dropped" I jeered which made him grit his teeth.

"I will tell you something though because you know how much I love to ruin somebody's day" Dylan deadpanned deviously, the cigarette poking from his lips.

"I know a secret you don't know" he beamed whilst flicking his ash. "And boy are you either going to hate it and run away because of your commitment issues or absolutely love it"

I furrowed my eyebrows "what do you mean Dylan?"

"That's for me to know and you.. to find out" he replied back flatly "anyway nice talk sis I'm now going to my room"

Sticking out my tongue I mocked him "yeah enjoy that room you little shit"

Ruffling my hair I began to pace "what does he even mean?"

Evan appeared out of nowhere and hugged me from behind "what's wrong with you it looks like you've seen a ghost" he remarked which made me sigh.

"Nothing just Dylan being an ass. Remind me again why I said he could stay all summer. There is still three weeks until he goes home"

Evan shrugged "because you thought he would be the same sweet, chubby cheeked child like before"

Scoffing I nodded in agreement "you're correct about that. But damn if Ember is like that then I'll need therapy"

Evan grabbed a smoke from my now quickly emptying packet and sat on the grass "I think I'll have to go grab some milk if she is like that" he joked which only made me open my mouth in shock.

"Nice, pull out the run away card" I bemoaned which earned a laughing Evan beside me.

"Are you sure? I feel all we do as of late is leave you both at home" I asked Ember who was watching monsters inc with a 'joyful' Dylan by her side.

"Mommy Juliette is really kind, she plays barbies with me" Ember stated with a glinted smile. "Plus I know something that you don't know mommy" she beamed with Dylan smirking beside her.

Swallowing thickly I wondered what these two were planning amongst one another and it only unnerved me. I turned to Evan who was mouthing words towards them I couldn't understand. It was very suspicious and I hoped I wasn't just being an idiot.

"Ahh sorry I'm late- Juliette panicked as she walked in with messy hair.

I raised my hand to stop her with a smile outstretched "it's fine, if anything we should set your babysitting times to later so you make it on time" I joked which made Juliette laugh lightly.

I clasped my hands together and smiled "well kids we are now off. Be good and Dylan no horror movies or I will be the one murdering you" I sneered which made him frown

"Please do!" He responded back happily which made me click my tongue in response and roll my eyes.

I took Evan's hand and we made way to his car which was a black Jeep, it was a new addition and I know Evan was besotted by it. "Okay so where are we going ?" I asked curiously

Evan grinned "just wait, you'll love it"

The wind blew in my face as I opened up the window with my hand now making waves like a child does during car rides. The stars shon down from their peaceful settlement whilst the moon graced us with its beauty.

"You seem like you're in a trance tonight" Evan stated with a soft, curt smile.

Placing my hand on his thigh I nodded "I'm just happy Evan. Truly happen that I think my heart could burst" I chuckled admirably

Evan's deep dimples creased in response "I'm glad you're happy. I hope I'll continue making you just as happy"

The car then came to a stop which perked up some confusion inside of me. "Evan, where are we?" My eyes staring into the desolated surroundings full of tree's.

He took my hand and started walking with me "there is a place I want to show you. Can you close your eyes and trust me?"

I nodded "always"

Luckily the summer heat made the night air warm, I would of hated walking around here in the freezing cold. Though any place with Evan was my happy place in which I would stay forever.

"Right, open your eyes"

When I did my heart melted as the world stopped spinning around me. Tea lights were placed in a heart shape with a checkered blanket on the floor- this was all situated by a small, glistening lake. "I-it's beautiful. Did you do this?" I stammered

Evan kicked a stone with his foot and nodded "I wanted to make it romantic. I hope the heart looks like a heart this time rather than a sloppy mess" he remarked, remembering the banana from a few days ago.

"It's much better than the banana" I giggled

We sat down on the blanket and stared at the stars, they were more prominent here and it was a true delight to see them. Evan taught me all the little things in life were beautiful after for so long thinking life wasn't worth living and everything in it was ugly.

"Maeve I wanted to talk to you" he broke the silence nervously with his hands lightly shaking. Frowning I grabbed his hand to calm him.

"From the moment I met you I knew you were going to be somebody special. The way your smile freezes me in my tracks, the way you laugh is a beautiful sound to my ears and the way you love- it's joyous and adoring. From that moment I didn't ever went to let you go, from that moment I wanted you to trust me to be the best person for you and you did and I'm sorry I let you down on so many occasions" Evan said thick with emotion and love spurting from the seams.

Blushing I scooted closer to him and cupped his cheek with my hand, admiring those soft brown eyes and the nervous look that hadn't left since getting here.

"And that is why..."

There was a few silent seconds with Evan heavily breathing before he asked me to stand up. Confused I obeyed him and watched as he stayed on the floor.

"Evan what are you doing?" I asked with the breath in my lungs hitching in my throat.

"I'm doing something I should of done a very long time ago.." he said with a smile "I just hope you don't make me cry" he chuckled with childish humour.

I frowned and watched as he changed his position to a knelt one and that's when I came to the realisation. My heart skipped a beat and my whole body began to shake from adrenaline and nerves.

"Maeve will you do me the honour of marrying me and being my wife?" Evan asked with the cutest, most adorable face spread across his features. His eyes were melting into mine with the upmost warmth, as if looking into my very soul.

I took a shaky breath in and felt all the blood in my body rush to my feet; my skin now feeling numb but in a good way. It was almost like someone was carrying all my weight and I was floating. I had dreamt all my life about the moment I would meet someone who loved me just as much as I loved them. Who treated me like a princess and ironically proposed to me under a blanket of stars.

"Y-yes I will marry you"
