47: Regulus Black - Runaways Part One
17:45, 21 May 2022Warning! This is part one of two!
Note: the only Regulus oneshot that this book features! It's simply because I came up with the idea and absolutely loved it, so I felt as though it deserved a spot in this oneshot book.
House: Ravenclaw
Growing up, Reg was always interested in Lord Voldemort's ideologies. He and his family believed in pure-blood supremacy, and Reg was desperate to become a Death Eater so as soon as he turned sixteen he was blessed with his mark. He became a servant to the Dark Lord.
During our last year of Hogwarts however, things started to change. Despite being a Death Eater, and showing interest in pure-blood supremacy he fell in love with me, a muggle-born Ravenclaw. I too fell for him, but I knew what he was so I knew it was best to stay away from him. We had managed to be together long enough to know we were in love, but his dream kept us from being together for life. As the months passed I found it harder as I missed him terribly, wanting to be able to hold him and kiss him like we could when we were together. I continued to watch him from afar, and noticed that as soon as September of seventh year he changed massively.
He kept his head down and seemed to always be on his own. Whenever I went into the library to study he had his head in a book, sat among the dark bookshelves of the restricted section. He was there again today and I'd managed to come up with an excuse to need a pass into the restricted section from McGonagall who approved, so I slipped in and approached his table. "What are you reading?" I asked from behind him, him jumping out of his skin and slamming the book shut with a loud bang. A bright blush appeared on his face much to my amusement, him quickly looking back down to his desk. "What's it about?" I asked, gesturing the book.
"It's nothing," he said, shoving it in his bag.
"Oh really? Because it seems as though you've made a lot of notes about it," I said, picking up a piece of parchment that had his scribblings on.
"It's nothing!" He shouted, snatching the parchment from my hand and shoving it in his bag as well. "I- I have to go," he said quickly, turning and running from the restricted section. I watched him go, realising he had left a book behind.
"Magick Moste Evile," I muttered the title to myself, furrowing my eyebrows. I flicked open the book to a page Regulus had marked. The underlined sentence merely said 'Of the Horcrux, wickedest of magical inventions, we shall not speak nor give direction.'
"Hey!" Regulus' voice made me jump and whirl around quickly. He snatched the copy from me quickly and ran away again, out of the library. Since that encounter I wanted to find out what a horcrux was but I had absolutely no luck.
After the Christmas break was when I really began to notice a difference in him. He was almost refusing to even talk to his other friends who were rumoured to be Death Eaters, which made me worry slightly as the last thing I wanted them to do was to turn on him. His behaviour as well as the research in the library was intriguing me so a few weeks later when I found him in the restricted section I decided to confront him.
"Why have you been sneaking around so much?" I asked him with a huff, once again surprising him. He immediately tried to cover up all his research, closing all of his books quickly.
"I haven't," he lied and I raised an eyebrow.
"Yes you have," I said firmly. "Why?"
"Why do you care?" He asked bitterly and I felt a slight sting in my heart. "Sorry that was... unnecessary."
"Yes it was," I said simply, folding my arms. "Because the truth is... I do care."
His eyes widened and were glued to me as I sat beside him. He glanced from me to the books he had laid out in front of him and back again. "Meet me near the whomping willow, midnight," he said simply before standing, packing his bag and walking away. I remained seated, unsure on what to think but still decided to follow through with his request.

The wind was cold as I exited the castle at midnight, heading down to the large vicious tree and seeing Regulus standing in front of it with his bag. "Regulus," I called out to him, feeling nervous as we had not met up on our own like this since we broke up. He turned and watched me approaching, then surprising me by taking my hand and leading me to the edge of the Forbidden Forest.
"We should be safe here," he said lowly, looking around.
"Safe? What's that supposed to mean?" I asked, a little worried.
"Listen (y/n) I- I need to tell you something and I need for you to listen," he said, grabbing my shoulders.
"E-er... okay," I said nervously, my heart fluttering slightly.
"I still love you. I've not stopped loving you, and since we broke up I've come to realise so many things," he said, catching me completely by surprise. "I needed to tell you before I go that I-,"
"'Go'? What do you mean 'go'?" I asked desperately.
"There's something I need to do. Something serious, that might result in my death," he said and panic rose within me.
"What?! No Reg, you can't!" I said desperately, clinging onto him.
"I have to! If I don't do this then he- he wins... he can't win (y/n), you have no idea how horrible it is," Reg whispered, his voice cracking a little. I knew immediately he was talking about Voldemort. "If I can't bring him down myself then I have to do what I can to help whoever eventually does."
"Reg you're scaring me," I said honestly, clinging onto him.
"I should've listened to you, right from the start, I'm so sorry I didn't," he whispered and I cupped his cheek lovingly.
"Don't go Reg, please," I whispered, looking him directly in his dark eyes. Like magnets we pulled each other in for a passionate kiss, our lips moving perfectly in sync. Sparks flew around my body like wildfire as we held each other tightly, almost refusing to let go. Our lips parted but our arms remained wrapped around each others, not wanting to let go. "Why... why do you think you have to go?"
"Since last summer I came to realise... he wasn't what I thought he was. He was nothing more than a murderer. He's evil (y/n), I've never seen a man do those kinds of things to people- I didn't even know it was possible but he- that monster just-," he could barely speak, hiding his head in my neck and holding me tightly. "I can't let him continue (y/n). I've had my suspicions for a while now, but what happened over Christmas confirms it."
"What suspicions... what happened?" I asked desperately, seeing a mix of fury and upset in his eyes.
"He tried to kill Kreacher," he said and I raised my eyebrows, knowing how fond Reg was of their house-elf, knowing how loyal and protective they were to each other.
"W-what- why?" I asked desperately.
"I can't tell you. If you know that just puts you in danger. Being here with me now could put you in danger-,"
"I don't care, there's no place I'd rather be, I- I still love you Reg," I said desperately, hugging him tightly. "Wherever you're going, take me with you."
"There'll be no going back," he whispered.
"I don't care. I just want to be with you, and I think you're going to need my help," I said somewhat cheekily and a small smile appeared on his lips. He pulled me in for another kiss, it feeling just as loving as the first.
"Okay, I'll tell you everything. But we have to leave tonight," he said and I nodded. I went back to my dorm to collect all of my most important items before heading back to where Reg was, him still standing by the Forbidden Forest. "This'll be a lot to take in, (y/n)," he warned me and I nodded, willing to go through with it.
Reg started by explaining what happened to Kreacher, recounting Kreachers tale exactly as he told him. He went on to explain that he had suspicions of Voldemort having created a horcrux to gain immortality, and I remembered seeing that word in one of the books in the restricted section. He told me that what happened to Kreacher was proof that there was some horrific object Voldemort wanted to be concealed, and that he thought it to be a horcrux. His plan was to get Kreacher to take him to the cave, to take the horcrux and to destroy it. "Reg that sounds incredibly dangerous," I whispered and he nodded.
"You'll be much safer if you stay here (y/n)... it's probably best you don't come-,"
"There's no chance I'm leaving you," I said firmly and he smiled.
"Okay... here's what we do."

I was pacing back and forth in the safe house, checking my watch every two minutes and seeing the hands slowly tick towards midnight. The plan was for Reg to get Kreacher to take him back to the cave, and for them to retrieve the horcrux so he and I could find a way to make it disappear. Voldemort assumed Kreacher was dead, so it would be unlikely for him to think that anyone would know where his horcrux was hidden meaning Reg could hopefully sneak in, take it and sneak out again.
Reg insisted I stay at our safe house with our suitcases, ready for us to make a quick escape just incase Voldemort did notice that something wasn't right. We had decided to head for Scandinavia, us having put a pin in a world map to help decide. I was almost pulling my hair out with worry as it reached 23:55 and there was still no sign of him. I knew it was going to be dangerous and neither he nor I knew what he was truly going to face - we only had Kreacher's description which wasn't much.
Suddenly however I heard the distinct knock from my boyfriend and I rushed to the door, horrified to see him slumped against Kreacher who was struggling under his weight. "R-Reg! What happened?" I asked quickly, dragging my boyfriend inside and the elf quickly following.
"M-master drank a potion," Kreacher said, terrified for his masters safety. I knew they were more than just servant and master, the two were friends.
I laid Reg down on the bed, froth coming from his mouth. His body was twitching as I searched frantically through our medicine box, trying to find a potion to help him. When I found it I quickly poured it down his throat, him coughing slightly as he swallowed. My heart stopped when he laid still in my arms and for a moment I thought he was gone. I almost started crying until he thankfully woke up, still seeming incredibly out of it. "(y/n)... did we do it?"
"Yes, yes you did it, well done," I praised him happily, Kreacher handing me the locket. "We have to leave though Reg, we have to leave now."
"Yeah, could you just give me one moment with Kreacher?" He asked and I smiled, nodding. I knew they'd want a heartfelt farewell, and Kreacher was loyal enough to Reg for us to know that he'd never reveal our location. From the next room I heard a few tears being shed and I knew Reg wasn't right for the Dark Side. He had a soul, he had feelings.
After a moment I was called back in and I too said my farewells to Kreacher, him then apparating on the spot. "So... are you ready to start our new life?" I asked my boyfriend and he picked up the locket, grasping it firmly.
"I'm ready."
