Chapter 17 ~ How Could I Not Know That?

How Could I Not Know That?
“What happened? Why are you upset? Who must I torture and kill slowly?” I asked. Mirima was the strongest person I knew, she never cried. Ever. I pulled her into a hug. She sobbed quietly on my shoulder and then stepped back and composed herself, slightly. She still had tears running down her face, though.
“May I come in?” She asked. I nodded. She walked in and sat on my bed. I closed the door behind her, walked over and sat next to her.
“The last time I saw you cry was when we brought back a set of articles from the ruins of Mithlond and we found your mothers necklace.” I said. Elrond had sent out a party to travel to Mithlond (our homeland) to bring back any articles that weren’t destroyed for the survivors. She sniffed.
“Yes, I remember.” She said. She touched the necklace that hung around her neck. It was a thick golden chain and had a green jade flower in the middle. In my opinion it was quite ugly but it was the only piece of her mother apart from a hairbrush and a mirror that we could find.
“Well… It’s a long story.” She said uncertainly. I raised an eyebrow.
“You woke me up at three in the morning to tell me, ‘It’s too long of a story.’ Honestly?” I said loudly. “Now that you have woken me up at three in the bloody morning, we have all the time for you to tell me why you are so upset.” I said. I do not like being woken up when I’m supposed to be sleeping. It bothers me… A lot.
“Okay, well. Do you remember when I went to Lorien with Elrond to experience what a meeting was like?” She asked.
“Of coarse I do, you were gone for two months. I was so missed you so much.” I said. I gestured for her to go on.
“It started there. The head of the race of men were expected there. Gondor had no king at the time, so the Steward was expected to be there. He was a fowl man, completely arrogant and cruel. His first son however caught my fancy. He courted me for the time, in secret of coarse. He asked his father, the Steward of Gondor, if he could have my hand in marriage. The evil man refused to bless our hand in marriage. So we wed in secret-“ She was cut off by myself.
“Whoa. Hold it, slow down, stop. You are MARRIED AND YOU DIDN’T TELL ME!!!” I yelled. She put a finger to her mouth and made an “Shhhhh!” sound.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you, but we both swore not to tell anyone. I couldn’t tell you. Where was I? We wed in Lorien and have seen each other secretly every year since then.” She said.
“Hold on.” I said confused. “Before I ask for details, of YOUR WEDDING, WHICH I’M FURIOUS ABOUT. I CAN’T BELIVE I MISSED THE BIGGEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE. What’s his name and why are you so upset?” I asked.
“That’s the thing- his name is Boromir.” She said. My jaw dropped open. Boromir… as in the guy next door, as in the sleeping person almost twenty feet away from us. The one I didn’t like. The one who was taken by ring, who would soon be consumed completely in it.
I saw suddenly why she was upset. Before now he was tucked away safely in the Tower of Gondor with his Dad, now he had to fight in the open, where no one knew what was going to happen. She started to tear up again.
“But I-I’m also really worried about y-you.” She said, bursting into tears again. I pulled her into a hug and we sat there together. Supporting each other just by being together.
“Please protect him.”

When she finally left I opened my closet doors and crouched down. Seeing her with her necklace made me want to wear my mother’s. I reached inside for the tiny chest I had in there and opened it.
Inside were my family’s possessions. A tear rolled down my face, for the first time in almost fifty years. I gingerly picked up my mum’s white handkerchief, with her initials still in the corner of the fabric; it still faintly smelled like her. She had always smelled like roses, for she was always tending the light pick roses outside our castle. I put it back.
I picked up my mother’s necklace. I had two of her necklaces. The first one was a very thin chain of silver with a little locket. I opened the locket inside were two picture. My mum and dad in the first frame and my brother was in the second one. I missed them a lot. The second one had a dainty silver chain, and on it an even daintier charm. The charm looked like a little angel. It seemed to glow all the time, when I was younger I thought it was magic. I opened the clasp and hung it around my neck where it sat just above my heart, it reminded me more of my mother because she always wore it.
I looked in the box again. My father’s pen, watch and his crown were there. He was the Lord of Mithlond. I was both close to my father and mother, but my father was away a lot more though so unintentionally I grew closer to her. They had loved me very much and I had loved them with all my heart.
There were only two items left in the box, and they both belonged to my brother. I picked the first one up. It was a small sword only the size of my elbow to my wrist. The blade was sharp. The second object was weapon belt.
I put everything back except the necklace. When I found the things I vowed that the tragedy that tore my family apart would never happen to my children.
