Jealousy and Dinosaurs
16:08, 19 June 2023As the group returns to the main lobby of the visitors center, Hammond tells them that the group is gonna have some company out in the park. Which also happened to be the target audience he was looking for. Suddenly, two children arrive in the building, a blonde girl around the age of 11 or 12 and a brunette boy around 8 or 9. "Grandpa!" the shout with delight, running toward the old man and tackling him to the ground for a hug. Malcolm and Laureen showed signs of concern for the children while Grant showed signs of fear at the very sight of them. Ellie on the other hand was smiling at both the children and the male paleontologist. The photographer glanced at Grant and giggled silently, "Not a fan?" she whispered"What?" asked Grant"Of kids"The male paleontologist chuckled softly and shook his head, "No, not really"The photographer giggled softly at Grant's response and smiled, "well, kids aren't for everyone" she said, following the others down the steps while Grant and Malcolm followed behind. The mathematician couldn't help but feel a bit jealous seeing his friend talk to someone like Dr. Grant. It was then, Malcolm decided to come up with a little plan to make Laureen jealous by flirting with Dr. Sattler. A smirk appeared on his face which Laureen didn't seem to notice. Of course, this wasn't the first time he tried this trick and each time he flirts with another woman, Laureen never seems to budge. This time however, he was determined to grab his friend's attention through the paleobotanist.
Outside the visitors center, two jeeps rolled up to the front of the building. What's unique about the vehicles was that no drivers were required. Gennaro hops into the first vehicle while Hammond guides Ellie to the second car. "I'm gonna ride with, uh, Dr. Sattler~" said Malcolm, smirking to himself as he felt the glares of Laureen Adams and Alan Grant, satisfied that his little scheme was working. The two head over to the second car when the little boy Tim stood before Alan Grant with a smile on his face. A smile that showed admiration, even through his innocent eyes. "I read your book" he said"Well, that's... That's great" said Grant, doing his best to avoid the kid as Tim goes on about how dinosaurs turn into birds. The male paleontologist manages to get the little boy in the first car before closing the door to his face mid sentence. Just when he thought it was over, Tim's older sister Lex stood with a smile on her face saying that she should ride with Alan cause it'll be good for him. Alan immediately knew it was Ellie's idea, looking over the girl's shoulder to see the paleobotanist and the photographer smiling and holding their laughter.
Laureen checks her camera and notices it was time to change the film, pulling out new film to replace the old one. Ellie couldn't help but feel a bit intrigued at how prepared the photographer was. "So how long have you been a photographer?" asked EllieLaureen glanced over at the blonde and smiled, "Since I first picked up a camera when I was 5" she said. The photographer tells the paleobotanist that she came from a line of photographers when her great grandfather was a photographer in the war, the same for her grandfather and her own father. Of course, she preferred taking pictures of animals and plants, sometimes people whenever she traveled from one country to another. Laureen even kept a mini album of some of her favorite photographs, which she happily gave to Ellie to look at. Ian couldn't help but look over the blonde's shoulder to see the photos his friend took during her travels. Most of them were of animals, villages/people, until Ellie was about to turn the page to one photo Laureen kept for a long time. A photo of her and Ian when they met in University. Thankfully, Alan joined the car just in time for Ellie to get distracted and Laureen to snatch the mini album away. Malcolm was a bit surprised by the photographer's actions, yet somewhat curious as to what she was hiding in the album. But he'll look into that later, for now he had to focus on the plan to make his friend jealous.
The vehicle up front had Donald Gennaro with the kids Tim and Lex, while the second vehicle had the two paleontologists, the mathematician and the photographer. The group noticed a rather large gate with the name 'Jurassic Park' pastured on the top to make it more dramatic. "What have they got in there, King Kong?" Malcolm jokes, seeing how the entrance was a bit over the top. Their first stop was the enclosure for the Dilophosaurus, grabbing everyone's attention but sadly it didn't show up much to their disappointment. Then the vehicles moved over to the next enclosure which contained the one and only tyrannosaurus rex. But just like the last one, the dinosaur didn't show up.Malcolm breaks the ice and says, "God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man, Man destroys God, Man creates dinosaurs.""Dinosaurs... eat man. Women inherit the Earth" said Ellie, earning a look from the men and a satisfied smirk from the female followed by a small handshake. The technicians decided to pull out a goat in order in hopes of luring the t-rex. Sadly it didn't work."The T-rex doesn't want to be fed. It wants to hunt" said AlanLaureen turns her attention to the paleontologist and lowers her camera, "what do you mean?" she asked"You can't just suppress 65 million years of gut instinct"Malcolm sighed in disappointment before turning his attention to the camera in the center of the hood, "Uh, uh, now-now, eventually you do plan to have dinosaurs on your, on your dinosaur tour, right?" he asks, tapping the glass and messing around with it until he gets bored.
As the vehicle moves forward, Malcolm sits back down and jokes about dinosaurs not obeying set patterns or park schedules. "Still not clear on chaos" said Ellie, earning a smirk from the mathematician. Before Malcolm could respond, he stole a glance at Laureen and thought, 'showtime' before answering the blonde. "Oh, it simply deals with, uh, unpredictability in complex systems" he said, "the short hand is the, uh, butterfly effect"Ellie smiled in awe and giggled as Ian gently played with the side of her hair while stealing glances at the photographer to see if she was paying attention, which she definitely was despite looking out the window with her camera in hand. Next step, the water experiment. Usually the ground should be still, but since the car was moving up and down, Malcolm lets it slide. He positioned Ellie's hand to make sure it was flat like a hieroglyphic and placed a small drop on her hand. He does it again in the same spot, seeing the droplet fall the other direction. Ian smiled and gently took her hand to explain the experiment."It changed," he said, telling Ellie that tiny variations, the orientation of the hairs on one's hands, the amount of blood distending one's vessels, imperfections in the skin while rubbing his fingers on top of her hand. Laureen's blood boiled at the scene happening behind her, remembering Malcolm doing the same thing to her when they first met at university. Alan seemed to notice before placing a comforting hand on her shoulder and distracts her by showing what's going on in the fields.
From the distance, it looked as though there was a rescue team dealing with a sick dinosaur. It was hard to tell what it was through the camera lens so the two decided to leave the vehicle to get a closer look. This action surprised Malcolm and Ellie, which proved the mathematician's theory on unpredictability. "See? I'm right again" he said, "No one can predict that Dr. Grant or Laureen Adams would suddenly, suddenly jump out of a moving vehicle"Ellie decided to follow the two, leaving Malcolm talking to himself. Eventually, he decided to follow the others, leaving his leather jacket behind in the process. Laureen was too preoccupied by working her camera, she didn't notice the rocks and nearly trips if Alan didn't catch her on top."You alright?" he asked, helping the photographer up"I'm fine, really. Thanks" said Laureen, earning a smile from the paleontologist and a glare from the mathematician a few feet away.
Once the group was close enough, Alan asked them to stay put while he went up ahead to check if it's safe. Of course, Tim wasn't a patient kid and decided to go after the paleontologist with Ellie and Laureen following behind. There a sick triceratops was tranquilized but supervised by members of the Jurassic Park team. Ellie and Grant were fascinated by the sight of a triceratops before their very eyes, which happened to be the male paleontologist's favorite dinosaur as a kid saying it's the most beautiful creature he's ever seen. Laureen takes pictures of the creature before Grant walks up to her and tells the photographer a few facts about the triceratops while Ellie talks to the vet about the dinosaur's health. Malcolm watches from a good distance as Alan gently guides Laureen's hand to the stomach of the triceratops, feeling its breathing patterns against her palm."You feel that?" he asked with a smile"I do," said Laureen, taking a moment to admire the creature."She's dilated," said Ellie, showing the triceratops' eyes to the vet, saying it was probably something they ate that made her very sick. The paleobotanist stood up and glanced over at the photographer, "Laureen?" she asked, "I need your help with something, might be up your alley"The photographer excused herself and followed Ellie into the field to find what they were looking for.
Eventually, Laureen noticed something and knelt down to get a better look, "are these West Indian Lilacs?" she asked"Yes" said the veterinarian, "We know they're toxic, but the animals don't eat 'em"Ellie knelt down to check the plant herself before suggesting to look into the droppings from the triceratops. Malcolm blinked in confusion, thinking she was joking until he noticed the look in her eyes. Laureen stood up and adjusted her camera before walking over to the mathematician, "having fun with Ellie, Dr. Malcolm?" she asked, her tone showing a hint of annoyance.Malcolm smirked as he looked down at his friend, "Oh ho ho~ Have I finally made the one and only Laureen Adams jealous?~" he purred, "To be honest, you're uh, you're awfully cute when you're angry or jealous""Oh save it, Ian. We're not college kids anymore""Pretty sure I won that um, that bet""What bet?""Oh you don't remember? The one that if I made you fall for me, you uh, become the future Mrs. Malcolm?""Till graduation? Oh yeah, I actually won that one, remember?"Before Malcolm could come up with a comment, his eyes glanced over the massive pile of dinosaur droppings that could be mistaken for a small volcano or even a mountain, "That is one big pile of shit" he comments, "gonna take a picture?""Nope" said Laureen
Thankfully, there were no traces of lilac berries in the dino's system and decided to look into it. Malcolm glanced over at Grant to whisper, "She's um uh.. Tenacious""You have no idea" said Grant, following the blonde to accompany her.The sound of thunder roared from the distance, meaning that a storm was coming and they should evacuate immediately. "Better get out of here" said Malcolm, guiding his photographer friend back to the cars and joining the others while Ellie stays with the vet to take care of the triceratops.
