00:39, 10 November 2024The storm had finally broken by the time Negan and Ariana pulled back up to the gates of the Sanctuary. The sky was still heavy with dark clouds, but the rain had reduced to a soft drizzle, the wind nothing more than a whisper. The atmosphere felt strangely calm, a stark contrast to the tension that had filled the last twenty-four hours.
As they drove through the gates, the familiar sight of the Sanctuary's towering walls and the gathering of Saviours going about their tasks brought a sense of normalcy, a reminder that they were back in the world they knew, the world that demanded they keep their guard up, no matter what.
Negan killed the engine and turned to Ariana, a smirk playing on his lips. "Well, darlin', looks like we made it back in one piece. Gotta admit, you handled that storm like a champ."
Ariana grinned, feeling the familiar tug of their banter. "I think it was your expert driving that saved us. Or maybe it was just pure luck."
Negan chuckled, leaning back in his seat as he watched her. "Might've been a little bit of both. But I'll take the compliment."
Ariana rolled her eyes playfully. "I'm sure you will."
They sat there for a moment, neither one in a hurry to get out of the car. The weight of their earlier conversation still lingered, but it had settled into something more manageable, something they both seemed willing to let lie for now. Instead, they slipped back into the familiar rhythm of teasing and flirtation, a safe space where they could be themselves without the heavy implications of what lay beneath.
Negan tapped his fingers on the steering wheel, a thoughtful look crossing his face before he turned to her again, his tone shifting to something more suggestive.
"You know, after the day we've had, I'd say we've earned ourselves a little break. How about this: you come up to my room tonight, and I'll cook us something special. Just the two of us. What do you say?"
Ariana raised an eyebrow, unable to hide the amusement that crept into her expression. "You're going to cook? That's something I have to see."
Negan grinned, clearly enjoying her reaction. "Don't sound so surprised, darlin'. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve. Could be worth your while."
Ariana tilted her head, considering his offer with mock seriousness. "Hmm, let me think. Dinner with the infamous Negan, in his private quarters... Sounds like it could be dangerous."
Negan's grin widened, his voice dropping to a low, teasing drawl. "Oh, it could be. But I think you're the kind of woman who likes a little danger."
Ariana felt her cheeks warm, but she refused to let him see her flustered. Instead, she leaned in slightly, matching his playful tone.
"Maybe I do. But I also know how to keep you on your toes, Negan. So, if I agree to this dinner, you'd better bring your A-game."
Negan's eyes sparkled with amusement, and he leaned closer, his voice a conspiratorial whisper. "Darlin', when it comes to you, I'm always bringing my A-game."
Ariana laughed softly, shaking her head. "Alright, you've convinced me. Dinner it is. But if your cooking skills aren't as impressive as you're making them out to be, I'm holding you accountable."
Negan straightened up, a mock look of offense on his face. "Oh, ye of little faith. Trust me, by the end of the night, you'll be begging me to cook for you every fuckin' day."
Ariana couldn't help but laugh again. "We'll see about that."
With that, she reached for the door handle, pushing it open and stepping out into the cool air. Negan followed suit, his eyes never leaving her as they made their way towards the entrance of the Sanctuary. The people around them offered respectful nods and greetings, but Ariana barely noticed, her mind focused on the upcoming evening and what it might hold.
As they reached the entrance, Negan paused, turning to her with a grin.
"You've got a few hours to get ready, darlin'. Don't keep me waiting too long."
Ariana flashed him a teasing smile, her confidence returning full force. "Wouldn't dream of it. I'll see you tonight."
"Can't fuckin' wait."
Negan watched her walk away, a satisfied look on his face as he headed inside, already thinking about what the evening might bring. There was a part of him that was still cautious, still aware of the line they were walking. But for now, he was content to let things play out, to see where this connection with Ariana would lead.
As Ariana made her way to her quarters, the thrill of her exchange with Negan still tingling in her veins, she didn't notice the figure leaning casually against the wall in the shadowy hallway until she was almost past him. Startled, she paused, her hand instinctively hovering near the knife strapped to her thigh. But when the figure stepped into the light, she relaxed slightly.
"Atlas." She said, her voice a mix of surprise and relief. "You scared me."
Atlas pushed off the wall with a small, crooked smile. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with a perpetual five o'clock shadow and a disarmingly calm demeanor that masked a sharp intellect.
"Didn't mean to." Atlas said, his tone easy but with an edge of concern. "But then again, I wasn't expecting to hear what I just did."
Ariana narrowed her eyes slightly, her defenses rising. "And what exactly did you hear?"
Atlas crossed his arms, his expression shifting from casual to serious. "That you've got plans to have dinner with Negan tonight. In his room. Alone."
"So what if I do? It's just dinner, Atlas. I've spent the whole day with him today."
Atlas sighed, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "Ariana, come on. You know it's not just dinner. Negan doesn't do anything without a reason, and you're smart enough to see that. I've watched him manipulate and control people for as long as I've been here. He's good at it, damn good. And you... you're important to him for some reason. I don't want to see you get hurt."
Ariana felt a flicker of irritation but also a pang of guilt. She knew Atlas cared about her, but the way he talked about Negan rubbed her the wrong way.
"I appreciate you looking out for me, Atlas. Really, I do. But I'm not some naive girl who doesn't know what she's getting into. I understand how things work here."
Atlas studied her face, his brow furrowing with. "I'm not saying you're naive. I know you're tough, Ariana. But Negan... he's different. He's dangerous. And I'm not just talking about the obvious stuff, his temper, his power. He's got a way of getting inside people's heads, making them think they're special to him, that they mean something. But the truth is, he only cares about what benefits him in the end."
Ariana crossed her arms defensively, her expression hardening. "You don't know him like I do, Atlas. He's not just some power-hungry tyrant. There's more to him than that."
Atlas shook his head, his voice low and intense. "Maybe there is but come on Ariana, you've only spent one day with him. That doesn't change what he's capable of. I'm just asking you to be careful. Don't let him pull you in too deep. Because if it comes down to it, Negan will always choose himself over anyone else."
Ariana looked away, her mind swirling with conflicting emotions. She knew Atlas was coming from a place of concern, but his words stung more than she wanted to admit.
"I can handle myself, Atlas. I've been doing it long before I came here."
Atlas softened slightly, sensing her resistance. He stepped closer, lowering his voice.
"I'm not trying to undermine you, or make you feel like you can't take care of yourself. I just... I don't want to see you get hurt, Ariana. Not by him, not by anyone. You've spent one day with him. Don't let one good day deceive you."
Ariana met his gaze, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. Atlas had been a steady presence in her life at the Sanctuary, a friend she could rely on when everything else seemed uncertain. She knew he was worried, and part of her appreciated that more than she wanted to let on.
But she couldn't shake the feeling that this was something she had to explore for herself, no matter the risks. She needed to understand what was happening between her and Negan, and where it might lead, even if it meant navigating dangerous waters.
"Atlas." She said softly, placing a hand on his arm. "I know you care about me, and I'm grateful for that. But this is something I have to figure out on my own. I promise I'll be careful, but I need to see where this goes."
Atlas searched her face, as if looking for any sign that she might reconsider. When he found none, he sighed and nodded reluctantly. "Alright. Just... don't let your guard down, okay? And if you ever need to talk, you know where to find me."
Ariana gave him a small, reassuring smile.
"I know. Thanks, Atlas."
He returned her smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Take care, Ariana. I'll be around if you need me."
Atlas gave Ariana one last, lingering look before he turned to leave.
"Oh, before I forget." He said, pausing in the hallway. "I'm heading out to the satellite outpost for a few days. Got a rotation coming up. Figured you'd want to know."
"The satellite outpost?"
"Yeah, Negan needs a few extra people on guard. Gotta make sure everything's running smooth."
Ariana felt a pang of worry. The satellite outpost was known for being a hotspot for trouble, and the thought of Atlas being stationed there made her uneasy. "Atlas, be careful out there."
Atlas smiled. "I will. But you know me, I can handle it. Just keep an eye out for yourself, alright?"
Without thinking, Ariana pulled him into a tight hug, holding him for a moment longer than usual. The gesture was spontaneous, fueled by her worry for him and the genuine affection she had for her friend.
"Good luck, Atlas. Please stay safe."
Atlas returned the hug, his arms wrapping around her in a comforting embrace. For a brief moment, the weight of their respective worries seemed to lift, replaced by the warmth of their friendship.
"Thanks, Ariana. I'll do my best. And you do the same, alright?"
Ariana pulled back, looking up at him with a small, reassuring smile.
"I will. Just come back in one piece."
Atlas nodded, his own smile growing a bit more genuine. "Promise. I'll be back before you know it."
