The weather on Saturday morning dawned warm and sunny and the blue sky with wisps of white cloud were visible by 8:00 AM when the four friends piled into Mark's 2019 Toyota RAV4 after tossing their overnight bags in the backseat. Sana wore:
Sana input the location of the hotel into the GPS and settled next to Jun in the backseat. After thirty minutes of blasting music and singing in the car, they stopped at a restaurant for Jun to work off some energy and for them to get breakfast.
They arrived at the hotel in another hour and a half (they stopped twice to let Jun out because he was getting aggravatingly hyper) and checked in. The three girls would be sharing a room and Mark and Jun had a room to themselves. After they dumped their stuff and admired the ocean view from their windows, Sana rounded up everyone and switched to her 'tour guide' mode.
Their first activity was biking. "We're going to bike 15km to our next location. It should be about an hour or maybe more," Sana explained as they got their helmets and rental bikes.
Sana slung her travel camera across her shoulder and hopped on her bike. She'd already memorized the route since it was pretty straight forward. The group of five set off, pedaling along the bike path that had a view of white sands, palm trees and the turquoise ocean on their right. Bright beach houses in summer colours of pink, white, gold and orange lined the other side of the street to their left. There were hardly any cars, but lots of people out on skateboards and rollerblades enjoying the sun.
Sana attempted to bike one-handed and slip on her shades but it wasn't happening. Jun appeared on her right. "Need some help?" he asked politely, matching her pace. After a nod, he reached over with his left to steady the handlebars of Sana's bike so she could use her free right hand to put on the dark sunglasses.
With a smile, Jun said, "Race you back to them!" Their friends were farther ahead, and Sana accepted the challenge.
"We sprint at the next speed limit sign." Jun said. Sana clenched her jaw with a nod and her fingers gripped the handlebars of her white bike tightly. The road had flattened out. They passed the speed limit sign.
Jun and Sana stood on their bikes at the same time, but Jun was quicker to pedal. With surprising speed, he wound the pedals of his bike as he stood out of his seat. With a groan, Sana pedaled as hard as she could to catch up, but Jun really was unbeatable.
In over an hour and fifteen minutes, they reached their next location. The path they took had taken them away from the beach, and this new area looked lush and green with lots of trees.
"Abseiling." Sana stated, her voice laced with excitement as they parked their bikes at the rental bike stop and took their gear off.
Mark goggled at her. "You know I'm not a fan of heights, Sana." Mark whined. Irene nodded. "Me too!" she added. Sana rolled her eyes.
"Well then I guess it's time to face your fears!" Sana retorted, dragging her friends to the reception.
Black, rocky cliffs, most of it mossy with small water plants growing out of crevices rose behind the building they had signed in at. The rush of water could be heard – a river was nearby.
They were going to abseil down 38m to a stretch of dry land below. The river was over 50m to the left of the site, and rapids tumbled down the rocks, before it got calmer further down. From the stretch of land, they would kayak along the river and the right bend in the river would take them back towards the reception building area, but they would have to hike for about twenty minutes to get back.
Mark was not at all looking forward to abseiling down a mossy cliff. Jun offered to go first. Sana had to admit he looked really cool as he abseiled down, following the instructor's voice. He was a good climber, so this was rather easy for him, though he was going the opposite way than he was used to. His muscles bulged and increased blood flow made his arms veiny. Sana busied herself with adjusting her harness.
They all got down safely (Mark did take the longest, but he made it) and were paired up to go in the two-person kayaks to go down the river. Mark would go with the instructor; Seulgi was with Irene; and of course, Sana was with Jun – again.
Sana sat in the first seat, since the heavier person was usually supposed to sit at the rear. "We'd better not capsize, because I'm not the best swimmer; don't expect me to come save you!" Jun announced from behind her.
No one capsized anyway.
