Just Breathe Honey
▬ Third Person- No one’s P.O.V ▬
“You’re not Atlanta PD,” Morales stated coming up beside Rick, who was using the ledge to support his weight. “I know Electra trusts you but I have to ask….where are you from?” Morales interrogated.
“Up the road of ways,”
“Well,” Morales laughed. “Officer Friendly, friend of Electra’s from up the road of ways,” he said summing up all he knew about Rick. “Welcome to the big city,” Morales said bitterly before looking over the edge at the walkers roaming the streets.
“My God,” Andrea exclaimed as she looked over the ledge from where she was standing. “It’s like town square down there,” she commented.
“Oh happy days,” Electra mumbled under her breath bitterly. “Hey T-Dog, how’s that signal?” she asked turning towards T-Dog who was sat down on the floor.
“Like Dixon's brain…..” T-Dog trailed off fiddling with the walkie before looking at Merle. “Weak,” he stated causing Merle to give him the finger.
“Keep trying,”
“Why?” Andrea questioned. “There’s nothing they can do,” she quipped pessimistically. “Not a damn thing,” she commented. Rick sent Electra a confused look.
“Got some people outside the city as well,” Electra explained to him. “There is no refugee centre….that’s a pipe dream,” she frowned.
“Seems to me, we’re on our own,” Rick assumed causing Electra to nod. “Therefore it’s up to us to find a way out,” Rick stated.
“Good luck with that,” Merle said from his place on the floor causing Electra to look at him. “The streets aint safe in this part of town from what I hear,” he said. “Aint that right Sugar tits?” he looked Electra up and down causing her to just turn around not wanting to waste her breath and Andrea stuffed some stuff back into a backpack.
“Hey, honey bun,” Merle attempted to get Andrea’s attention. “I didn’t mean what I said before…Let’s say you me out of these cuffs and we go off somewhere and bump some uglies,” he suggested. “Gonna die anyway,” Merle shrugged as a point.
“I’d rather,”
“Rug muchers,” Merle scoffed. “The pair of you,” he looked between Electra and Andrea. “Figured as much,” he commented causing Electra and Andrea to smirk at each other.
“Thanks honey,” Electra smirked flirtatiously, throwing a wink towards Andrea as she took her backpack back and swung it over one shoulder.
“Any time, sweet heart,” Andrea stepped towards Electra and whispered it in her ear playing along. Electra let out a giggle and pecked her on the cheek as Merle watched in shock.
“The streets aren’t safe,” Rick assessed, saying these words to Morales and Jacqui as Andrea and Electra walked towards him.
“Now, there’s an understatement,” Morales shot back as T-Dog continued to fiddle with the radio in hope of finding and getting a signal.
“What about under the streets? The sewers,”
“Oh man,” Morales said in response of Rick’s idea. “Hey Glenn,” he hollered causing Glenn to look at him. “Check the alley, you see any manhole covers?” Morales asked causing Glenn to run over to the other edge and peak over it.
“No,” Glenn sighed pacing back towards the group. “Must be in the streets where the geeks-” Glenn started before looking at Electra. “I mean, where the walkers are,” he corrected himself causing Electra to smile at him.
“Maybe not,” Jacqui denied causing everyone to turn to her. “Old building like this built in the twenties,” she assessed. “Big structures often had drainage tunnels into the sewers in case of flooding, down under the sub basements,” Jacqui explained.
“How do you know that?” Rick questioned her, confused of how anyone would have gained and contained the knowledge.
“It’s her job,” Glenn said for her looking directly at Electra in shock. “Was….” He corrected himself again. “She worked in the city zoning office,” Glenn repeated Electra’s earlier words as he was still staring at her.
“You’re welcome,”
“Come on follow me,” Glenn stated as Electra winked at him before heading down the stairs leading off of the roof and travelled down them for as long as she could. Jacqui, Morales, Rick, Electra, Glenn and Andrea ran towards a big ditch shaft sort of thing which was in the ground surrounded by metal pipes.
“This…..is it?” Morales said unimpressed as he looked down the hole along with the others. “You sure?” he turned to Glenn who was on the far right.
“I really scoped this place out when we got here, ensured it was safe and all. It’s the only thing in the building that goes down…but I didn’t go down it,” he explained. “Who’d want to right?” he smiled continuing to look down at it as everyone simultaneously turned their heads to look at him. Looking to his left his smile soon turned upside down in to a frown. “Oh,” he nodded. “Great,” he sighed.
“We’ll be right behind you-” Andrea assured him.
“No you won’t,” Glenn both cut her off and cut her down at the same time before Rick went to open his mouth. “Nor you,”
“Why not me?” Andrea questioned curiously. “You think I can’t?” she demanded getting slightly annoyed and defensive at his words.
“I wasn-”
“Speak your mind,” Rick told him calmly.
“Look, until now I always came here by myself, in and out grab a few things- no problem. First time I bring a group everything goes to hell,” he explained before looking at Electra and Rick. “No offence,” he said neutrally. “If you want me to go down this manhole? Fine. But only if we do it my way,” Glenn stated causing everyone to stay silent apart from Andrea.
“And what is your way?”
“It’s tight down there. If I run into something I need to get out quick, I don’t want you to be clogged up behind me getting me killed. I’ll take one person,” Glenn stated causing Electra to automatically straighten up. “Not you either, you’ve got a gun and I’ve seen you shoot it,” he stated. “Your reflexes are impeccable- I’ve experienced that first hand,” he said. “And no I am not just saying this because I’m afraid that you will straddle me again,”
“Straddle?” Rick raised an eyebrow at her.
“It’s a long story,” Electra said bluntly.
“I’d feel better if you were out in that store watching those doors Electra, covering my ass,” Glenn commented. “….as usual,” he added on. “You two have the other guns so you should go with her,” Glenn said to Rick and Andrea. “You be my wingman,” Glenn pointed at Morales. “Jacqui stays here, if something happens yell down to us, get us up here and hurry, alright?” Glenn asked.
“Alright,”
Electra was still impressed with how Glenn had handled everything, practically commanding the room without a flaw. Glenn sighed as he began to climb down the little metal ladder, shortly followed by Morales. Electra sent them both a weak smile before turning back and following Andrea and Rick to the ground floor where the walkers were gathered.
“Sorry…..for the gun in your face,” Andrea apologized to Rick sheepishly as Electra walked along beside him awkwardly digging her hands into her pockets.
“People do things when they are afraid,” Rick said dismissively, showing her that he understood what Andrea did to assure her.
“Not that it was entirely unjustified….” She added looking at Rick. “You did get us all into this,” she shrugged casually walking over to examine the jewellery section.
“If I get us out of this…” Rick started. “Would that make up for it?” Rick enquired with the hope of earning the group as a whole’s trust.
“No,” Andrea shot him down. “But it would be a start,” she looked up at Rick as Electra moved away from them not wishing to disturb their conversation as she browsed through a clothing rack nearby.
“Next time though….” Rick stated after a thirty second silence. “Take the safety off,” he advised her. “It won’t shoot otherwise,” Andrea sighed looking down. “Is that your gun?” Rick asked her.
“It was a gift, why?” Andrea replied, to be honest she had no clue how to use one as she had revealed by her earlier actions.
“Little red dot means that its ready to fire,” Rick told her after approaching her, taking her gun and pushing the safety off. “We may have occasion to use it,” he stated.
“Good to know,”
“What about you?” Rick turned in Electra’s direction causing her to look up from the clothing rack. “Where did you get your gun?” Rick asked her.
“Stole it from a Sheriff’s Department somewhere in Georgia,” Electra explained casually. “Going to arrest me, Sherriff Grimes?”
“Wouldn’t dream of it,”
“Good thing,” she nodded before looking back down to the clothes for a brief moment before looking up again. “Wouldn’t want to have to shoot you now, would I?” Electra asked, teasing him in playful manner before looking back down again.
Rick made his way to stand beside her, examining her as she looked through the clothes. Electra looked up slowly to meet his gaze.
“Erm….have I got walker blood on my face or something?” Electra said subconsciously rubbing her face as if she were trying to get something off.
“No,” Rick laughed shaking his head. “You’ve changed so such but are still the same,” he commented causing Electra to raise an eyebrow at him. “And that didn’t make a word of sense to you did it?” he asked.
“Kind of,” Electra shrugged. “Like you’ve all grown up and are this bigger, better and improved version of yourself but can have certain aspects which are the same as before,” Electra spoke.
“And still share the same thoughts with the person like before,” Rick said in reaction to Electra speaking his own thoughts out loud.
“Do you have a family?”
“Yeah,” Rick nodded. “Yeah, I got married to a beautiful woman a few years after you left and we had a kid, twelve now, named after you of course,” Rick said causing Electra to smile slightly at the thought that there was a little twelve year old Electra Grimes running around. “I have to find them, that’s why I came to the city. I thought the refugee camp was my only shot,” Rick stated. “Did you ever get married? Have kids?”
“Naw,” Electra shook her head dismissively. “Made a pretty good career for myself though, got myself a nice little house in London,” she said. “I became more of a workaholic, I wanted to live my life and do what I loved before finding someone to love and giving life,” she explained.
“Good on you,” Rick nodded before chuckling.
“What?”
“Naw, it’s just-” Rick started before trailing off, a pointed look from Electra caused him to continue on. “When we were kids, we always used to play families together, we even planned our wedding,” Rick laughed causing Electra to smile and look down.
“Funny how things turn out,” Electra looked down, pretending to have become fascinated by a pink jumper which was on the clothes rack.
Rick from her face and downwards until he spotted the little friendship ring which was hanging from a silver chain which was clasped around her neck and hung down to her chest. A smile crept to Rick’s lips as he remembered his own friendship ring hanging around his neck attached to a leather strap.
“You still have it,” Rick said as he took the ring in between his two fingers examining it as the smile failed to falter from his face.
“So…?”
Rick undid the first button of his sheriffs uniform and pulled out the leather strap showing her his friendship ring causing her to look at it in disbelief.
“You kept it too,”
“Of course I did,”
The words caused Electra to involuntarily look up and turn to face him, her eyes connecting with his. They were truly beautiful or at least they were to her….they would be stunning on any person but his dark hair emphasized and complemented them perfectly. They were that rare piercing icy electric blue which had been her favourite colour when she was a child.
She couldn’t help it. All the feelings that she had once felt were flooding back, a warm and tingling feeling going down her chest. She couldn’t do it. Not again. She refused. She instantly tore her eyes away from his and looked down to her shoes.
“Mmmm,” Andrea hummed to herself examining something over by the jewellery section causing both Electra’s and Rick’s head to turn in her direction.
“See something you like?” Rick asked as Electra walked so that she was now stood to the right of Andrea as she began to examine necklace with the little mermaid pendant.
“Not me, but I know someone who would,”
“Amy,”
“My sister,” Andrea informed Rick who was now on her left. “She’s still such a kid in some ways. Unicorns, dragons- she’s into all that stuff, but mermaids? They rule,” she went on. “She loves mermaids,” a small smile played on Andrea’s lips.
“Why not take it?”
“There’s a cop staring at me,” Andrea looked up at Rick causing him to smile slightly. “Would it be considered looting?” she questioned.
“I don’t think those rules apply anymore, do you?” Rick retorted causing Andrea to smile again as she took the pendant off of the model and stuffed it into her jeans pocket.
Electra opened her mouth to speak when she heard a crash. With a quick turn of her head she saw that the noise of the crash was the breaking of the exterior glass doors and that the only thing which was separating them from the walkers was the interior set of automatic doors which they were pounding on. It was then that Morales, Glenn and Jacqui ran in stopping as they stared hopelessly and the walkers.
“What did you find down there?”
“Not a way out,”
“We need to find a way out,” Electra stated level-headedly before looking around at everyone. “Soon,” her gaze stopped at Morales.
“Come on, the roof!”
Everybody charged to the stairway which led up to the roof and to the edge to the roof peaking over it, seeing that all the walkers were now attacking the building. Electra rushed to her bag and retrieved a pair of binoculars and threw them to Rick who caught them and then pressed them to his eyes looking into the distance.
“That construction site,” Rick said causing everyone to set their sights on it. “Those trucks. They always keep keys on hand,” he mused before handing the binoculars to Morales.
“We’ll never make it past the walkers,” Morales assessed whilst looking through the binoculars before moving them away from his eyes.
“You got me out of that tank,” Rick said turning to Glenn who was standing beside Electra leaning on one of the many railings on the roof.
“Yeah but they were feeding,” Glenn stated. “They were distracted,”
“Can we distract them again?”
“He’s right,” Merle said from his spot on the floor still securely handcuffed to the pipes. “Listen to him, he’s onto sommin’,” Merle stated causing everyone to turn around and look at him. “A diversion….like an all guns blazing cop,” he drawled.
“Good God,” Jacqui commented rolling her eyes at his comment whilst crossing her arms. “Give it a rest already,” she ordered.
“They’re drawn by sound, yeah?” Rick questioned the group again ignoring and turning away from Merle back to the others.
“Right,” Electra replied. “Like dogs,” she made the comparison whilst giving Merle a glare before turning back to Rick. “They hear sound they come,” she stated.
“What else?”
“Apart from hear you?” Morales questioned. “They see you, smell you….and if they catch you they eat you,” Morales explained bluntly.
“They can tell us by smell?” Rick asked, latching onto the scent idea.
“Can’t you?”
“They smell dead, we don’t,” Andrea offered up coolly. “It’s pretty distinct,” she looked over at Rick as did Electra who could see the idea flickering in his eyes.
Now wearing a pair of rubber gloves and rain jackets, Rick and Morales drag a dead walker from the alley into the building. With a walking stick Rick had found he smashed the glass so that he could take the axe which lay in a glass case attached to the wall. Rick stares at the body a moment before going to chop into it but slides and withdraws not being able to do so before taking a step back, throwing the axe, his mask and gloves to the ground before searching the dead mans pockets to obtain his ID
“Wayne Dunlap- Georgia license. Born….. nineteen seventy nine,” Rick read out to the group before handing the license to Glenn as he looked in Wayne’s pockets. “He had twenty eight dollars in his pocket when he died and a picture of a pretty girl,” he told the group before flipping the photo around to find writing scribbled on the back. “With love from Rachel,” he read it out. “He used to be like us. Worrying about bills or the rent or the super bowl. If I ever find my family I’m gonna tell them about Wayne,” Rick said, putting the wallet aside before putting on his helmet and gloves.
“One more thing…” Glenn said as Rick grabbed the axe off of the floor causing the whole group to lay eyes on him. “He’s an organ donor,” he looked up at everyone before turning to Rick.
Rick brang down the axe on the body causing everyone to look away disgusted and gag whilst some of the walkers blood splashed upwards onto Rick’s helmet. Electra concentrated on counting the times she heard Rick bring the axe down on the walker. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. He stopped after six times getting overwhelmed by the smell taking off his helmet and covering his nose with his arm.
“Keep chopping,” Rick ordered passing the helmet to Morales and then the blood covered axe once Morales had reluctantly put the helmet on.
“I am so gonna hurl,”
“Later,” Rick said to Glenn who was moaning and bending over attempting to feel better. Morales began to hack away at the body.
The odour was strangling her, smoothing her in it’s rancid scent. It was burning and stinging her eyes and nose, she shut them tightly placing her arm over her nose hopping that the smell of her overalls would block out the stench. But it was no use. She was going to puke all over the place either that or faint.
One. Two. Three. Four. Five.
“Everybody got gloves?” Rick asked everybody as Morales placed down the axe causing Electra to open her eyes, when he got no response he continued. “Don’t get any on your skin or in your eyes,” he told everyone. Reluctantly everybody crouched down and dug their hands inside the dead rotting corpse and started smearing it onto Rick’s and Glenn’s overalls. Glenn continuing to groan out of disgust whilst doing so to himself.
“Oh God, oh God. Oh this is bad…..this is really bad,” Glenn moaned as Morales hung the intestines around his shoulder. Electra frowned at him, seeing that he was as white as a sheet.
“Think about something else,” Rick said standing up straight and stiff whilst T-Dog and Jacqui smeared guts on his overalls. “Puppies and kittens,” he suggested.
“Dead puppies and kittens,” T-Dog said staring out into space causing Glenn to turn away and puke all over the floor, Electra making circling motions on his back in attempt to soothe him.
“That is just evil,” Andrea looked away from Glenn and to Rick and T-dog. “What is wrong with you?” she asked T-Dog who looked at her briefly before looking down guiltily.
“Next time, why don’t you crack a babies ass?” Jacqui asked Rick sarcastically, staring at him in an accusing manner before smearing more guts on him.
“I’m sorry man,” T-Dog apologized.
“This sucks,” Glenn moaned.
“Just breathe honey,”
“Do we smell like them?” Rick asked causing everyone to stop ‘working’ and take a step back from the pair of them examining them.
“Oh yeah,” Electra wrinkled her nose in disgust causing Glenn to bend over again. “Glenn,” she said causing him to look at the gun she was offering to him. “Just in case,” she stated before stuffing it gingerly in the hem of his pants, trying to avoid the walker entrails.
“We make it back, be ready,” Rick told everyone as they began to remove their gloves and overalls and drop them to the ground with pleasure.
“What about Merle Dixon?” T-Dog questioned causing Glenn to dig his hands into his trouser pockets retrieving the hand cuff keys and throwing them to T-Dog.
“I’d hug you both but….” Electra said awkwardly looking them both up and down with a disgusted face before opening the door to the alley way.
“Yeah…we know,”
“Good luck,” Electra nodded at them both causing them both to head out to the alley way, Electra looked after them as they shuffled away passing two walkers successfully before shutting them door. T-Dog, Morales, Andrea, Jacqui and Electra raced to the roof in record time.
“Hey!” Merle shouted at them as they burst through the doors and sprinted right passed him to the edge. “What’s happening man?!”
“Hey T-Dog! Try that CB!” Morales ordered as Electra looked through her black binoculars to follow Rick and Glenn’s path through the street.
“Base camp!” T-Dog said into the radio/ walkie. “This is T-Dog. Anybody hear me? Can anybody out there hear me?” T-Dog questioned trying the radio again.
“There!” Electra pointed when she finally got a lock onto the two men causing Jacqui, Morales and Andrea to follow in her fingers direction.
Crackle.
“That assholes out on the street with the handcuff keys?” Merle scoffed as Electra looked upwards towards the grey sky. T-Dog dug his hand into his pocket and hung the handcuff keys from his fingers waggling it, causing Merle’s face to drop into a scowl.

“This hose isn’t good for this world is it?”
“No sir,”
“How the hell are we going to find a replacement?”
Back at base camp Dale was working on the RV's troublesome radiator hose with Jim, who was wearing a navy mechanic's jumpsuit whilst Thea was pacing back and forth near them, fretting mentally about the group. Lori was hanging up some washing, staring over at Sophia playing with Eliza and Louis. Shane was out in the woods hanging out with Carl and Stacie over at the lake.
“It’s late,” Thea stated continuing to pace forwards and backwards. “They should have been back by now, Glenn’s always back on the fourth morning,” she stated.
“Worrying won’t make it better,”
Crackle.
“Hello base camp? Can anybody out their hear me?” they heard a voice barely come through causing Dale to climb up on the R.V roof and grab the CB radio. “B--e ca-p, this -- ----g, anybody -ear me?”
“Hello? Hello?” Dale spoke into the radio gaining more static. “Receptions bad on this end,” he stated. “Repeat. Repeat.”
“Shane?! I- t--- you?!” the garbled transmission came through with a different voice, a woman’s one this time.
“Is that them?” Lori asked.
“Ay Shane, ---- stuck -- --- depart—nt st-re,”
“She say they’re trapped?”
“Th—e --- geeks all over --- -----. W---- surrou-ded,”
“T-Dog repeat the last, repeat,” Dale said desperately in to the receiver wishing to understand what they were saying but the line ended.
“He said the department store,” Lori spoke up.
“I heard it too,” Thea agreed with Lori. “I’ll go get Shane, we need to have a plan of action-” Thea stated about to walk off but was stopped by Lori.
“No way,” Lori shook her head. “Shane would never forgive himself if he knew that the missions gone wrong, it would kill him,” she said to Thea. “You know what he always says: we do not risk the rest of the group,” Lori said level-headedly. “We can’t go after them,” Lori denied.
“So we’re just going to leave them there?” Thea asked disgusted. “They volunteered to go. To help the rest of us,” she stated.
“I know. But they knew the risks, right? So they’re trapped they’re gone. So we just have to deal with that. There’s nothing we can do,” Lori said.
“Morales is a father and a husband to people in this group. Jacqui’s always been good to everyone. Andrea is Amy’s sister. T-Dog and Glenn saved my life, Electra too and she’s Shane’s sister. You bitch.” Thea spat before storming off angrily.
It was then that Shane emerged out of the forest holding Carl’s hand in his right and Stacie’s hand in his left. He had taken responsibility for Stacie in his sister’s absence.
“What’s up?” he asked everyone, wondering why they were gathered around the R.V.
“Nothing,” Lori assured him with a sweet smile.

Electra passed the binoculars to Morales to have a look through before everyone heard the spatter of rain drops, feeling it on their bodies.
“Oh man,” Morales looked through the binoculars as everyone looked around in worry. “It’s just a cloudburst. Give it a little time it will pass real quick,” Morales said to assure them before the sky began pouring down.
“Give it here,” Electra said causing Morales to pass it back to her, by the time she had wiped the glass clean and looked back through she could see Rick fighting off walkers. “Oh God,” she muttered in worry seeing them go. “Come on, come on, come on,” she urged following them, they stripped off their overalls before climbing over the fence and going out of her sight. Electra removed the binoculars and threw them on the floor.
Bang.
“That’s not thunder, that’s gun shots,” Jacqui commented. “1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12.” She counted each gunshot until they stopped.
“They’re leaving us,” Andrea said looking through the binoculars to see the box truck driving away from the town standing up on the edge.
“No. No. No.”
“What?!” Merle questioned out of disbelief. “What?!” Merle demanded furiously turning to look in her direction. “What do you mean?!”
“No come back!” Andrea shouted as if they could hear her before they drove out of her sight also. Frowning she jumped of the edge and sunk down beside the wall. “They’ve gone, they’ve left us behind,” she told everyone.
“No,” Electra denied shaking her head at her in disbelief. “They wouldn’t,” she insisted. “They wouldn’t just leave us. They wouldn’t,”
“They have,” Andrea said causing a lingering silence which lasted about ten or fifteen minutes but seemed like months in Electra’s eyes.
“Those roll up doors,” Glenn’s voice came through on the walkie that T-Dog was holding. “They’re at the end of the street,” Glenn stated. “Meet us there and be ready,” he instructed causing everyone to smile.
“Come on. Come on. Let’s go!”
Morales shout broke up their little celebration. The group grabbed their bags and rushed from the rooftop toward the loading dock, with no concern for unlocking Merle's handcuffs, but T-Dog reluctantly turned back as Merle begs. The group continued quickly down the stairwell as T-Dog moved to set Merle free, accidentally slipping on the rain-soaked roof and dropping the handcuff key down a drain. He also knocked over the tool box, as the hacksaw and other tools spill out.
“Where’s T-Dog?” Jacqui asked Morales as he re-joined the others at loading dock, Andrea and Electra where holding the chain which was attached to the door.
“Shhh,” Electra hissed as she was pushed up against the door, trying to hear what was happening outside but hearing a subdued siren.
“What is that?” Andrea questioned Electra also hearing the subdued siren sound in the far off distance, thinking that she was hearing things.
“Come on! Let’s go!” T-Dog shouted as he ran through the door, Electra turned to shush him. “There in here! The walkers are in here! Let’s go!” he shouted causing Electra to gasp before there was a knock on the door causing everyone to pull on the chain slowly raising the door and jump into the back of the cube van, catching their breath as they drive away from the city. Morales hopped into the passenger seat as everyone looked around at each other not knowing what to say or ask about Merle’s obvious absence.
“I dropped the damn key,” T-Dog admitted ridden with guilt as he looked straight forwards causing Electra to frown as she was clinging on to the side.
“Where’s Glenn?” Electra asked after a second, before Rick could answer her she heard the siren that she had heard back in the loading dock as a red car speeded out in front of them into their sight. She grinned hearing his screams of joy. “Might as well let him enjoy it,” she chuckled.
“Nobody’s gonna be sad that he didn’t come back,” Morales said in attempt to reassure Rick and T-Dog who were both partly responsible for Merle’s abandonment.
“Except, maybe Daryl,”
