Chapter 1

05:54, 23 August 2015

Here we go again. Another year stuck inside this hellhole that people call school.

Thankfully, this is my senior year at Miami High and then I'm off to the real world. People say that your senior year goes by extremely quick. I'm hoping that's the case here.

I seem to have everything going for me. I'm a very smart girl, I have great looks, or so everyone says, I'm co-captain of the cheerleading squad and I'm dating the most popular guy in school.

From the looks of it, I have everything I could ever want. If that's so, why do I feel so incomplete?

Me and my boyfriend Brad have been dating since the beginning of our summer break. We've only been together for 3 months but already we've become the power couple at Miami High.

I pull up to the large school in my brand new red Ferrari. All heads turn towards my direction as soon as I step out.

It's like one of those cliché movies where the hot and popular girl steps out of a car and everything is in slow motion; all eyes are on me and all jaws fell to the floor. I adore the attention that all these losers give me.

I smirk and walk towards the large brick building in search for my best friend.

As I'm walking a frail girl bumps into me and automatically my anger flares. "Watch where the hell you're going nerd!" I push the tan girl to the floor. I hear a thump but I don't bother to make sure she's okay. It's not like I care. I continue walking while everyone remains staring at me. It's no secret at all that I have anger issues which is why no one gets in my way.

"LoLo!" I hear the voice of my best friend and I turn around quickly. We run into each others arms and I embrace her tightly.

I don't care about very many people in the world but I would do anything for my best friend. She is genuinely one of the few people in this world I love, along with my younger siblings Chris and Taylor and my parents.

"ManiBear!" I call her by her nickname and let go of the older girl.

We interlock our arms as we walk into the school. "Okay spill the deets on your summer! Did you and Brad 'seal the deal'?" she asks super excited.

The mere thought of sleeping with Brad makes me feel a little nauseous. Don't get me wrong, he's a cute guy but I guess I'm not ready for the sexual part of the relationship with him.

"Gross no. He's tried multiple times but the farthest I've let him go was second base" I respond to the dark skinned girl who was listening intently.

"How about you? Did you meet any hot guys at cheerleading camp?" I kink my eyebrow suggestively at her and she playfully hits my shoulder.

"God no. All the guys there were either taken, unattractive or gay" she laughs and I chuckle along with her. "Plus, I'm trying to focus on cheerleading. Since we're co-captains you better be doing the same" she says sternly.

We have been co-captains for two years in a row. Honestly, cheerleading isn't a passion of mine like it is for my best friend. I only joined the team after being relentlessly begged for hours on end by my co-captain.

I won't deny that I actually have a great talent in that department though. I have the look, I'm a pretty good dancer and I'm full of sass. It's the perfect combination for a cheerleader.

"Don't worry you will have enough time for Brad considering we'll be cheering at all of his games" she smirks and I roll my eyes.

Honestly, I don't even know why I am with this guy. He is sweet but something is missing between us. Something I've never experienced before, that chemistry that people share. Maybe it's just in movies.

Everyone talks about how when you kiss someone you're supposed to feel sparks and butterflies but I never feel anything when I kiss him.

Truth be told, I've never felt that kissing anyone before. Maybe I'm just not meant for relationships.

I feel a pair of strong hands covering my eyes and rough lips kissing my neck rather sloppily.

"Guess who" the male voice calls out and I put on a fake smile and turn to face him. "Brad! I missed you" I lie and lean in for a quick peck on his lips.

"I missed you too baby." he grabs my bag and walks us to the table, Normani trailing behind.

I roll my eyes when he grabs my hand as well and pulls me to the table with his friends.

Normani sits down beside this guy that has been crushing on her for years now. She is the biggest flirt and loves the attention.

She playfully runs her fingers up and down his arm. "Hey Arin. Did you miss me this summer?" she winks at him and I can't help but laugh at this exchange.

Normani is the best person I know. She is always so caring of other people and she is extremely nice for a popular girl. However, when it comes to relationships and guys, she has a reputation for being a heartbreaker.

Guys fall so easily for her even though it's rare for her to ever return the feelings.

I look at Arin who's face is flustered as he nods to Normani's question. "How about you? Did you miss me?" he combats her answer and she flutters her long eyelashes at him. "Maybe" she smirks and turns to face me.

"Let me see your schedule" she demands and I hand it over to the older girl.

She sighs "We only have two classes together. We have gym with Mr. Rochester and then Chemistry with Mrs. Hernandez."

Brad eagerly grabs my schedule to check if we have any classes together. Luckily for me, we don't.

"Aww I'm sorry Brady" I ruffle his hair and kiss his cheek. Even though I'm not in love with him, I do like him. He's very kind and sweet to me. I'm just not sure if it's as just a friend or more. Until I can settle how I feel, I try to stay away as much as I can which is ironic considering he is my boyfriend.

I look up and see the girl that got in my way earlier. She's wearing tight black pants with a long hoodie. Some redhead guy is on the front of it. I can't read it from here but it looks like it says Sheehan or something.

I recognize who she is. She's that gay girl in the school. She came out last year when she was spotted kissing some girl who later moved because she couldn't handle the bullying.

The girl gets bullied a lot for her sexuality by everyone including me. It's not that most people care that she is gay but she is also a nerd which makes her an easy target.

She looks up and makes eye contact. Almost as soon as our eyes meet, she looks down and rushes off in the other direction causing me to chuckle.

I enjoy the feeling of superiority that I get around here.

The bell for first period rings and I give Normani a quick hug before walking off to class with Brad. He wants to start walking me to all of my classes. I guess it's just what boyfriends do.

I give him a long but dry kiss before walking into my class. I look around the class in search for someone who wasn't completely a loser.

Unfortunately, I wasn't so lucky. Most of the popular students weren't very smart so I was in this class with a bunch of peasants.

"You, get up this is my seat" I say to a pale boy. He looked up fearfully and pushed his glasses up on his face. "Quickly" I huff out impatiently.

He gets up and begins moving to a new seat. I stick my foot out and he falls hard on the ground. Everyone around laughs including me. He looks down embarrassed and sat at the seat furthest away from me.

Class was lame but at least I was able to focus because I wasn't surrounded by friends.

Once class was over I waited for Brad so he can walk me to my next class which was gym.

I spotted Normani and squealed. I ran over to her and we began gossiping on any and everything.

My next class of the day went by in a blur as well as my lunch period. I just spent it bickering with Mani and avoiding my boyfriend without actually avoiding him. Now it is time for the other class I have with my best friend which was Chemistry class. We were greeted by a short but happy Mrs. Hernandez. I roll my eyes as soon as I get in the class. People like her, who are always so happy, annoy me.

I take my seat next to Normani and smirk. She gives me a high five and we begin to talk about our classes so far.

I look up when I see these two girls entering the room.

Her again.

No matter where I go, she follows. I'm beginning to think she's stalking me.

Our eyes connect once again and this time she doesn't look away. Her brown eyes gaze into mine until her tall best friend pulls her into a seat.

"Lauren? Are you listening to me?" the older girl looks concerned. "Are you okay?" she asks and I just nod.

I turn my attention to the teacher who just got done writing her name across the board.

"Okay class. My name is Mrs. Hernandez-Ogletree but you can just call me Mrs. H. This is not going to be a typical Chemistry class. We aren't going to live with our heads in the text book or do some lame labs on boring topics that will put you to sleep. First thing first, we will play a small game. You will know a little about all of your classmates by the end of it. Whoever wins at the end of this game, I will buy you lunch tomorrow. Whatever you want" the teacher smiles and students begin to root.

She hands us out a paper with a bunch of random statements. 'This person hates pizza. This person has more than three siblings? This person is an only child? blah blah blah'

"What, are we in first grade?" I roll my eyes at the short lady and she just smiles.

"What is your name?" she asks me and I smirk. "Like you don't know already? You'll learn soon. Everyone knows who I am. My name is Lauren. Lauren Jauregui"

"Well Ms. Jauregui, you do not have to participate in this game. In fact, if you want to question me, you can leave the classroom." she smiles innocently.

I don't respond because for once I'm speechless. I do not get spoken to that way, not even by teachers.

"Okay class, here are the rules" she continues speaking once she knows I won't respond.

"Find students who relate to the statement. For example, if the statement is 'This person likes to interrupt teachers.' you write Lauren's name right beside it. You can not mention one student more than twice. There are 10 statements and 16 students so that should be easy. Also, you can not write your own name down. On the count of three I want everyone to disperse around the classroom and get the job done. One, two, three!"

Just like that everyone, including me begins to ask each other the questions that are on the paper.

I notice Mrs. H watching with a smile on her face. I race around the room asking questions until I bump into the frail girl again. Normally I would be angry but I only have one question left before I win.

"Are you an only child" I ask rather plainly but her facial expression changes. She looks somewhat saddened and her eyes look glassy.

"No need to be all emotional just answer the question" I begin losing my temper but she nods her head.

"Okay, what's your name" I ask the tan girl who looks disconnected now.

"Camila" she whispers and walks off.

I roll my eyes. "weirdo" I mumble before running to the front of the class.

"Done!" I call out with a proud smile across my face. I am extremely competitive so whenever I win at anything, small or big, I'm proud.

The teacher takes my paper and glances at it. "Looks like Mrs. Jauregui won. I thought you didn't want to play this game. It is elementary after all" she replies teasingly. I can't help but smile. For the first time ever, I might actually like a teacher.

Unlike most people, she isn't afraid of me and she demands respect.

"Okay what do you want to eat for lunch tomorrow?" she asks kindly and I have to think. I probably should've thought about this before hand.

I couldn't think of anything good so I just responded with pepperoni pizza.

"Now, the point of this exercise is that I'm a fun teacher" she jokes and the class chuckles.

"No honestly the point is that hopefully you met some people with things in common with you. In this class, no one is better than the other and no one is worse. This class will be a safe haven and it'll probably be the only class that doesn't put you to sleep. Hopefully you can all make some new friends as well and maybe you'll meet the love of your life. If you do, I want to be invited to the weddings" she jokes again and I smile.

I actually do like this teacher. She's about more than just teaching and it's obvious that she genuinely cares about her students.

After class I look at the Camila girl once more. She's talking to the tall girl who has a hand placed gently on her knee.

I focus on my best friend and we walk out of class. We make plans for the weekend and are already planning which party we want to attend.

After the awfully lame rest of the day, I get into my car and drive away from school and towards my home. Day 1 of school down and only.. 179 left. Great.
