BROKEN RULES, OPEN HEARTS
13:03, 15 April 2025The contract sat in Ling’s desk drawer like a loaded gun.
Every time she opened it — to sign a report, to check a file — it stared back at her. Page 4, Clause 7: No romantic involvement. Strictly legal partnership. Duration: 3 years.
It had been seven months.
And she was already breaking the rule that mattered most.
She wasn’t supposed to care.
But she did.
She cared about how Orm hummed when she painted. How she lit up when Wei called from the hospital to say he was strong enough to walk again. How she always saved the last dumpling for Ling — even if she wanted it herself.
Ling noticed everything now. The way Orm’s hand brushed hers a little longer at dinner. The quiet way she said goodnight at Ling’s door, always looking like she might say something more.
And worse — Ling wanted her to.
---
One evening, Ling stood in the middle of the rooftop garden, watching Orm paint under the hanging string lights.
She didn’t know how long she’d been there.
“Stop lurking,” Orm said softly, not even turning around. “You’ll scare the rosemary.”
Ling rolled forward until she could see the canvas.
It wasn’t a landscape. Not flowers or skies.
It was her.
Ling, sitting in the garden, reading, the light catching her hair like the edge of gold. She looked peaceful in the painting — almost soft.
“Why me?” Ling asked, voice quieter than usual.
Orm wiped her brush. “Because you don’t know how beautiful you are when no one’s watching.”
Ling didn’t speak.
So Orm added, “And maybe I’m tired of pretending this is just a contract.”
That cracked something wide open.
Ling looked away. “I can’t give you what you deserve.”
Orm stepped closer. “Why do you always assume what I deserve is more than you?”
Ling blinked. “Because I’m broken. I am disabled not perfect and also with stone heart and also with lurking danger it could be life threatening for you . I have no one so I don't fear but you have your family so I can't let you to be in danger ," ling say these with broken sons and teary eyes ....
Orm cupped her face gently. “No, Ling. You’re healing. That’s even better. And about family,.....you are also my family my wife and if you are in danger my family also in danger. Ling I want you and if danger comes with you I would fight with it for you and along with you.."
---
That night, Ling didn’t sleep.
She pulled the contract from her drawer, ran her fingers over the lines she’d written so coldly, and made a decision.
In the morning, Orm found a note at her easel.
> I don’t want the contract anymore.
I want you. Just you. Without conditions. Without time limits.
— Ling
Orm stared at the page, heart pounding. She didn’t cry.
She ran.
Straight to Ling’s office, paint still on her hands.
Burst through the door.
And kissed her.
Ling didn’t hesitate.
