19:06, 25 October 2024

Wookyung's POV

I was a little surprised to see her sitting in the same class as me. I walked to my seat. After some time, the class started.

She was sitting diagonally from my place. I wasn't able to focus on the class today as I kept looking at her. I don't know why but something attracted me towards her.

***

"Pass... Pass here..."

I run towards the basket, dribbling the ball. And then jumped and threw the ball into the basket. The ball went through it.

"Yes!!"

The others gathered around me for a group hug. They all appreciated me.

So let me tell you something about me. I was in the school basketball team. I used to play basketball since I was a kid. I just used to like it so much. It was everything to me.

We all stood in front of our coach in a straight line.

"You all are doing very well, especially Wookyung. You've improved so much," our coach said.

"Thank you." I bowed.

"Keep practicing like this. We'll win this time as well. Take a break for now." By saying that, the coach.

"If you play like this we'll surely win the next match," Hyunbin said, putting an across my shoulder.

"I'll do my best."

I was chatting with Hyunbin and some others when Jibeom came to me and told that someone was looking for me.

"Who?" I asked.

"I don't know... I think she's the new transfer student. She's waiting there."

He pointed to somewhere. So I followed the direction and saw someone standing some distance away from us. Then I recognized her.

Isn't she that girl?

I excused myself and went to her. She was standing near the wall, looking around the basketball court. She waved at me when she sensed me coming.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"Ah... Last time I couldn't thank you properly so I brought this." She offered me banana milk.

I took it. "Thank you helping me that time. I was able to get to class at the right time." I just nodded. "By the way, you play basketball really well."

"Uh, thanks."

"I gotta go now. Bye." She waved at me before leaving.

I looked at the banana milk and chuckled.

"Woah Wookyung!! Was she another fangirl of yours?" Youngjae said. "She fell for you on her first day... Waah! You're really popular among girls."

"It's not like that."

"Oh come on! Every girl in our school has a crush on you."

"Yah... It's not like that either."

"Then why did she give you this?" He pointed to the banana milk which I was holding.

"It's just... I just helped her with something..."

"Ah I see..."

The other girls of our school keep giving me some presents or keep confessing to me. But Jiyeon wasn't that type.

She's a bit different from the other girls.

***

I kept running into her after that. We got close to each other and soon became good friends. She at that time was a very strong girl.

She was brave. She was cool. She was thoughtful. She wasn't pretentious. She spoke out wherever she needed to. Yes, she did look strong from outside but she was that much soft and caring from inside.

When her grandmother passed away she was so depressed about it as she had lost her parents too. I couldn't do anything else but to stay by her side at that time.

She has gone through so much. She lost everything she had. I wanted to always stay by her side whatever the reason maybe. I didn't want to leave her alone. I liked her that much.

***

I was dribbling the ball and running towards the basket when my ankle got twisted and I fell hard on the floor.

"Ahh... Ahh..." I groaned in pain.

"Somebody call coach Kim quickly."

***

The next thing I knew was that I was taken to the hospital.

I was sitting on the bed, leaning back. And my left leg was plastered. Hyunbin and Jibeom were with me, looking at me pitifully.

"I can't believe you can't play basketball anymore," Hyunbin said.

"Yah... You act like I'm dying here. I'm fine. You guys head home."

They just frowned. I was so frustrated about it that I just yelled at them.

"GET OUT!"

They didn't say anything after that and quietly left. I sighed, closing my eyes.

***

I was looking out of the window when Jiyeon came in who was looking all worried. I just smiled at her.

"My goodness, you idiot," she said as she sat beside the bed.

"How can you call a hospital patient an idiot?"

"I told you to be careful." She raised her voice a bit but then paused. I looked at my fractured leg and frowned.

"Whatever... Keep your head up. All doctors are like that. They just scare you with the worst possible scenarios. Just eat up and practice–"

"I'm fine... I'm sick and tired of it anyways."

"Of what?"

"I'm just sick of... playing sports to win. I started playing basketball because it was fun and made me happy. But I'm not sure what I'm doing anymore."

"No... You're right." I looked at her. "Being happy is more important than wining. And there's no sport out there that's worth risking your health. But what's more important than your health is... Ta-da!..."

She showed a bag full of snacks that she brought for me. "...Eating yummy food! Eat up."

I chuckled. "This is so like you. Khumawo."

"Which one do you want?"

"This one..."
