19:23, 2 February 2025The Wedding Reception February 2nd, 2025———The ballroom of the Four Seasons Baltimore was transformed into a dreamy wonderland that perfectly matched our Love is in the Air theme. Floating cloud arrangements hung at different heights, casting soft shadows on the maroon and gold décor below. Crystal chandeliers twinkled overhead, their light catching on the gold accents scattered throughout the room. The scent of fresh roses and peonies filled the air, a delicate and romantic touch that made everything feel even more magical.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the DJ's voice filled the space, excitement clear in his tone, "please welcome, for their first appearance as husband and wife, Mr. & Mrs. Jelani Love!"
The moment felt surreal. The doors swung open, and we made our grand entrance to Crazy in Love by Beyoncé, the infectious energy of the song perfectly matching the pure euphoria radiating between us. Jelani immediately broke into his signature dance moves, sending our guests into a frenzy. Phones were raised, cameras flashing as we made our way to the dance floor, laughter and cheers echoing through the room.
"Now," the DJ continued, "Mr. and Mrs. Love will share their first dance."
As the opening notes of Best Part by Daniel Caesar and H.E.R. filled the space, Jelani pulled me close. We'd practiced this dance for weeks, but somehow this felt different—more real, more us. The moment was weightless, like floating in a dream we never wanted to wake up from.
"Hi, wife," Jelani whispered, his lips brushing against my ear.
"Hi, husband," I whispered back, unable to stop the giddy smile on my lips.
We swayed in sync, wrapped up in each other. I caught glimpses of our loved ones watching—my mama was crying again (still?), while Mrs. Love dabbed at her eyes beside her. Our wedding party was scattered around the front tables, all of them wearing those soft smiles that told me they were just as emotional as we were.
After our first dance, Julian stepped forward for our brother-sister dance. We'd chosen Count on Me by Bruno Mars, and as we danced, I could see how much this moment meant to him too.
"You look so happy, sis," he said softly, spinning me carefully.
"I am," I replied, squeezing his hand. "Thank you for everything, Jules. For being there, for walking me down the aisle... for everything."
The parent dances followed, with Jelani and his mama swaying to A Song for Mama by Boyz II Men, while I shared a special moment with my mama to A Mother's Love by Raheem DeVaughn. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.
Dinner was served, and soon it was time for the speeches. Meechie stood first, tapping his glass for attention. His best man speech had been highly anticipated—and slightly feared, given his tendency to have zero filter.
"What's up, everybody!" he started, grinning broadly. "For those who don't know me, I'm Meechie, Jelani's best man and brother from another mother. I've known this man since we were kids with big dreams and questionable jump shots."
Laughter rippled through the room as Jelani called out, "Speak for yourself!"
Meechie smirked. "Man, watching Jelani fall in love with Angel was like watching one of those movies where you know exactly how it's gonna end, but you're still at the edge of your seat the whole time."
More laughter. Jelani squeezed my hand under the table, his eyes filled with nothing but love.
"But for real though," Meechie continued, his tone softening, "I've never seen two people more perfectly matched. Angel, you challenge him, support him, and love him in a way that makes all of us believe in real love. And Jelo—my brother, my day one—you found your perfect teammate. Y'all make each other better, push each other higher, and love each other deeper than anyone I know. To the Loves!"
Glasses clinked, and I wiped at my eyes as Jelani stood to embrace his best friend.
Next up was Raven, and I immediately reached for my napkin, knowing I was about to cry again.
"When Angel first told me about Jelani," she began, her voice wavering, "she tried to play it cool. 'He's just different,' she said. But I knew. I knew by the way she couldn't stop smiling when she talked about him, the way she'd check her phone during practice, the way she seemed lighter somehow."
I felt Jelani kiss my temple as I dabbed at my eyes.
"But imagine if Meechie never brought him to the café that weekend I came to visit you," Raven said, shaking her head with a soft laugh. "We wouldn't be here right now. The universe knew what it was doing."
Jelani chuckled. "Shoutout to Meechie for once in his life doing something right."
The room laughed, and Raven continued, "A, you found your person. Your partner. Your home. I love you both so much. To Angel and Jelani!"
Then it was A'ja's turn. She stood, adjusting her dress with a mischievous smile.
"Now, I know we all just got done crying, but I make no promises about keeping this dry-eyed."
She let out a dramatic sigh before smirking. "Listen, I have never liked my sister's boyfriends. Never. They never measured up, never deserved her. But then I met Jelani... and the way he looks at Angel? As if she hung the moon and stars herself? That's when I knew. So, if I say I trust him with my baby sister forever, that's a big deal."
Jelani gave a small nod, like he understood the weight of her words.
"To Angel and Jelani," A'ja finished, raising her glass.
The speeches ended, and the party truly began. The DJ kept the hits coming, the dance floor stayed packed, and at one point, Meechie and Janiah started a dance battle that turned into a full-on showcase, with Flau'jae and Breezy jumping in to show off their moves.
Later, Jelani pulled me aside to a quiet corner, watching our people celebrate.
"You happy, pretty girl?" he asked, his voice warm.
I looked up at him, my heart so full it could burst. "More than happy. You?"
"I got everything I ever wanted right here," he murmured, pulling me in for a kiss.
The cake-cutting was a playful moment—especially when I deliberately smeared frosting on Jelani's nose, only for him to retaliate by kissing me with his frosting-covered lips.
During the bouquet toss, I aimed right at Hailey, who caught it with a surprised shriek. The garter toss had the whole room hollering as Jelani took his sweet time removing it, clothes off by Kehlani and KWN playing in the background.
As the night wound down, our guests lined up outside with sparklers for our grand exit. Before stepping out, I took one last look at the reception—the floating clouds, the twinkling lights, the scattered rose petals on the dance floor. Everything was perfect.
"Ready to start forever, pretty girl?" Jelani asked, offering his arm.
I took it, leaning into him. "With you? Always."
We ran through the tunnel of sparklers, the sound of our loved ones cheering behind us. As we drove away, Jelani pulled me close, his lips against my forehead.
"I love you," he murmured.
"I love you too," I whispered.
Forever had never felt so certain.
