Chapter 25 - FINAL CHAPTER

Katniss' POV

The phone falls out of my hand. A gasp escapes my mouth.

Peeta got into a car accident.

He's currently in surgery, to remove his leg. A part of the front seat got into his bone and it's stuck. They can't get it out without ruining his leg, so amputating it is the best solution.

His brother and father are both gone. Raice was cut in half and was instantly dead. Mr. Mellark hit his head on the window, and got his whole body crushed. Also instantly dead.

Mrs. Mellark is fighting for her life. She became unconscious but she luckily isn't missing any body parts. She collapsed to the front and hit her lungs badly. One lung has almost been destroyed and her skull is fractured. She isn't able to breath without help yet.

Luckily, Sille, Grayn and Aviana were at their grandparents'. They're okay.

I'm storming outside, running to my car. I quickly get inside, and speed away to the hospital.Five minutes later, I arrive. I park my car and walk inside. I walk to the cabinet and ask for Peeta.

"He's currently out of surgery and in a resting room. He'll wake up soon, you can take a seat in the room," she says.

"Thank you."

My heart is speeding up fast as I walk towards his room. I pass a dozens of doors before I finally reach him. I take a deep breath before I open the door. My eyes search for him, and when they find him, I gasp.

He looks horrible, starved and broken.

I take a deep breath and walk towards him. My hand slips inside his once strong and firm one. It's like my heart is finally able to breath again, now that he's with me, that he's in my sight. That I'm able to protect him when I need to.

My other hand reaches out to touch his face for the first time in a whole month. Oh, how much I've missed him. I gently place my fingers in his hair and comb through it. His soft, curly blonde hair. My hand goes down, over his forehead, to his soft, hollowed cheeks. Then, they slip over his soft pinky lips.

It wasn't until then that I noticed the tears slipping from my eyes. He's the most important person in this world to me, and I couldn't protect him.

"I love you," I whisper.

I grab a chair and sit down next to him, still holding onto his hand. After a while, I fall asleep.

I awake a while later, an hour later, as the clock says.

I stand up and look at Peeta. My hand does the same thing it did earlier.

I whisper "I love you," again, but this time I receive a cringing nose. He's waking up.Then I see the mesmerizing piercing blue eyes I've been longing for so long.

"I love you too," the perfect voice creaks.

"Peeta!" I exclaim, tears streaming again."You don't know how much I missed you. I'm so sorry for leaving you, but I had to see my dad's grave-"

"It's okay now, I have you back again," he smiles, painfully.

I impulsively lean down and connect our lips. The kiss is filled with longing, fear, love and grief. I dint know how long we've been kissing, but it feels so short. I can't get enough of him.

But after a while we have to break away for air.I place my forehead against his and look into his calming ocean colored eyes.

"You don't know how much you mean to me. I love you with all my heart, but don't ever leave me again like that. You didn't wait for me."
