Chapter 18
14:01, 27 July 2014The team heard the bang before they saw the explosion.
“Hanna!” Reid shouted and began running towards where they’d seen her walking with a tall, dark haired man.
“Spence wait, it might still be dangerous!” JJ followed as Hotch shouted for paramedics down his phone. Morgan and Prentiss began to secure the surrounding area and check for trapped victims.
Reid and JJ found Hanna lying face down on the pavement, reaching for something towards their left. When they looked across, they saw the tall man trapped under some debris.
“Hanna, it’s okay” Reid reassured her when she opened her eyes but she shook her head.
“Johnny” she whispered. Reid took an educated guess that that was the name of the man.
“He’s fine, we’ll get you to safety then lift him out of the debris” JJ promised but Hanna shook her head again.
“He has to be safe” she explained “I have to know he will be okay, Spencer, please” she directed the question at Reid deliberately, hoping he would do as she asked.
“I’ll go help Emily” JJ said before standing up and running over to Prentiss as Morgan came to join Reid and Hanna.
“Help me lift her to her feet” Reid demanded but Morgan protested.
“Listen kid, we can’t move her until to paramedics are here”
“No” Reid shook his head “We have to show her that man is okay otherwise she isn’t going anywhere”. Morgan hesitated for a moment but, once he realised Reid was trying to move Hanna on his own, Morgan agreed to help. They gently wrapped her arms around their shoulders and pulled her up, avoiding the broken bits of building and glass that surrounded the three of them.
“Thank-you” Hanna breathed once she was up. She was a little dizzy so Reid and Morgan had to more or less carry her over to Johnny. She fell to the floor by his body, but not out of pain. At least not physical pain “I am so, so sorry” she began to cry a little. The two agents weren’t sure what to do so they knelt beside her.
“Alex?” Johnny’s eyes fluttered open and he tried to move, only to stop immediately after a cry of pain. Morgan frowned at Reid who shrugged slightly, both unsure of why Johnny was calling her Alex.
“You have to be okay” Hanna whispered through small tears “You have to live”
“Alex, what happened?” Johnny frowned and Hanna decided now was the time to finally tell him.
“My name is not Alex” she stated.
“What?”
“That was my brother’s name” she explained and Johnny stared at her for a long moment as he realised why she’d lied.
“You didn’t trust me?” he spoke softly.
“No, I did” Hanna rushed to reassure him “But I liked the idea of having a person who did not know everything” she admitted slowly and Johnny half rolled his eyes before wincing.
“I’m kind of struggling to breathe here, any chance you get me out soon?” he asked but the two agents shared a look “What?”
“We have to wait until the paramedics get here” Reid informed him.
“Well I’d like to get out now if possible” Johnny sighed.
“No, Spencer is right” Hanna said “You will be moved safely once the professionals arrive”
“Spencer?” Johnny frowned then glared at the thin agent.
“Yes?” Reid frowned back
“I don’t like you” Johnny stated and Hanna smiled ever so slightly, glad to see he was back to his usual self.
“Why not?” Reid still had the same look of confusion on his face
“You didn’t trust Al...wait, what’s your real name?” Johnny suddenly looked up at the girl he had known for seven and a half years.
“Hanna-Rose Black” she answered “Alexander was my brother, so occasionally I use his name” she explained
“Well then, I don’t like you because you didn’t trust Hanna-Rose” Johnny looked back at Reid.
“I prefer Hanna actually” Hanna cut in but Johnny was too busy glaring at Reid.
“I did trust her” he defended but Johnny sighed.
“Bullshit”
“Johnny” Hanna scolded and he smiled cheekily at her “Now is not the time for arguing” she warned.
“Whatever” Johnny rolled his eyes. There was a long pause before he glanced at the bricks and other debris he was half buried under “You know all this crap is really starting to hurt my leg” he complained.
“Where are the paramedics?” Hanna looked at Morgan who shrugged before whipping out his cell phone and asking.
“I’m so tired” Johnny suddenly mumbled but Reid frowned.
“Why? Didn’t you sleep well?”. It sounded like a stupid and quite frankly random question but there was no reason why Johnny would suddenly be tired. At least not a good reason.
“No, I slept really well thanks for asking” Johnny replied in a quiet voice “I’m just really sleepy”
“That is not right” Hanna’s eyes filled with worry as she glanced at Reid who was starting to panic.
“Johnny is there anything else wrong apart from the pain?” he asked.
“I dunno” Johnny’s voice was getting quieter and quieter “There’s something wet around my legs I guess...”
“What!” Hanna practically shouted “What is damp? Is there a puddle?”
“I dunno”
“Oh my gosh” she began to panic even more “Erm...let me check” she carefully began to slip her hand through a small gap under the rubble, near Johnny’s legs. She felt around for a while until she reached liquid then puller her hand back out which was now red.
“Crap” Morgan had already ended the phone call and was now staring at the blood on Hanna’s hand “If he’s feeling tired and his legs are damp then...”
“He’s losing blood” Reid finished in a whisper.
“Well, we have to stop the bleeding then” Hanna said “We have to...”
“Hanna we can’t get to his legs, we don’t even know exactly where the wound is” Morgan told her.
“No, we have to save him I cannot...where are the damn paramedics!” she shouted.
“Hey Hanna-Rose” Johnny suddenly whispered “Calm down”
“I cannot stay calm when...”
“Shh” he cut her off “We both knew this wasn’t gonna last forever”
“Johnny” Hanna said quietly as tears began to stream down her cheeks.
“I guess this is goodbye”
