Chapter 10

22:09, 11 December 2013

She was being surprisingly calm; Reid thought as Morgan walked her into the interrogation room and sat her down at the table. Of course she wasn’t going to be interviewed like a criminal or anything but the whole team decided it was the safest place to ask her questions about what was going on. Plus, if whoever was trying to kill her thought she had actually being arrested then she had to stay in the BAU for a while, to make it believable.

“So are you going to tell us what’s going on?” Hotch sat down in front of Hanna. She smirked and looked down at her hands, staying quiet “Miss. Black?”

“Actually, the correct term is Dr. Black” she said before glancing back up at Hotch who frowned.

“But you never completed the course”

“I did” she contradicted again “Only I may have used a different name. It was the first of many safety precautions carried out after my father’s death”. There was an awkward silence.

Prentiss and Gideon walked into the viewing room and stood next to Reid.

“There’s no way she started a PhD course in Psychology two days after her dad died” he said.

“You think she’s lying?” Prentiss asked.

“Hard to tell” was Reid’s reply. They both turned their attentions back to the questioning.

Morgan stepped forward “Dr. Black, you’ve been doing an awful lot of safety precautions in the past few years. Moving between states, using your brother’s name and somehow changing your appearance when you go and visit Dr. Reid in Las Vegas” he basically glared at Hanna.

“Have you ever heard of a wig Agent Morgan?” she raised her eyebrows at him before looking back down at her hands. Hotch smirked slightly before opening a file and skim-reading it.

“Can you tell us why you think someone is planning to kill you?” he looked back up at Hanna.

“I assume the answer is in that file” she nodded towards the paper in Hotch’s hand.

“Well, it’s not” Morgan mumbled with a glare.

“God gave you eyes, use them” she glared back. He sighed before taking the file from Hotch, reading it himself then shrugging.

“Nothing” he put it back on the table.

“Have you considered the deaths of my family members?” Hanna asked.

“You mean those tragic accidents?” Hotch frowned. Hanna suddenly became very intense and angry.

“They were most certainly not accidents” she replied through gritted teeth.

“Car crash, gas explosion and natural causes. Sounds like accidents to me” Morgan was almost taunting her. The team knew it was a tactic to get her to open up but that didn’t stop Reid and Prentiss from feeling extremely uncomfortable and almost angry with the way Morgan was acting in this very sensitive situation.

“They were not accidents” Hanna repeated and full on glared at Morgan in a way that said ‘May God smite you down’.

“Then what were they?” Morgan smirked “You’re not trying to tell me you believe in all that superstitious crap about how ‘everything happens for a rea…”

“They were murders!” Hanna suddenly shouted at him before closing her eyes, sighing and leaning back in her seat.

“What?” Morgan’s façade faltered.

“I am going to make an educated guess and say that you are not going ignore what I just said?” Hanna mumbled.

“Not a chance” Morgan shook his head.

“I suppose I will have to tell you the whole story then” she sat up straight before looking at first Hotch and then Morgan “A certain group of people have been wanting me dead for a very long time. Actually, ever since my brother and I were conceived. When my mother was carrying us she fell down the stairs three times. All three times there were no witnesses. Only my mother was convinced she was pushed. My father assumed it was a hallucination resulting as a side effect of her medication and merely ignored it. When I Alex and I were eight months old, I received and illness. But the doctors could not explained how I had contracted this almost fatal disease considering it was a virus native to South Africa. They treated it and I made a miraculous recovery. Shortly after my third birthday, I was hit by a car and when I was around four someone broke into my house and set my bedroom on fire. Luckily, Alex was there as we shared a bedroom therefore he managed to wake me up and get me out before we received any serious injuries. Finally, one month after Alex and I turned five, our mother was killed in a car crash as you well know. But what they did not tell you was I was also in the car” she stopped and let out a deep breath. The whole team were stunned.

“You don’t think they were coincidences?” Morgan asked finally.

“Agent Morgan, you may think it was just in my head but my father agreed with me. Something strange was definitely wrong. He knew danger followed me around. There were other little things, creepy men watching me, numerous locks broken on our front door. My mother was convinced right from the start that someone was out to get me only my father did not believe her until she died. That is why we moved to America. The day our flight was scheduled, there was a terrorist attack and a bomb threat. Our plane was cancelled as a result. It was the first time they had gotten sloppy. Never again would they make the same mistake”.

There was a long pause filled with nothing but awkwardness. The team exchanged glances, not sure what to do next until Hanna suddenly said.

“Now, let me speak with Spencer Reid”
