Chapter 1- Starting fresh

10:23, 14 August 2022

It's the first day of school- senior year.

"Will you be all right walking home by yourself?" Emma's dad John asked her.

"Dad, I'll be fine, really don't worry, it's not that far," Emma rolled her eyes as she opened the car door to get out.

"Well if you have any problem what so ever call me."

"I will," Emma promised. She slid her bag over her shoulder and closed the car door.

"Niall should be around somewhere right?" John asked before putting the car into drive.

"Yeah dad, don't worry I'll be ok, it's not my first day of school, I know how this works," Emma shook her head at him.

"It's your first day at this school."

"They are all the same dad, popular kids, losers, and invisibles just like me.." The last part Emma whispered to herself so her dad won't be able to hear.

As he drove off she turned and took in the school's view.

This school wasn't any different from the other ones she was at, only maybe slightly smaller.

There were the pretty girls with expensive clothes and cars, their boyfriends on a leash by their sides.

Across from them were the Geeks, the ones who when the time comes will have good jobs, making enough money to buy whatever their heart desires remembering those pretty girls who put them down and making sure to make up for their loser days.

The skaters were not far, and the potheads. Yep, same as every other school.

Emma composed her hold to her sketchbook which didn't fit into her bag and made her way through the school gates.

"Emma! Over here!" Niall, Emma's cousin waved from across the yard. He was sitting with another boy and girl. Emma smiled waving back, pacing in his direction.

She passed the pretty rich girls who eyed the pink streak in her hair. The streak was barely noticeable since it wasn't in her top layers of hair, but since she had her hair up in a messy bun some of it showed through her dark brown hair. They also eyed her skinny jeans, over sized top, and the dark purple Dr. martens on her feet. But Emma didn't pay attention to them or their looks learning long ago not to care. However not paying attention to what was going around her, only looking ahead to where she was headed caused her to collide into something, making her drop the sketchbook ,and making the bag slip of her shoulder and to the floor spreading all her belongings around.

"Damn," Emma mattered to herself bending down to collect her things.

"Fuck- I'm sorry, but you should be watching where you're going," A deep voice hissed. Her eyes shot up to find pretty green eyes staring back at her, they had hardness in them, but yet they twinkled with some humor, maybe the fact he was holding one of her tampons in his hand was the reason.

"Gosh," She blushed snatching it from his hand and burying it deep in her bag, "I'm sorry," She muttered quickly collecting the rest of her things. She got to her feet as the green eyed boy picked up her sketchbook. He straightened from his kneeling position h opened it up and looked through it.

"This is your work?" He looked down at her, being so much taller than she.

"What's going on here?" Niall appeared by Emma's side before she had a chance to answer the boy.

"I fell over," She mumbled back to Niall, who took the sketchbook out of the boy's hand and picked up his cousin's bag.

Niall held on to Emma's arm as he turned her away from the boy, not giving him another glance.

As Niall leads me away to his two friends, I notice everyone staring at us.

"Did I do something wrong?" I whisper to Niall.

"From all the people to walk into it had to be him.." He sighs, not really giving an answer.

We reach his friends who are also watching us, the girl's eyes flicker back to the boy we left behind.

"Quite an entrance" The boy offers me his hand to shake. "I'm Louis," He smiles, "And this is my girlfriend Eleanor." The girl stretches out her hand to me as well.

"I can't believe he is back," She claims, her eyes following the boy. I turn to watch him like the rest. I see the kids around are glancing at him too, but it doesn't seem to bother him, he swipes back his curls and climbs the stairs to the building.

"Who is that anyway?" I inquire.

"You don't know?" Louis raises his brows.

"She's new to the town, so she's not in the loop," Niall explains.

"That is Harry Styles, back at Chapel high after two years in juvie," Eleanor declares.

"Juvie? What has he done?" I ask her.

"Well, they say he killed his sister.."

"What?" my mouth falls open at the words coming from Louis.

"What do you mean they say? He did the time, he committed the crime," Eleanor frowns up at her boyfriend.

"That doesn't mean he did it," I state. They all turn to look at me. "If he really killed his sister he would get much more than two years," I explain.

"Em's dad is the new chief of police, so she is really into the whole crime thing," Niall tells his friends.

"Your dad is chief Horan?" Louis grins in understanding, "My dad is a police man too, I guess you're the bosses daughter."

"Come on, we'll be late," Niall hands my bag back to me so he could get his own.

I have to go to the office to get my schedule so they walk me to the front office and then wave goodbye as I turn to stride in.

Harry's POV

I looked up from my seat as the girl I knocked over before walked in. She was a looker, with those big blue eyes of hers, and that pink in her hair. She stopped in her place when she saw me sitting there, her cheeks once again going red. I watched her as she glanced sideways and decided to take a seat across from me, on the far side.

"I'm Harry, by the way," I said to her.

"So I've heard" She had her bag and art book on her lap hugging them in between her arms.

"What did you hear?" I challenged her. I was sure Horan told her all about my time in juvie the moment they got far enough to start whispering.

"Enough," She eyed me.

"So what is your name?" I smirked at her. Her cheeks turned another shade of red.

"Um.. Emma"

"Emma...?" I tilted my head in question.

"Emma Horan," She smiled slightly. She had a nice smile, straight white teeth showing through her natural pink lips. I liked that, she didn't have all that rubbish the girls have on they're faces.

"Ha, the chief's daughter," I nodded.

"The one and only," she sounded slightly bitter.

The door opened and Principal Hunt walked in.

"Mr. Styles," She acknowledged me turning to see Emma. "Miss Horan, lovely to meet you,"

She smiled at the girl. After a few moments of chatter she handed over the schedules we were waiting for.

"If you have any questions my office door is always open for you," Principal Hunt smiled at Emma, kind of ignoring me.

"Thanks", Emma smiled back. what a smile.

"Mr. Styles, do you have any questions?" She turned to me, finally remembering I'm present too.

"No, can I go now?"

She nodded at us and went into her office closing the door after her.

Emma's POV

"So," Harry snatches the sheet out of my hands comparing it to his. "It seems we share some classes Horan," He hands it back to me. He has no smile to offer with that statement.

"Come on then, we're late as it is," He opens the main office door and holds it for me. I walk out holding on tightly to my sketchbook. His stride is faster than mine, walking a few steps ahead of me. I check him out. He has on tight black jeans with a black Tshirt and a blue and red plaid top over it hanging open. He has a blue beanie hanging out of his back pocket making him look slightly like one of those thugs. He has black ray bands hanging on the neck line of his black Tshirt, I've noticed them before. He is quiet good looking, in a not really trying kind of way. Holding a notebook and pen in one hand while the sheet of paper in the other.

"Can you walk any slower?" He turns his head glancing back at me, stopping in his place.

"I didn't ask you to wait for me," I reply, not in a snappy way, but enough to let him know he doesn't own me or that he might have caught me checking him out.

"Suit yourself," He shrugs and continues on walking, faster than before, leaving me standing behind, watching. I wonder what his deal is. So he did some time, he has a fresh start now, so why act this way?

I reach the class room I am supposed to attend pushing open the door.

"Again?" The teacher turns from the board to see who it is, looking down at me from the rim of his reading glasses.

"Sorry, I'm not sure I have the right class room," I glance down at my paper checking it again, as all the kids watching me.

"Wrong room love," A dark haired boy speaks up, another boy sitting next to him chuckles bumping fists. A blond girl sitting behind the dark haired boy slaps his shoulder and offers me a smile.

"Show me your sheet," The teacher sighs. I hand it over watching him check it out.

"Miss Horan, you are indeed in the right class, take a seat," He offers the paper back to me and turns back to the board as if I had never interrupted him. The class is still eyeing me. I walk over to the last empty seat in the class. It is by the blond girl, who leans her chin on her palm watching me. I get to my seat and look up. It is in front of Harry. He isn't looking at me though, but at a boy in front of the class who has his back to us and his head down low.

I shake my head slightly and take a seat.

"I'm Perrie," The blond girl offers me a wide smile. "You're the new Chief's daughter."

"That's me," I shrug slightly, and turn back to face the board.

"Hay Horan- do you party?" The dark haired boy inquires loudly.

"No," I mutter back.

"You will," The boy sitting beside him claims, and they both laughing again.

"Mr. Malik and Mr. Payne if you don't stop disturbing my class you will get detention."

"No can do Mr. D, we have football practice," The dark haired boy states.

"So be quiet!" The teacher scolds, turning back to the board.

Harry's POV

I was watching him sit there with his head down low, when I heard Zayn and Liam start talking to Emma. A bunch of dick heads, that's what they are.

I knew she was in the right class because I saw her sheet, but I figured the teacher could check for himself, since I didn't feel like speaking up.

"Psss Styles," Zayn turned to me next. "So how was juvie man?"

I ignored him, looking at Tyler's little brother's back.

"If looks could kill ha?" Liam chuckled, a little loud just enough for some of the kids around us to hear. I heard Perrie gasp as the rest of the class turned to us.

"That's it Mr. Payne you have detention," The teacher snapped, But no one was listening. Zayn and Liam were watching me as I stood up from my chair leaning over my table.

"Want to try it out?" I gave Liam a hard look. I watched him lean back from me shifting uncomfortably in his seat.

"Mr. Styles sit down unless you want detention as well!"

"That won't work on him sir, he just did two years in juvie, detention is nothing compare to that," Some other kid spoke up.

At that Harry sat back in his chair looking straight at the teacher.

So you see, my brother didn't have a clean start, getting bullied by his classmates. Even though it seemed as if it didn't bother him it did. I know my brother well, watching his eyes turn black, his jaw clenched close. His eyes fell on Emma sitting in front of him tracing her finger on the cover of her sketchbook, the little pink in her hair glowing in the classroom's light. She was the chief's daughter. Harry knew she might just be the one to help him get justice for my murder, and helping him clear his name.
