Chapter 56

I change into my street clothes and join hands with Kelly. We exit the firehouse and head out to his car. Once we're on our way home I say, "Can we go to Med first? I want to see how the little girl from yesterday is doing."

Kelly nods and gets into the right lane. When we arrive at the hospital we go inside and make our way to the front desk. When we arrive there I smile at Maggie and say, "Could Kelly and I go up and visit the little girl from the fire on Ellerslie road yesterday? We were the firefighters who rescued her."

Maggie nods and says, "Of course. Dr. Manning will take you up to her room."

We nod and follow Natalie up to the pediatric ward. When we arrive there she leads us into the little girl's room. Her parents see us and immediately burst into tears and rise to greet us. Dr. Manning excuses herself as Kelly and I are engulfed in a massive hug.

When the parents pull away from us we all take a seat in the different chairs scattered throughout the room. I exchange a few words with the toddler, who is fully alert and seems to be doing well. Once I'm done talking with the girl her mother turns to me and says, "We wanted to thank the two of you for going back in to save Hailey. If you hadn't done that our daughter wouldn't be here. Instead she's doing great and will make a full recovery, all because of you two."

Kelly and I smile and then I say, "It's our pleasure. We do the job we do for calls like this when we can save people and keep families whole. That's what the job is all about and it makes those bad days better."

Both parents smile and then Kelly and I decide to head home. When we arrive at the apartment we immediately take a seat on the couch. I cuddle into his chest as he picks something for us to watch on TV.

As we sit and watch I can't help but think about how lucky I am to have a loving husband who supports me in all that I do and an adopted son who loves and cares for me as if I'm his own mother. I wouldn't trade my wonderful life for anything else in the world.
