Chapter 33

                 

---Severide's POV---

   After 20 minutes a doctor walks out of Quinn's room. I stand so we're eye to eye and then he says, "We've done everything in our power but she basically has sixth degree burns in the same spots as her previous third degree burns. She's very weak."

I nod, knowing that there is more. He takes a deep breath and says, "All of the odds are against her right now. She has a less than one percent chance of survival. I'm so sorry."

I collapse against the doctor and cry into his shoulder. He pats my back and when I recover I look at Quinn on the bed. The nurses are covering her in bandages and at this point I don't care how many people see me cry. The love of my life is going to die.

It seems like I can never be happy. I'm happy for a while with someone I love and then something happens and I get dumped back at square one.

After looking at her for a bit I go out to the waiting area where everyone from 51 is on the edge of their seats. Casey stands up, puts his arm around me, and says, "How is she?"

"She has a less than one percent chance of living."

Everyone's expressions change as Casey envelopes me in a hug. I cry some more and then I take a seat. After I calm down a bit I say, "I was going to propose to her after shift. I bought the ring after she left me alone at dinner on our one year anniversary. If she was going to transfer houses I couldn't let her leave without claiming her as mine. After she told me that she wasn't going anywhere I couldn't find the courage to propose. I waited a month and now I may never get the chance to propose."

Hermann looks me right in the eye and says, "You'll get to propose. Quinn won't leave you."

With that they all leave and go to Quinn's room to keep her company.
