Chapter 13
00:31, 6 April 2022KILLER QUEEN CHAPTER 13
I was born in space, I've never felt the sun on my face or breathed real air or floated in the water. None of us have. For three generations the ark has kept what's rest of the human race alive but now our home is dying and we are the last hope of mankind. One hundred prisoners sent on desperate mission to the ground, each of us is here because we broke the law but on the ground there is no law. All we have to do is survive, we will be tested by the earth, by the secrets it hides and most of all each other.
Raven's screams filled the drop ship as I work quickly grounding up different plants to make the same numbing medicine that I gave Lincoln.
"That should stop the external bleeding." Clarke says as she pulls the sizzling knife off Raven's abdomen.
"I don't understand. How did Murphy get a gun?" Finn asks frantically making Bellamy shake his head, "Long story."
"We got lucky." Raven says breathlessly, "If Murphy hit the fuel tank instead of me, we'd all be dead."
"Wait," Clark quickly cuts her off, "There's rocket fuel down there? Enough to build a bomb?" I turn my head to see Raven.
Raven nods, "Enough to build a hundred bombs. If we had any gunpowder left." Raven looks to me making me subtly shake my head before turning back around, grabbing a fine cloth I place all the ingredients in before twisting the cloth closed. I hold the filled cloth over a make shift cup before squeezing it, watching as liquid starts to drop into the cup I wait until there's just under a mouth full before walking over to Raven offering it to her, " What is it?" She asks making me narrow my eyes, "Drink it and find out." Raven looked hesitant but brings the cup up anyway, drinking all its contents before sighing leaning back, "Thanks."
"Let's get back to the Reapers. Maybe they'll help us." Bellamy asks while holding Lincoln's book staring at the drawing. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right?"
"Not this enemy." Clarke say while looking at Finn, "We saw them. Trust me, it's not an option."
"Yeah I'd have to agree with Clarke on this." I look up at Bellamy, "They're more of a, have you for dinner then have you over for dinner type." Making him look up at me quickly.
"There's no time for this." Finn interrupts, "Can she walk or not."
"No, we have to carry her." Clarke instructs but Raven cuts her off, "The hell you will. I'm good to go." Raven tries to push herself up but I quickly lay my hand on her shoulder pushing her back down, "Listen up feathers," I lean down to her face, " I don't know if you're aware but that bullet is still inside you and we have no way of knowing yet if your bleeding internally so if you start walking around and that bullet moves it will kill you Raven! So you're going to sit here, shut up and wait patiently for someone to go get the stretcher! Under no circumstances do I want to see your dumb ass walking around? Got it!" My voice sounding angrier by the end.
Raven nods her head, "I'll go get the stretcher." Finn tells her quickly getting ready to leave but Bellamy's voice stops him, "Can't run away fast enough, huh?. Real brave."
Finn storms up to Bellamy's face, " Dying in a fight you can't win isn't brave Bellamy. It's stupid."
"Spoken like every coward who's ever run from a fight." Bellamy steps closer to Finn.
"Okay! That's enough!" Clarke stops the two males, "It's time to go."
"What if they follow us." Bellamy says, "Its a 120 mile walk to the ocean."
"We're wasting time. If he wants to stay, he can stay." Finn say frustration clear on his face.
"No he can't!" Clarke calls out as Finn leaves the drop ship, "We can't do this without you Bellamy." Clarke say walking up to him.
"What do you want me to say Clarke?"
"I want you to say that you're with us, those kids out there listen to you." I watch as Clarke try's to convince him.
"They're lining up to go. They listen to you more."
Clarke shakes her head, "I gave them an easy choice. But five minutes ago, they were willing to fight and die for you. You inspire them. I'm afraid we're going to need that again before this day is through." Clarke looks away from Bellamy to me, " You're with us?"
"Do you even have to ask?"
"Yes." Clarke looks at me seriously.
I smirk at her, "I'm here aren't I."
Clarke lets out a small huff before turning to walk out of the drop ship but she turns back to me, " I'm glad you are." She then leaves quickly.
"She's starting to like me, that one," I smirk, "Better be careful or Finn will get the wrong idea."
Bellamy let's out an exhausted huff, "Wrong time to be cracking out jokes Mystery."
I shrug, "When's the right time? When you're all out there dying." Bellamy and Feathers both look at me, "What? It's the wrong decision. Going out there. We'll have no cover. We'll be walking out into the open where the grounder scouts most likely already are and you think they won't take the chance to kill! To weaken the numbers. At least staying here we could have formed a plan, use our knowledge of our camp to our advantage but instead Clarke's making the fools choice."
"You really believe we'd be safer here?" Raven barely breaths out making me shake my head, "Not safer. Our odds would have been better."
***********
I make sure all my weapons are in place, bow, arrows, daggers and the addition of a small knife I've made that's tucked into my boot.
"Gunners, at the ready."
Here we go.
"Keep your eyes open."
The surviving hundred all start to pour out of the safety of the gates, all looking around frantically, making sure nothing is coming for them.
Fools... what does that make me if I'm following them.
I hang back a moment, watching them all go, watching as they take Raven out on a stretcher I shake my head.
"We shouldn't be leaving." I voice my thoughts as Bellamy walks up beside me, though he doesn't get the chance to respond as Clarke walks up to us, "You did good here Bellamy."
Bellamy shakes his head, "Eighteen dead."
"Eighty two alive. You did good." Clarke nods her head.
"I wouldn't be counting number too soon." They both looked at me saying nothing, the probability of more of the hundred dying was high as much as they didn't want to admit it.
Bellamy nodded his head before picking up a barrel and dousing out the last fire left in the camp. The three of us, with no more words to say, followed the other out the gate and started the trek towards the sea.
In my gut though.. I just knew we weren't going to make it far.
*********
We had only been walking for half an hour or so. I kept far to the left of the group, just enough to see them. I had spotted Bellamy a couple time looking around for me but never once did he question anyone where I was. I've been keeping an eye on Octavia who had been leading the group ever since we'd left camp.
One's at the front are more likely to die.
I kept watching her, only straying every couple of minutes to survey the area for threats. Suddenly the group stopped making me go on high alert, I moved slightly closer and ahead of the group, my eyes searching relentlessly through the brush of the forest. Then, I finally see it, a grounder through the tress about to throw a circular blade at the group. I don't think twice and start running, even once the blade left his hand I just sprint faster. Swiftly I ram myself into his side using my shoulder making him gasp out and before we even hit the ground I pull a dagger from my waist and aim for the head. I let out a huff as I push myself off the body.
Damn.. right through the eye.
Behind me I can hear the hundred, some shouting, some crying out, complete disarray but I ignore them and look out in front of me.
There's more out there.. I can feel it.
**********
"Embry!" I hear Bellamy call my name as I slide through the gate just before it closes, "What." I call out not seeing him yet but quickly catch sight of both Blake's and Clarke rushing towards me.
"Where were you?" Clarke all but shouted at me making my eyes narrow, "Where do you think, or did you not see that blade fly at that kids face!" I hiss.
Bellamy looks at my shirt noticing the blood on it, "You get him?"
"Obviously." He nods at me.
"What now?" Octavia questions loudly.
Clarke looks around, "Lincoln said scouts would be the first to arrive."
Octavia nods, "If it's just scouts, we can fight our way out. That's what Lincoln would do."
Bellamy scoffs, "We're done doing what that grounder would do. We tried it and now Drew is dead. You wanna be next?"
"That grounder saved our lives," Finn chimes in, "I agree with Octavia. For all we know, there's one scout out there."
"One scout with insanely good aim," Jasper says, worry clear in his voice.
Not anymore.
"Clarke, we can still do this." Octavia tries to push, Clarke doesn't respond for a moment but then looks up at me, "Embry?"
I didn't need her to ask a question because I already knew, "It's too late," I shook my head, "There's more then the one scout I killed out there." Clarke nods slightly at my words.
"We can fight them." Octavia try's to sway Clarke.
"How do you know there's more? For all we know you killed the one that was out there." Finn questions me making my agitation rise, "Because I just told you he wasn't the only one! They're not that dumb to only send one scout Finn." My anger seething, "And if you'd ever remembered anything in that dumb head of yours you'd remember that Lincoln said 'get home before the scouts arrive' not one scout, scouts! There here Finn!"
"She's right." I look up to Clarke ignoring Finn, " Lincoln told us that. Looks like you've got your fight." She tells Bellamy making him look out towards the group, "Okay then. This is what we've been preparing for! Kill them before they kill us! Gunners, to your posts. Use the tunnels to get in and out. From now on the gate stays closed." I watch as everyone starts running to their post, Finn staying where he was shaking his head.
Idiot.
************
"We've got 25 rifles with 20 rounds each, give or take. Roughly 500 rounds of ammo." Bellamy explains to Raven, Clarke, Finn and I, " While you three were gone, we made some improvements. Thanks to Raven, the gully is mined."
"Partially mined," she huffs out, "Thanks to Murphy."
"Still," Bellamy continues, "Its the main route in. If the grounder us it, we'll know. She also built grenades."
"That's not many," Clarke points out making Raven nod, "Again, thank you Murphy."
Bellamy places the grenade back on the table, "We'll make them count," he points down to the makeshift map of the camp, "If the grounders make it through the front gate.. guns and grenades should force them back."
I scoff, "That's if anyone's aim has gotten better, need I remind you all of the track record for some of those idiots out there. Some can barely walk straight let alone shoot a gun."
"Not helping." Clarke says then turns to Bellamy, "And then?"
"Then we close the door and pray." Raven answers for him making me scoff, " Pray to who? Murphy."
"The ship won't keep them out." Clarke points out her worry making us all look at each other.
"Let's not let them get through the gate," Bellamy states, "All foxholes, listen up," he says into his radio, "Keep your eyes and ears open. Inflict casualties. As many as possible. You can hold them off long enough to make them turn back. That's the plan."
"That's alway you plan. Just like the bomb at the bridge." Finn pokes at Bellamy, " Damn right. You got a better idea?"
I laugh, "Oh Finn won't, but I might," All three of them look to me making me smirk, "I'm surrounded by forgetful idiots-"
"Can you, just this once, not insult us and just get to the point ." Bellamy cuts me off crossing his arms.
I raise my eyebrow, " I remember a little bird mentioning something about how we we're lucky she got shot and not the fuel tanks." I emphasised the last two words.
Raven shakes her head looking at me confused, "But there's no gun powder?" She sends me a look, probably remembering the tin I had her put away, shaking my head I look to Clarke who stares back at me for a moment before her eyes go wide, "We don't want bombs... we want to blastoff."
"Finally." I smirk, Raven following suit, "Draw them in close. Fire the rockets. A ring of fire."
Bellamy nods, a smirk slowly making its way on his face as well, "Barbecued grounders. I like it."
Finn turns to Raven, "Will it work?"
Raven thinks for a moment, "The wirings a mess down there, but yeah. You give me enough time, I'll cook them real good."
" You're welcome." I shrug.
Now just one more piece of business. Where my gunpowder and hydrazine?
**************
I can't believe that bloody pigeon.
I pull the blankets from her bed up and look underneath.
She really did.
I look at the tin of gunpowder at the top end and the the tin of hydrazine at the bottom before reaching under and grabbing them both.
"Bloody pigeon hid them under her bed."
I stand with them both then walk over to her work station setting them both down, noticing a good size glass jar I grab that and get to work. I put the tin on hydrazine inside the glass jar and then grab the gunpowder. Slowly I pour the gunpowder around the tin of hydrazine then grab the lid for the jar and screw it on tight. I make my way out of Pigeons tent and towards the front gate, stopping by Bellamy who turns and looks at me then the jar I'm holding.
"What is that? Is that gunpowder?" I could hear anger creeping in his voice, " I know for a fact Jasper hasn't made a new batch that fast."
I look down at the bomb then back to him, " I saved it for a rainy day and right now it's storming."
Bellamy shook his head, "Of corse you did. You know we need that right?"
I nod, "Exactly why I have it, this could save your life you know."
Bellamy sighs, "You're killing me Mystery."
"Not today I'm not." I say grabbing his radio from his belt, "Alight! Listen up idiots and listen good! I don't need to tell you all my name you all know! Now, I'm about to walk out the front gate and I swear if any of you shoot at me I'll skin you alive! Got it!"
I hand the radio back to Bellamy before moving towards the front gate, Bellamy following nodded at the boy on gate duty who opened it just enough for us to squeeze through. Ignoring Bellamy I look out and scan the forest in front of me, only when satisfied I walk to the middle of the gate then face the forest and start to count ten paces away. Looking down then back to the gate checking the distance, nodding to myself I crouch down and start to dig with my hands, making a hole just big enough to fit the jar snuggle but also level with the ground. I smooth a thin layer of dirt just over the lid, leaving some of the silver metal of the lid peaking through. I stand dusting off my hands then look at Bellamy, " For once, you're not even going to ask."
He shakes his head, "I'll leave it a mystery. Come on." He gestures back towards the gate but just as we're about to go through Finn pushes his way out.
Bellamy grabs his should, "Hey! Where do you think you're going?"
Finn shakes his head, "I have to go to Lincoln's cave!" He say franticly.
"What?" I feel my brows furrow, "Why? Finn there's scouts still out there."
"You not going anywhere." Bellamy tell him making Finn push him back, "I have to! For Raven, she needs medicine, a coagulant. So unless you have some Embry, I'm going."
Bellamy looks to me and I'm trying to think what medicines I have on me, shaking my head, "I don't have any."
"Then I'm going."
"Do you even know the way?" I question him making him falter, " So what was the plan? Run around in the woods until you stumble across it?"
Finn getting frustrated now, scoffed, "Do you always have to be-"
"I'll take you dumbass."
"What!" Both males said at the same time but Bellamy shaking his head, "No! No way! We need you here!"
"Yeah," I nod, "But we need Raven alive for this plan to work, so if she needs this medicine to stable her I'm going to get it! I'm not arguing about it Bellamy! Let's go space boy! Keep up because I'm not slowing down for you!" I start running, not even caring to see if Finns keeping up.
***************
"It's just up here." I whisper to Finn as we walk towards the entrance of the cave, Finn seeing it races towards it making me lose sight of him.
"I wouldn't." I mumble softly to myself, slowly stepping into to cave I hear a thud then a shout. Walking further in I see Finn on the floor holding his stomach, Talon standing above him and Lincoln further in the cave, " You alright down there Finn." I chuckle leaning against the rock wall, Talon and Lincoln's eyes flash to me.
"Shut up." Finn wheezes out before trying to stand, Talon grabbing his arm and pulling him up the rest of the way.
"I told you to leave!" Lincoln shouts at Finn and I, but I ignore him walking over to a small ledge that's seemingly used as a table. Multiple drawings were spread across it, I reached out my hand moving some to the side before one catches my eye.
"I don't have time to explain! Do you have the medicine or not!"
I drown out Finns voice and continue to study the drawing, my head tilting to the side, I feel a presence slowly come up behind me.
"Dula op up like?" Talons ruff voice filled up my small bubble of silence.
(Do you like?)
I nod, " It's.....meizen" I say honestly... because it was. A beautiful sketch of me laying across Storms back while he grazed, the detail in the drawing shocked me so much I almost didn't answer him. The field, the trees, Storm... me.. the small smile on my face... a real smile, I couldn't look away.
(It's... beautiful)
" Yu look krei nou...worried." I could feel his warm breath brush across my cheek and I couldn't help the small smile that slipped onto my face at his broken English
(You look very not worried)
"Ai fig raun word bilaik lufa au ste... free. I look very free."
(I think the word your looking for is.... Free)
"Yes. Free." I turn my head slightly so I can look at his face, his ice blue eyes are scanning over the drawing with a look I could only describe as soft pride.
Is that how he sees me.
I look back at the drawing.
I look so content. Peaceful. Free.
"Meizen." Talon whispers out making me look to him, storm grey meeting ice blue.
"I'm going with you. Let's go! Talon, Embry!" Lincoln's voice broke our stare apart causing us both to look towards him.
"Wait." Finn calls picking up one of Lincoln's sketches of a Reaper, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." He whisper.
My eyes widen, "I'm not sure if this is your first good idea or last horrendously bad idea."
"How far did the Reaper chase you?" Finn questions Lincoln.
"They'd still be chasing me if I didn't lose them. Why?" He rushes out.
Finn looks at me, " I have a really bad idea."
**************
"This was the worst idea ever Finn!" I yelled out frantically running just in front of the others, the shouting behind me still loud in my ears.
" I know!"
"Keep running!" Talon shouts above the loud 'whoops' that are coming from behind us.
I scoff, "What does it look like I'm doing? Walking!"
Suddenly I hear a whistling to my left so I quickly veer right jumping over a log, a hatchet struck the tree next to me, Talon who's been behind me the whole time barely let me glance at it as he pushed me forward.
"Would you guys just shut up and run!" Lincoln yells.
The four of us stayed running together until we finally saw the light of fires, quickly moving into a small clearing by the camp we were faced with the grounders head on, who looked at us confused. The four of us shared a look as the whooping behind us got louder then quickly ran right into the bushes, leaving the grounders to face the Reapers.
"Reapers!" I hear the grounders yell out but I keep running leaving behind the sound of steel hitting steel.
I lead Talon, Lincoln and Finn to one of the foxholes near by, practically jumping in it, glad to finally be away from the Reapers. Coming out the other end I was met with a gun pointed at my face making me growl in annoyance, "What have I said about you idiots pointing guns at me!" I hiss at the boy who instantly aims his gun a different way and scurries off.
"Embry! Finn!" I heard Clarke before I saw her, quickly being pulled into a hug and then just as quick she let go and hugged Finn, "What did you's do?"
"Your boyfriend had his first good but horrendous bad idea."
Finn chuckles at me, "We kicked a hornets nest."
I shook my head, "Is that what were calling it."
"How's Raven?"
Clarke looked solum, "She's not good. The rockets aren't ready yet."
"Wheres Octavia and Bellamy?" I ask her, "Still out there," Clarke nods to beyond the wall.
"I'll by you some time." I say then quickly leave them going back through the same foxhole seeing Talon and Lincoln on the other side, "We have to find Octavia and Bellamy."
That instantly got Lincoln moving, Talon and I not far behind. It didn't take long to find the two sibling hiding behind a tree quite close to both the Reapers and the Grounders.
"Octavia!" Lincoln calls out softly to the pair, we approach and crouch down near the pair, checking them over I notice the arrow sticking out of Octavia's thigh. I quickly look around the wound then back at Octavia who's too occupied with Lincoln, taking the chance I quickly grab the arrow, yanking it out.
Octavia let's out a silent scream the looks at me, "Really?" She says through clenched teeth.
I give her a small smile, "Would you rather I warn you?" I rip a piece of fabric from my shirt, tying it around her thigh.
"No."
I chuckle pulling the fabric tight.
Bellamy looked between Talon, Lincoln and I, "Did you do this?"
Lincoln nodded, "With Finn."
Bellamy chuckled, "He finally had a good idea."
"That's what I said." I lean forward and press a hand to Octavia's head frowning, which Bellamy did not miss, "What is it? What's wrong?"
I shook my head thinking, "Lincoln, she's a little warm."
Lincoln reaches forward resting the back of his hand against her forehead, "I can help you, but you have to come with me now." Lincoln tells Octavia then looks to Bellamy, "Go. Let him help you." Bellamy tells his little sister, "No way. I have to see this through."
Bellamy shakes his head, "You can't walk and I can't get you back to the drop ship." He try's to reason with her.
"He's right. This fight is over for you." Lincoln breaks it to her simply making tears fall down her face.
Bellamy moves forward and grabs her hand, "O,O, listen to me. I told you my life ended the day you were born. The truth is, it didn't start until then. So go with him. I need you to live. Besides... I got this." Octavia lunges forward with what little energy she has left, wrapping her arms around him before pulling back, "I love you big brother." Bellamy smiles at her, "May we meet again." "May we meet again."
Bellamy helps her up into Lincoln's arms but she stops and looks at me, "Embry.."
I shake my head, "No goodbyes. I'll see you again and don't worry I'll look after this idiot." I gesture towards Bellamy making her let out a sad chuckle then she nods at me. Lincoln looks towards Talon who looks at me then back to Lincoln, a silent conversation between the two, Lincoln steps forward placing a hand on Talon shoulders then the two press their foreheads together. Then just like that Lincoln and Octavia were gone, running through the forest.
Bellamy looked devastated, " Come on Blake. We've got a war to win." Bellamy looks up at me, determination clear oh his face, "Let's go."
"To the wall!"
Finally.
"Perfect timing. Hand me your gun Bellamy." He hands it over wordlessly, both Talon and him curios about why I suddenly need a gun. We were actually in a perfect position just right of the gate. I kneel down using a fallen tree to cover me as I line up my shot, "Hey Bellamy?"
"What?"
"Remember that jar of gunpowder I was carrying?"
"Yeah?"
"It wasn't a jar of just gunpowder. You two might want to get down." As soon as they knelt down I fired. All of the grounders that were in front of the gate suddenly weren't, Pieces of them were flying all over the place.
" You were carrying around a bomb!"
"Yes. Yes I was."
"Bloody hell Mystery"
"Let's go before we get barbecued." Talon looked at me confused, "Don't ask just run."
We ran to one of the near by foxholes that led to the far side of the drop ship, popping up out of the foxhole, we quickly looked around. It was a blood bath. I look towards Talon, "You go left, I go right." He nods.
"Bellamy! Embry! Run!" Clarke's voice called out making Bellamy look away, giving a grounder an open shot, "Bellamy look out." I push Bellamy out of the way and quickly bring up my dagger to block the fatal blow, " I know you," the grounder male hisses, "Anya's spoken about you. The warrior.-"
"You talk to much!"
The grounder male growled at me, swinging his sword at me. That was the start of my battle, steel against steel, each attack he through at me I blocked and dodged. The male was starting to get frustrated with me, "Fight back!" He yelled swinging his sword over his head but I blocked with both daggers, sending a swift hard kick to his stomach he flew back, leaving him wide open to an attack. Before he could even let out a whisper I flew one of my daggers, it landing with a thud right in his chest. I quickly place it back in its stealth and swing my bow from my shoulder, noticing a grounder running directly at me I notch at arrow, pull back and release, hitting him right in the chest.
I look off to the side seeing Talon fighting one of his own but another grounder was coming up behind him. I notch an arrow, pull back, release, the arrow with a strong thud took down Talons opponent. Killing the grounder he was focused on he looks at the body with the arrow in it then over to me nodding his head before moving to find his next, seeing that he was handling himself fine I then looked to find Bellamy. It didn't take long. Bellamy was on the ground with a grounder above, axe raised, but before he could end Bellamy's life Finn came out of no where, tackling the grounder away. Finn rolling to the ground, I see him look up at Clarke and nod, looking towards Clarke and noticing the distraught look on her face I put it together.
"Oh shit," I look back to Talon, "Talon!" I see him quickly kill the grounder in front of him them look around for my frantic voice, our eyes meet, "We've got to go!" Not questioning it he runs towards me taking down a grounder in his path, "Quickly! We need to get Finn and Bellamy!" He nods grabbing my arm running in their direction, "You Bellamy. I Finn." I nod running towards Bellamy who once again is in a struggle with a grounder. The grounders hands around his throat squeezing the life out of him. I let out a war cry, tackling the grounder away from Bellamy we roll, the grounder trying to use his weight to over power me.
I don't think so.
I let out a hiss struggling to grab one of my daggers as the grounder pins my arms down, leaning back he sends a strong punch with his armoured glove to the side of my head, I know the steel from his glove cut my head instantly because red filled my vision. Determined not to die like this I let out a scream and with all my strength pushed on the grounder giving me just enough room to grab a dagger. I swiftly deliver a slash on the back of his elbow making him yell out in pain but that was all I needed. Pushing on his bloody arm it forced him to drop and roll on his back but I'm quick to roll with him, pushing my dagger into his chest repeatedly before I stand. I try to shake the blood out of my eyes, out of my vision but all I see in red, the ground feels like it's moving. A sudden hand on my shoulder makes me jump and my dagger is quickly grabbed, "Just me." I almost let out a sign of relief at the deep voice that could only belong to Talon.
"Bellamy? Finn?"
"Right here." Bellamy's exhausted voice reaches my ears, "We've got to go! Now!" Finn yells.
"I can't see." I could feel the blood dripping down my head.
I feel Talon tighten his grip on my arm, "I got you."
With that, we run.
