Chapter 29
20:15, 25 March 2023
Rainbow baby. A term for a child born to a family that has previously lost one or more children due to stillbirth, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, termination for medical reasons, or death during infancy. Jennie couldn't believe that would happen so fast and only had a one try with Taehyung when he went home drunk and had sex with her after months.
"He already researched the best psychiatrist for both of you. Why do you ever listen to him?" Her mom said as soon as she arrived at their apartment when Taehyung left, they had sex under the influence of alcohol Taehyung had.
"What? Psychiatrist? For what?" Jennie still doesn't understand what her mom talks about, so far she is already past the trauma of her first miscarriage.
"This miscarriage you had with Taehyung killed him slowly because it made both of you distant.", "No, we're not."
"Then, how come in the first month after that you never slept with Taehyung in your own bedroom? How come you never do dishes, cooking, and clean house? You isolate yourself in the nursery room, not even letting Taehyung sleep or accompany you in there." Her mom said but Jennie gets irritated with her.
"Mom, enough, you don't know–", "But I know Taehyung more than I know you." her mom sternly cut her. She became mad with her own daughter. So, she continue,
"I know Taehyung cried himself to sleep when i dropped Archie to here every night from Washington, i know he didn't eat dinner because i always prepare him a food for three days but i always caught the half of it still in the fridge, and i know he bust his ass off to save that damn law firm of yours!" Her mom started nagging her.
"Why did you plead that day instead of hearing his opinion about your departure? He already prepared everything for both of you, what's best for a married couple who's going through pain. Maybe it's not what you wanted but at least that's what you need." Her mom explained.
In court, the judge, the jury, and the family or relatives who are involved with the victim are concerned with one overriding question. How did this happen?
What was the mechanism of a criminal? How do we see past the mess and confusion of a criminal being disputed to figure out the guilt of charge to the suspect?
Every part of a case tells a different piece of the story. And until you look at each and every criminal, you can't see what went wrong.
A multiple armed NYPD police barged into Jennie's office and secured Fai right away. Other police take Ashley out and try to approach Jennie.
"A woman got shot. A woman got shot." The police said to his ear to inform the team.
'No, it can't be.'
Jennie's mind couldn't afford to take what she just witnessed. Another loss, another disappointment. What went wrong? How come her distress can be another leap to second suffering? It's like the universe does not let her or everyone around her feel happy and proud of her.
When she heard the police think she got injured from a gunshot, she denied him. "No-no, it-it's not a shot. I-i-i'm not getting a shot." Jennie said to them.
"Ma'am there's blood, the paramedics are on their way, stay with us." She knows a stressful environment in her case can lead to a stressful body that it can't bear.
"It's my-my stomach." What? Jennie got shot in the stomach?
"Let us check, ma'am." The police said they tried to help Jennie sit but she just stood there holding her stomach while bent down a little bit, holding the desk.
"No-no, i-i'm pregnant. It's the baby, I think I had a miscarriage." She stuttered. She looks to the police with confusion but suddenly her eyes become blurry, she doesn't want to believe it but she can feel she's going through with it. With another pain. And that's when it happened. The beginning of everything went wrong.
That day she fainted to see her own blood and assume the worst. But, the worst is yet to come.
Jennie has been through hell for weeks. She's not fine, not because she lost another baby, but because she disappointed her own little family. She disappointed Taehyung to not give the best of them. She can't even look at him, nor stand by his side. She is scared to sleep with him in the bedroom and suddenly the talk comes out.
She wasn't worried because Taehyung accused her but she was scared and reminded her that it's her own fault and started blaming herself. She had done enough by blaming herself two years ago when she didn't tell Yoongi she's pregnant and that led to her first miscarriage.
"Let's go to bed, okay? I kinda miss you there." Jennie felt ache when she heard it from Taehyung.
Oh, if Taehyung can read her mind how much Jennie wants to jump to him for a big hug and cry out loud. She wants to be there for him, if she can, Jennie wants to send Archie for a week to mom and let her and Taehyung have a time for themselves. Instead, she denied him.
Jennie thinks maybe if she can't do what she wanted to do, at least there's another option. If she can't be with Taehyung alone and send Archie away, maybe she has to send herself away from them for a moment. To forget. But running isn't an option to forget, it means to press pause only.
"Hello?", "Noona, where are you? Can we talk in Jin hyung's townhouse? I will send you an address. It's an emergency." Jennie was confused for a moment. She already prepared herself to at least go to work, but since Jungkook said it's an emergency , she skipped work today.
"Uh, why should I be the one who takes this?" Jennie said as she read through the files. "Because you used to work with Fai Khadra for my grandparents. You know him and maybe you can go through with his past move to continue the case, what do you say?" Jin asked her.
A murder case. One thing she never took for her entire career for ten years. She is interested in one but she is too scared to look weak in front of people, that she tends to get emotional with a sad story that leads her to not be an objective lawyer.
She looks at Jin and Jungkook and there's a lost eye in them. A loss of an unfair death to parents. Jennie knows better how it feels to lose something. She can't bear it, it's suffocating her and much worse when she lost it without even starting to live with it.
Jennie looked at the files and sighed. "Okay, I'll take it."
"Would Taehyung be fine with this?" Jennie thinks for a moment, if she tells Taehyung, he won't allow her to go. Ever. She is still in a critical stage emotionally but he never understands how this could be an opportunity to keep moving forward.
How about him? She knows he's been going through hell with her, she loves him so much that she wants to give him a space to blurt everything out from his heart. He is barely crying or frustrated, he pretends to be fine with all the chores at home he does. Maybe, alone time for Taehyung is good for him.
Jennie knows it will make Taehyung blurt everything inside his heart, but it's a part of a grieve, take everything out until it's empty. It's cruel and Jennie knows this, and that's when she knew the real criminal and a suspect are in this trial of love.
"Jen, wha-why-what's happening with you right now?" Taehyung couldn't gather a sentence because it doesn't make any sense.
"Jin and Jungkook plane crash turns out not to be an accident, they want to look at it again and present it to the court. They want me to be their lawyer." Jennie said excitedly.
Taehyung examined her facial reaction, he's confused why suddenly Jennie looks so happy with this. "Uh, Jen. why do you suddenly get excited?"
Jennie sighs and drags Taehyung to their bed to sit together. "Tae, I think being in New York is so frustrating. This whole Fai thing haunts me like crazy, maybe being away for a moment could make up my mind. Plus, I will be working again so it kinda makes me practice again to work hard since it's been a month since I took maternity leave."
"How about Archie? Are you gonna take him with you?" Taehyung arched his eyebrows.
"I just plan with mom that she will take a commute once a week to bring Archie to Washington. If it's fine with you? It's only 2-3 hours away, he's not going to be cranky because he'll be sleeping. He always sleeps if he's in the car." Jennie said.
She keeps avoiding his opinion by talking about how good this is. She wants approval, just once, this once. That's all she needs and she promises she will come back with a new loving Jennie that Taehyung can get again. But first, she needs this.
She can clearly see Taehyung is about to disapprove of this but he is hesitant because he wants her to be happy, and if this could make her happy he doesn't want to get in a way.
Jennie thought she would be happy. She will find a thrill behind those trials when she emotionally attaches to it, she's non stop. She ace every testimonies and bargaining from the opposing side.
When the trial ends at the end of week two, she immediately goes to her apartment to video call Taehyung. She really misses him so much, but apparently he's been busy. He didn't answer any of her calls and only left her a text saying he's busy.
Taehyung:I'm in a meeting, Archie is on the way to you. We talk later.
But later means never. Until, Jennie decided to annoy Taehyung with a bunch of calls.
"Hey." Taehyung greeted her with a hoarse voice. Jennie smiled and decided to change it to face timing. "Let me see you."
She waited for him to turn on his camera. Jennie could see Taehyung's sleepy face, his bare collarbone. He's not wearing a shirt when he's sleeping.
"Baby, it's noon. This is so unlike you to wake up this late." She giggles when Taehyung just hums because he still has not gathered himself to talk, he is still so sleepy.
"I don't have Archie in here so I don't have any chores to do. I was playing an online game with Yoongi all night. I just finished at four." Taehyung said.
"Wow, it sounds like you are having a good time, it seems like you live like a bachelor. Remember, Archie is on the way with mom to New York.."
"Well, I have been feeling like a bachelor these past weeks." He replied.
Jennie gritted her teeth, she knows there's a meaning behind his words. "Uhm, baby, how's Lisa doing?"
Taehyung gets up from his bed and brings his phone with him to walk to the kitchen, still showing his face and half of his topless body.
He arched his eyebrows, he could see Jennie hesitate to ask that, she must've known something from Jungkook about their fight. "What about her?"
"Uhm, you know since Jungkook's here, maybe she's going through something? Kinda like I miss him?" Jennie said still with unsure feelings.
"How about me? Don't you want to know about what I've been through?" Taehyung's voice was bitter. He gets irritated because Jennie is just so oblivious about their own relationship.
Jennie frowned when she heard him. "Why? Something's wrong with you?"
Taehyung chuckled bitterly. "I couldn't believe you." Taehyung mumbled to himself but loud enough for Jennie to hear. She froze and Taehyung realized she heard it but he doesn't care, she has to know how it feels.
"I think I should go, this house is a mess because of last night. Talk to you later." Taehyung is about to hang up on her.
"Wait, tae!" But Jennie's voice doesn't stop him from making him hang up.
Jennie isn't confused at all, she knows Taehyung is mad. She's trying to at least let him plead for her to go home, because apparently the case does not bring so much happiness or energy to her body. She realizes Taehyung's presence is all she needs but she doesn't want to disturb Jin and Jungkook with disappointment when she backs out. So, she waits and waits for Taehyung to beg her to come home, but he's not. He just let it slide with the greatest distance he gave to her.
Until, when she noticed one by one Jungkook and Jin got their problem by themselves, they left Washington to go back with their family to New York. Jin ordered her to go back and be with Taehyung only with a words coming on his mouth;
"Do you think our marriage can be saved?"
"What?" Jennie asked. She knows sooner or later that topic will come out from either of their mouths but she tries to pretend it's never been in her mind all along. She tries to deny her assumption.
"Through thick and thin, they say. But when we're on thin ice, we're like this. You being like this. You're leaving me and expect to heal me with a new you but why? Why do I have to suffer for a month just to be fine with you?" Taehyung asked her.
"Why do I have to wait for a month just to see my wife all good?"
Why? Jennie doesn't have an answer. Jennie's eyes get teary but she doesn't have anything to serve him so he could take back what he just said.
She wiped her tears. "I should go, Archie needs me, he might need you too, Taehyung." She left him confused while she started crying from the hotel to their apartment.
Truthfully, she's not thinking about the baby anymore. But, she is also not thinking about what Taehyung feels. The court of love has decided they need to get this trial to end.
"Jennie? There's a package for you." Jennie looks in the doorway and there's Ashley with a brown paper. To lawyers, it looks like they've been served from getting sued or something.
She grabbed it right away and read it. It's a divorce paper. Taehyung has already been decided. Jennie has been sentenced for domestic violence towards Taehyung, being absent through thin air, leaving Taehyung in emotional breakdown, leading to hurt himself to stay in the marriage with no support.
"Are you kidding me?" Jennie shouts when she barges into Taehyung's office and makes everyone outside snap their heads towards his office because of her loud voice.
Taehyung just stares at her blankly. "What?", "This. I never signed up for this or we will talk about this again. It's already off topic." Jennie said angrily.
"Off topic? Since when? Since you left my hotel room without any decision between us? What do you want to hold on? We're not even talking about the problems in our marriage anymore. I give you a choice." Taehyung replied.
"When?"
"When I asked you 'Do you think our marriage can be saved?' I told you what I felt, and I asked you why I had to wait. You didn't give your answer." Taehyung explained.
"Because-because. . .", "Because you know you were selfish, yet you still did it." Taehyung finished her sentence.
A disadvantage for marrying a lawyer. They already have an answer to their own question. They don't need to wait, they just want to hear from a witness/suspect's mouth that they really committed a crime.
A Domestic violence. Jennie did that.
"Taehyung." Jennie pleaded.
Taehyung stood up and stood in front of her. He looked at her teary eyes and cupped her cheek. He wiped her tears with his thumb and he looked at her again. Jennie can see it's not a pity eyes, it's a tiring eyes. He can't argue, he already got an answer to this problem.
"I can't, Jen. I don't have anything to hold on to. I need something to figure us out but we already emptied out. There's nothing for us to figure out. We don't have a sign anymore."
They've been sentenced to set them free from this marriage. Once for all. But, the bond is not bound to break.
'Positive'
Jennie looks at the stick in her master bathroom while sitting on the toilet. If Taehyung needs a sign or something they can figure out together, she has something for him now.
A Rainbow Baby.
"You just signed a divorce papers, what are you. . . what are you some kind of pregnant or something?" She asked nonchalantly.
Lisa poured the wine to the glass and heard nothing. She knows what this silence means, so she stops and turns her head to Jennie.
"What?"
Jennie has to believe that even if something seems like it cannot be fixed, it doesn't mean it's broken.
She chuckled bitterly and stared at the window blankly.
"I think I am."
Lisa blinks her eyes so many times. She didn't realize the glass she poured with wine was already full and it blurted out to Jennie's coffee table.
"Lisa! Geez! It's new!" Jennie stops her hand and cleans it with a tissue. Lisa still statues on where she sat while looking at Jennie. She is confused how Jennie can say it and act casual when in fact she's pregnant and divorce.
"Wh-wha-what? You're pregnant? When did this happen?"
"We had sex as soon as I arrived in New York. I found out this morning that I am positive." Jennie said. She walks to the kitchen and just cleans the glass and the wine bottle.
"And Taehyung is just fine with it? He's not changing his mind even though you're pregnant?" Jennie gritted her teeth and Lisa widened her eyes even more.
"You didn't tell him?!" Jennie shakes her head. "Oh god, you're a terrible person."
"Yes, and I deserve to be divorced by him.", "No! He deserves to finally get a light in this marriage, that even though you guys are going through a hard time, there's a miracle going on in your family!" Lisa explained.
Part of her words is true. Taehyung must be thrilled to know that even though they failed there's still another chance for them to fix it up.
"It's too late. I will inform him when the time is right. I will say that I don't want him to stay just for a baby and we will share this responsibility like we share it with Archie."
"Jennie, you're punishing him for keeping it a secret. You want him to also feel hurt for not knowing what's going on and finally you drop the bomb in front of him like it's too late when in fact it's not, you found out before you sign the divorce paper. Like you punish him for dropping the divorce paper out of nowhere." Lisa is true. But, Jennie isn't that cruel.
She's scared he's not loving her anymore. Main proof is the divorce paper. She thinks he already fell out of love when in fact he isn't, he just thinks the best decision for both of them is to rip the bandage as soon and as fast as they can. Before it got stuck too long and too hard to rip off. A wound that doesn't get treated is useless if it is only bandage. Let it open when it dries and it will heal naturally.
Knock Knock
"Hello, honey! Jennie is at the company's lunch party. But, she already prepared everything for Archie to go with you." Taehyung just smiled and entered his old apartment.
"That's fine, Mrs. Kim." When Taehyung said those words, Jennie's mom was taken aback for a moment. It's been a week since the divorce and it's the first time Taehyung finally call her 'Mrs. Kim' Again.
No more mom for her from Taehyung. She's a bit hurt by what he called her but does she have any choice? They're already apart and nothing needs to be kept.
"Okay, I gotta go. I need to prepare for my charity event this weekend. If you like, you can go, Taehyung." Taehyung just nods while smiling. How he misses her cooking when Jennie's not around.
Now, he's living in Greenwich with his twin brother with a take out food. Taehyung still doesn't have the energy to cook yet, and Taehyun clearly can't cook according to a burning ceiling he made last week above the stove.
He sees sleeping Archie in his crib. Taehyung wants to take him right away but he looks so peaceful. So, he waited for a bit and checked the diaper bag. He counted again and he remembered they ran out of diapers in his apartment. He can't go to the grocery store, he hates it.
Taehyung checks the storage and wardrobe in the nursery room but there's none. Jennie doesn't take the supply out yet from her bedroom. They always keep things that still can't be organized in their bedroom.
Taehyung walks to her bedroom and checks the drawer they used to keep the supply. But, he can't find any. Taehyung comes back again to the nursery room while passing by the dining table. He looked at the table for a second and suddenly stopped. He noticed something odd in the dining table.
When he turned around again to the dining table, he noticed something familiar. A piece of paper that looks like a black and white photo. He walks towards the table but when he becomes closer to the table, his eyes get wider.
It's a sonogram, there's a baby in it. No way it's Archie's sonogram because it already places in his scrapbook that Jennie and Taehyung put it together.
He grabs it right away, and his hand is trembling. No way. He checks the date in the sonogram. The date is yesterday.
"Tae? Where's mom?"
Taehyung is still a statue but he heard someone behind him speak. "Tae?" He slowly turned around while the sonogram was still in his hand.
"What's this?"
Jennie is shocked to her core, she didn't expect they should handle it right now.
