Chapter 36

01:31, 9 April 2015

Calum's POV

She was done with me. I knew it. She was getting tired of me everyday. I walked down the white hospital halls turning a couple corners to find the cafeteria. I was starving.

After a couple flights of stairs I opened a door marked cafeteria. There were tables everywhere but only a few people had came to eat here. Some were still dressed in hospital gowns.

I scanned the room until I found the odd ones in the room. Wearing all black and a red bandana were the boys hungrily devouring burgers. As I approached the table I blinked away the stinging sensation in my eyes hoping no one would notice me.

"Hey Cal, we got you a burger."

Michael held up a wrapped burger with the words "Big Mac". Printed across the yellow paper.

"Thanks."

I quietly said and started unraveling the wrapper.

"You okay there?"

Luke questioned snapping me out of my thoughts causing me to look up at him.

"Hm?"

I finished chewing and swallowed before he could say anything else.

"Uh, yeah I'm fine."

Luke raised a curious eyebrow at me.

"It's just- I'm not- I'm just surprised right now."

I mentally face palmed myself basically giving every part of my brain away. I took a big bite of the half finished burger stuffing my mouth so I wouldn't be able to speak again.

"Uh..do you wanna talk about it?"

Luke said awkwardly. He was unaware of my conversation with Misty so I didn't blame him for trying. I shook my head quickly and finished my burger right then and there.

"It's nothing. Really."

I gave a fake smile and crumpled the wrapper stuffing it into it's original bag.

"Cal."

Ash said cautiously.

"We have less than 2 days here and I refuse to leave this place without us all being happy."

"But I-"

"No you aren't."

Ashton said cutting me off. I sat there quietly twiddling my thumbs under the table.

"You aren't happy and something is going on."

He sighed and rubbed his temples.

"What did you two talk about after we left."

Wow.

I felt absolutely shitty and vulnerable. I shrugged and took a deep breath.

"Nothing just kinda discussed on what would happen to us after I left."

I looked away uncomfortably and itched the back of my neck. It was a nervous habit I couldn't break even if I tried.

"And?"

Mikey chirped in after taking a long swig of his drink.

"She doesn't believe in me- us."

I blinked to keep away the stupid tears that were coming.

Calum stop being fucking dramatic.

I keep telling myself but she's changed me. Both physically and mentally.

Misty.

Singlehandedly.

"So?"

Luke furrowed his eyebrows in confusion.

"She said she wants me to end it now...or else she will."

"End what?"

Mikey said jokingly.

"Owww! That hurts."

"Shut up and be quiet."

Ashton said slapping the back of his neck making him quiet. I rolled my eyes in annoyance at the two.

"So what should I do?"

"Should I end-"

"No!"

Luke said interrupting me.

"Stop cutting me off."

I began to get annoyed.

"You can't end it. She's obviously on something because I know she loves you, Cal. She's probably scared of this or something."

Scared.

•••

"What are you scared of?"

I asked her wanting her to know that we'll be okay.

"Misty, tell me."

"I'm scared that you'll forget me once you go on tour tomorrow. I'm scared you'll find someone new. i'm scared that you won't love me like you do now."

•••

A flashback ran through my head bringing back memories.

Memories of the promises that I made. Memories of the morning I left in the airport. Memories of her crying and the plane door closing. Memories of skyping every night. Memories of facetiming each other during our daily lives. Memories of the night I ended things between us.

Memories of me breaking.

Memories of just me.

"Hey, you do what makes you two happy okay? As long as you two are still close is all that matters to us."

Ashton said referring to them. I nodded and stood up ready to go.

"Im gonna go home to start packing."

I stated taking the bag we used for trash with me.

"Yeah that's a good idea."

Mikey said standing with me as well.

"We should say bye to Misty first."

"Yeah."

Both Ash and Luke said in unison. They all got up and followed me to the nearest trash can.

"I'll meet you guys up there in a few minutes okay?"

I urged them on. Luke eyed me suspiciously as Ash and Mikey went down the white halls to the staircase leading up to her room.

I turned to walk in the other direction towards the exit until a firm hand held me still.

"Where do you think you're going?"

Luke's familiar voice said questionably.

"I-uh was going to get my water from my car."

I made up a lame excuse so I could go home.

"Here you can have mine."

I felt a cold plastic bottle in my hand.

"You know how I don't like germs."

It wasn't a bad lie. It was true but I wasn't a complete germaphobe.

"Bullshit."

Luke muttered rolling his eyes at me.

"You can't just run away from you're problems Calum."

He took my arm and pulled me in the direction I had came from.

"Luke."

I whined and he pulled me up many flights of stairs.

"Thank me later."

He said sternly as he opened Misty's door and pushed me in. I saw Misty and the boys laughing before they spotted me and became quiet.

"Ok well we'll visit tomorrow before we leave, promise."

Ashton said giving her a kiss on her forehead.

"Bye, M. Feel better."

Mikey leaned over and kissed her cheek. They both gave a final wave before walking out the door leaving Luke, Misty and I alone. She took an awkward breath and turned her gaze to the rumpled blanket covering her frail body.

"Hi Luke."

She said in a small voice. she smiled at him and completely ignored my presence.

"Calum."

She added onto her greeting.

"Well I was just stopping by before I leave also. So I hope you feel better, M! See you tomorrow before we leave!"

I was about I turn to leave with Luke but he stopped me and slammed the door in my face.

"Calum?"

I froze and my heart was racing. Why the fuck was it racing? It's just Misty.

"Can I ask you a question?"

I slowly turned around still not making eye contact with her. I took the chair that was still next to her bed and scoot it closer to her.

"Yeah I guess."

She took a deep shaky breath and fixed her gaze up at the ceiling. I couldn't help but to feel massive Déjà Vu. It's like we Rewinded back to that moment during our high school lives.

"Would you- Do you see a future in us?"

Our future. I thought about this topic a lot. Like what I was going to do in 20 years. Who will I be with. Where I'll be living for the rest of my life.

I guess I never wondered what it would be like to have Misty in my life.

Forever.

"Calum?"

Her voice became higher. Showing signs of her being close to tears. I could tell she was holding everything in.

"Well yeah. Of course."

I started. I adjusted my chair and took my hands from my pockets and held her's.

"But it might not matter anymore if you don't want to be with me anymore."

She turned her face and gave a sad smile.

"Cal, I do. I really want to be with you."

Her voice cracked in between the sentences.

"I love you so much you would never know."

She sighed and took her hand to place it under her blanket.

"I just don't want to go through the long distance again."

She furrowed her eyebrows as her thinking face.

"Don't get me wrong, I would love to stay together throughout the tour but how would we know if anyone of us is lying to each other? How do I know if your not cheating?"

"That's true. But that's why we have trust. You can't spell trust without us."

She giggled softly. Man, am I going to miss making her smile and hearing her laugh. It was a beautiful sound. I smiled for the first time in days.

"You're such a loser."

"Your loser."

I added in making her laugh harder.

"I'm going to miss you, you know?"

She whispered silently.

"Me too."

I hung my head low.

"So what are we going to do?"

She became serious again. All signs of happiness disappeared in a snap.

"I don't know."

I said honestly.

"Calum, if we were meant to be together then one day we'll meet again like we did. And at that moment we'll know that we're right for each other."

She gave a sad smile and bit her lip. Tears fell down her cheeks as she couldn't contain her pain any longer. I wiped away the tears and held her face in my hands.

"So this is it?"

I asked her wiping more tears as it fell from her eyes.

"I guess."

She said quietly. Her voice raspy and cracked.

"Okay."

I felt my own tears spill but I didn't care. I didn't care if I cried in front of the girl I was madly in love with. I pulled our lips together savoring what might possibly be our last kiss.

We broke apart to breath again. Opening my eyes I saw her beautiful smile.

"I guess I'll see you tomorrow morning then."

My hands dropped from her face and finding their way back into the pocket of my jeans.

"Okay."

I stood up pushing the chair back to where it originally belonged and started to walk to the door.

"Calum?"

Her small voice spoke again.

"Yeah?"

I stopped and turned back around hoping that she changed her mind. Hoping that she would say that she wanted to be with me.

"Can you promise me something?"

I nodded slowly.

"Promise me that you'll never forget me."

She sniffed back tears and smiled again.

"Misty, I swear I'll never forget you. You gave me everything I could've asked for. I love you because of that."

"Thank you."

She nodded slowly and bit her lip sinking back into her bed so she could sleep again. I couldn't take it anymore. I took long strides back to her bed and kissed her again, this time I made sure it was passionate. I made sure she wouldn't forget this moment.

I broke away and headed out the door without another word.
