Chapter 4

22:07, 31 March 2023

Your ___ colored eyes widened. He had figured so much out without your help, and he had done so much.... yet he had still made time to watch 'The Exorcist' and stay by your side. "

"What did the letter say and what was in the package?" you asked.

He placed his stack of tarot cards on the floor and flipped the top card before setting it aside. Near did this with two more cards before looking up at you.

"The letter was meant to be read specifically by L. As a summary, it said that L works way too slow and that more deaths than necessary are

taking place due to him. The letter also said that this had happened before, during

the Kira case," he told you and twirled a white strand

of hair as he studied the tarot cards.

Matsuda frowned and slowly sat down in the seat that Near had vacated only moments before.

"So this person is holding a grudge against L," he said thoughtfully. You carefully sat up with a wince, you held out a hand when Matsuda

went to help you with a shake of your head.

"So far nine people have been killed within a couple weeks: Joker Jail, Apple August, Rocket Rider, Pilot Pajama, Dee Dairy, Dixie Disney, Heaven Harbor, Vikke Valentine, and

Karma Kiss. Were any of the missing organs from the victims in the package that you received?" you asked and ran a hand through your messy hair. Near shook his head and

crawled over to your bed, he reached under it and held up a black notebook that read 'Death Note'. Your eyes widened and you reached a shaky hand towards it.

"I thought that the Death Notes were burned?" you asked and dropped your hand to your side, not wanting to touch it. Near turned his attention back to you and he picked up one of the papers off of the bed and held it out to you. Carefully you took the

paper and blinked your ___ colored eyes.

"In the 1888 Jack the Ripper case, Robert Anderson asked police surgeon Thomas Bond to give his opinion on the extent of the murderer's surgical skill and knowledge. The opinion offered by Bond on the character of the 'Whitechapel murderer' is the earliest

surviving offender profile. Bond's assessment was based on his own examination of the most extensively mutilated victim and the post mortem notes from the four previous

canonical murders.

He wrote: All five murders no doubt were committed by the same hand. In the first four the throats appear to have been cut from left to right, in the last case owing to the extensive mutilation it is impossible to say in what direction the fatal cut was made, but arterial blood was found on the wall in splashes close to where the woman's head must have been lying.

All the circumstances surrounding the murders lead me to form the opinion that the women must have been lying down when murdered and in every case the throat was first cut. Bond was strongly opposed to the idea that the murderer possessed any kind of scientific or anatomical knowledge, or even 'the technical knowledge of a butcher or horse

slaughterer'. In this case, the surgeon I had examine the bodies believes that the person indeed possesses scientific and anatomical

knowledge that a doctor would possess," Near said and motioned to the paper.

The paper he had handed over to you was the report that the surgeon had sent to the SPJ after examining all the bodies. Near remained silent

as you continued to read on the report and he moved back over to his stack of tarot cards. Gently he placed all the cards into a pile and shuffled them, the frowned when one of the

cards fell out of his hands while he was shuffling. Near reached over and picked up the card that read 'Death' and he studied the picture on the specific card.

Each deck of tarot cards have their own designs but for his 'Death' card, there was a picture of a skeleton

with an arrow, a skeleton wearing a hood, multiple bodies and in the background there was a skeleton hanging from a tree. Slowly he

set the card back in his deck.

"So how many people on our suspect list would have enough experience to perform these kinds of murders?" you asked and looked up from the sheet of paper. Near started counting on his fingers then held out three fingers to you, he pointed at each finger as he said the name of the suspect. You set the sheet of paper down and scanned over the other sheets of paper that were sprawled across your bed.

"You said you are 60% sure who the killer is Near... Nate.. do we have enough evidence to prove that this person is guilty and arrest them?"

you asked and watched him look away from you. Near shook his head and stared out the window of your hospital room.

"Not yet, almost... I have to go back to the office, do you need anything?" Near said suddenly and walked over to you. He scooped up all his

paper work and slid them into a small suitcase that made him and his white pajamas look even odder. You shook your head and grabbed onto his sleeve, causing his grey eyes to widen briefly.

"Near, are you... L?" you asked and watched surprise flash in his

grey eyes, though it quickly vanished. A small smirk crossed Near's face and he looked up towards the ceiling.

"You are very smart ____, maybe a bit too smart," he said then turned

and left the room. Moments later, Matsuda returned and sat by your side, making a conversation and try to get your mind off the case so you could relax. You found yourself

tuning Matsuda out, he is a nice guy and all, but sometimes he could be just too nice.

You had gotten out of the hospital a couple days ago and you were glad to get away from the smells of the hospital. You shoved

your hands into your pockets and cursed the cold weather under your breath as snow lightly drifted down towards the earth and fell into your hair. You glanced up at the sky and

chuckled. 'Hm, white just like Near,' you thought and held out a hand to catch some of the snow. You shook your head, still finding it hard to believe that Near is L and that you had been working right beside L the whole time.

Lightly you shook the wet snow out of your hand and glanced up towards the darkening sky. Near hadn't called you in while, you were wondering if he was avoiding you now that

you knew his secret. This brought a frown to your face and you quickened your pace back towards your apartment as you took a sip of

coffee.

"Um, excuse me?" someone called and looked behind you, you saw someone but you figured they weren't talking to you. Your phone rang in your pocket and you grinned

seeing that it was one of the numbers that Near had given you, you flipped the phone open and pressed it to your ear.

"Hello?" you said into the phone and smiled at the sound of Near's

voice. You glanced back at the person as they called you again and you held up a finger then

pointed at your phone.

"___, Jack the Ripper is..," Near stared to say. You turned around when once again the person called you and

you gasped as the person smiled and grabbed your neck. The phone slipped from your fingers as you grabbed the person's hands

and tried to pry their fingers away from your neck so that you could breath. The phone clattered to the ground and your attacker

stepped onto the remains of your phone.

"Y-Yagami..." you sputtered as air refused to enter your lungs and black spotted your vision. 'Darn it! I'm sorry... Near... Nate... L,' you thought to yourself as all energy left your

limbs and the world spun around you before going black.

—-

"___? ___?!" Near asked, actually raising his voice a bit rather than using his usual monotone one. He flinched when he heard a crash on the other end then blinked when the

call was ended.

"Halle, Stephen, Anthony, we have to go! Stephen ready the van, Halle call

the police for back-up, and Anthony lets go," he snapped and closed his phone before standing. Near ran out to the van with Anthony and climbed into the passenger seat, quickly

buckling up as Anthony climbed in beside him. He glanced back at Halle as she climbed in, talking on the phone as she did so and Stephen set down a couple suit cases.

"Go," Near instructed Anthony and twirled a strand of hair. The albino looked down at his phone when it buzzed to let him know he had a text.

'Meet me at the abandoned warehouse L, the one where you stopped Kira all too late; you know where it is... Jack the Ripper.' Near

tightened his hold on the phone, causing his pale skin going even lighter due to his grip.

"Anthony, make a U-Turn, we are going to the old warehouse where Kira was captured," he said and glanced out the window, for once the

emotion he felt was obvious in his eyes: fear. Stephen leaned forward from the back seat and looked at Near.

"Nate, don't worry, we will

stop Jack the Ripper and save ___ ___. That's our job," he said and eyed the boy. Near didn't respond, he simply moved farther away from

Stephen and closer to the window, rolling a dice around in his hands. 'All too late...' Near thought to himself and he sighed softly.

"Nate, perhaps you should wait here. All signs point to the fact that Jack the Ripper has a grudge against you, I think you should stay in the van," Stephen said as he loaded a gun. Halle nodded in agreement and tucked her gun into her jacket as she climbed out of the car with Anthony. Halle slammed her door shut and walked around the van then frowned

to see that Near had climbed out of the car too.

"I'm going and that's final," the boy said and tossed his dice onto the ground. None of the SPJ members dared to argue with him though

it was obvious that they were upset with him. Near walked up to the warehouse that he had been in not too long ago when he defeated

Kira.

"Light Yagami, L, Kira, it's over, you've lost the game." Near took a deep breath and walked over to the warehouse with the other members walking right alongside him.

Memories from that day continued to float through his mind. Light's eyes narrowed at Near and the SPK

members. Near slowly turned his face up to look at Light, a mask of L's face firmly in place. Everyone was silent and all that was heard was the rain hitting the roof and a huge fan slowly turning. The Japanese police

all looked at each other in confusion.

"Am I the only one who sees something wrong here? He can go around accusing people of being Kira,

but the fact that he is wearing a mask says he is only trying to protect himself, not anyone else," One cop shouted...

"It's only a precaution; there is a good chance that Kira has seen the faces of everyone in this warehouse except me. In fact, he might be writing down your names as we speak, so I'd like to wait for one hour. No, make it thirty

minutes, that should give us more than enough time to see if anyone is being controlled before they die," the albino said...

Matsuda frowned. "Near, it's been over thirty minutes and nothing has happened yet," the cop shouted. Light merely glanced at him.

"Of course not, that's because Kira is not here with us," Light said. Near glanced around then nodded his head.

"Very well, everyone seems to be safe, I'll remove my mask now," the

white haired boy said and slowly pulled the L mask off...

"He'll be here soon, it's only a matter of time," Near continued patiently. "There's only one entrance to this building and the only way to

look inside is by opening that door. That means he'll either walk through that door or at the very least open it and peek inside," the white haired boy explained. He nodded.

"And just who is this person anyway?" Matsuda asked, confused and outraged...

He reached out a pale hand and pulled open the door that Mikami had entered the warehouse through and he turned his grey eyes to Jack the Ripper.

"Yagami Sayu or should I say Dr. Yagami?" he said calmly and

the woman that stood in the warehouse pushed her black hood off of her head so that her face could be seen. Halle frowned as all of

them stepped into the warehouse. Stephen had his gun pointed in Sayu's direction in case she decided to pull off any stunts, Anthony stood beside Near with a frown as he

handed Near the dice he had been playing with in the car, and Halle slowly pulled out her own gun. Sayu twirled around her bloody butcher knife around and smirked.

"I was 60% sure it was you Sayu Yagami," Near said and carefully squatted down while twirling a

strand of his hair. The albino centered himself and managed to get control of his emotions so that he had a blank face on once again. The smirk vanished from Sayu Yagami's face and she glared at him, waving her butcher knife at him threateningly.

"This is all your fault L! If it wasn't for you I would still have my father, brother, and mother! If you had solved the Kira case faster and didn't take your damn sweet time, I'd still have a family! Now, because of you my father was killed by Light and my mother died of depression... because of you I was captured by that freak

Mello who wouldn't have hesitated to kill me and who left me scarred, making my mother have to take care of me... if you had worked faster

Light would be in jail and not dead... THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!" she screamed at the albino detective. Sayu's long dark brown hair flowed just to her knees in a knotty, jumbled

mess and her brown eyes flashed

dangerously.

"YOU TOOK MY FAMILY BECAUSE YOU ARE AN INCAPABLE DETECTIVE,

YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE NUMBER ONE DETECTIVE AND ALL YOU HAVE DONE IS CAUSE MORE DEATHS THAN NECESSARY!"

she continued and took a step forward. Stephen placed a finger against the trigger of his gun.

"Near, she is unstable," he informed the boy and glanced down at the

young boy. Near took the dice in his hand and lightly flicked it so that it rolled along the floor, when it landed, the number one faced up.

"So this is revenge," Near stated and stopped twirling a strand of his white hair. Halle stepped forward and narrowed her eyes at the murderer that stood before them.

"Where is ____ ____?" she asked and also kept her gun pointed at the

Yagami girl. Sayu grinned a horrific and terrifying grin as she held up the butcher knife then licked some of the blood off it.

"Too late L, I guess you should've worked faster," she said and burst out laughing, almost as evilly as Kira had. Near looked up from the dice.

"Halle, Stephen," Near said and the two ran at Sayu after Anthony shot the butcher knife so that it flew out of Sayu's hand. Jack the Ripper's

eyes widened with shock and she screeched.

"NO! I haven't finished yet! I have to kill ___! I have to kill ___ in front of L! I refuse to lose!" she yelled and flailed about wildly in Halle and Stephen's arms, clawing at them with her nails and kicking with all her might as tears streamed down her face. Near glanced at Anthony who rushed over to Sayu Yagami and placed handcuffs on her wrists.

"Sayu Yagami, you are under arrest for the murder of Joker Jail, Apple August, Rocket Rider, Pilot Pajama,

Dee Dairy, Dixie Disney, Heaven Harbor, Vikke Valentine, and Karma Kiss. You have the right to remain silent," Anthony informed the girl as

sirens could be heard approaching the warehouse.

"Let me go!" Sayu yelled one last

time and she spat on Near when she was dragged past him. Near wiped Sayu Yagami's spit from his face and stood upright before running to the

back of the warehouse. He yanked the back door open and his eyes widened to see you tied to a chair and a gag in your mouth.

"___," he said in relief and happiness shown in his grey eyes. The albino ran over to you and pulled a pocket knife out of his pocket before cutting the ropes. You yanked the gag out of

your mouth and pulled Near into a tight embrace.

"Y-you came for me Nate," you sputtered and buried your face in his white pajamas. Near blinked, not sure how to handle the situation with you crying and holding him tightly. He wasn't accustomed to being

touched as you were doing now and he wasn't sure how to comfort you. Very slowly, Near wrapped his arms around you and rested his chin on your head.

"Why wouldn't I come?" he asked, shock in his voice. You wiped at your

eyes and looked up at him, your ___ colored eyes meeting his.

"You had told me when we first began the case that I was just a piece of the puzzle... your game with Jack the Ripper," you answered and bit your bottom lip. Near glanced away from your eyes for a moment

then he twirled a strand of your hair.

"I'm sorry, at first I had meant that, but I was...scared when I lost you during the phone call," he replied, a light shade of pink spread across

his cheeks. He wasn't used to talking about the emotions he usually hides.'He really does care' you thought to yourself and a small smile crossed your face.

"Thank you for coming to get me... and for staying with me at the hospital, I never did really thank you for that. Did you catch Sayu?" you said as you stared into his grey eyes that showed so many emotions. Lightly Near tangled his fingers into your hair and he placed a soft kiss

on your lips. He quickly pulled away out of your hold and he headed towards the exit.

"I'm glad you are okay ___, come on, it's time to go. As a reward for solving the case, I want to go buy more toys," he said and a natural smile graced his lips rather than his devious smirks. You nodded and stood, still a bit shaken from the whole situation. Somehow, though you thought it would have been impossible, you smiled also.

You walked over to him and grabbed his hand as the two of you walked out of the room. Near once again blushed but he didn't pull his hand out of your hold, he didn't like

people touching him... but if it was you, he didn't mind.

—-

Near placed a newspaper onto the coffee table in front of you and he slid it over. The two of you sat in the coffee shop where the whole case had began, where you first met

Near and the other members of the SPJ. It felt great to be there and just relax and hang out with Near, knowing that Jack the Ripper had

been caught. Once you picked up the

newspaper, he began to stack his new dominos on top of each other. You glanced over the article on the Ripper Case, noticing that the article didn't mention who solved the case but did explain everything. It would make sense that Near.. Nate River.. L would want to keep his identity a secret along with his team, even your name wasn't in the article.

"So I guess this means you won the game huh?" you asked and set the newspaper back down onto the table, being careful not to knock down his dominos. Near nodded and placed

another domino on his stack.

"You won't be able to work with me because the SPJ has been dispatched since the case is solved,"

Near said and twirled a strand of his hair. You bit your bottom lip lightly and picked up one of his dominos before setting it on the stack Near was currently working on.

"Will I be able to see you again Nate?" you asked and grabbed one of his hands that was holding adomino. His grey eyes met yours and he

nodded.

"I won't be accepting any more cases

for a while unless I feel the need to do so. The others always handle the paperwork for me so I will have time to spend with you," he said

and he looked down out of embarrassment. Near hadn't come out and told you that he had a crush on you... you thought maybe he just

didn't understand the feeling yet, but you hoped that you could become even closer to Near.

"I'm glad," you told him and placed a

kiss on one of his pink cheeks before

squeezing his hand. Near squeezed your hand back and with his free one, he carefully knocked down the dominos he had set up.

'Check mate... game over,' he thought.

A couple weeks later, Sayu Yagami died mysteriously of a heart attack in her prison cell. Written in her own blood on the wall read

'This is not over L.'
