Jax was mere inches away from Pomni's face, and she desperately ignored the every fiber of her being telling her to close the gap between them.

"Um... yeah... what is it?" Pomni barely even heard herself speak, her heart hammering in her ears.

She finally noticed the blush on Jax's face, her hands in his, and realized what was about to happen about a second late.

Jax leaned forward and kissed her, his shaking hands wrapped around her back.

They stood there for what felt like only seconds until Jax pulled away.

"Wow. We just did that." Pomni muttered, her face hot.

Jax didn't respond, just stared at her with cute, wide eyes.

She reached up and cupped a hand on his cheek (get your mind out of the gutter, yeah, you, you know who you are), leaning forward again and kissing him, this one longer and more passionate.

She pulled away, panting slightly, giving Jax a small grin.

"Um... Pomni..." Jax started, his eyes still wide. "Can I... um... stay? In your room? Tonight?"

Pomni went red again. "Y-you mean..."

Jax gave her a blank, confused stare for a moment before jumping slightly. "No! We can't do that here! I mean... just... like... cuddling?" He trailed off, the last part barely audible.

Pomni paused before slowly nodding. "Yeah... I think so."

They gazed at each other, both with faces full of lovestruck awe. Jax finally stood up and helped her up, grabbing her hand and not letting go as they walked out of Pomni's room and down the hall.

Zooble and Gangle were talking in the main space, but so far, they were the only other ones up.

Zooble looked up at them, and their eyes immediately darted to their intertwined hands. Pomni blushed and pulled her hand back quickly, Jax raising an eyebrow until he followed her gaze to find both Gangle and Zooble staring at them.

Pomni walked to the couches quickly and Jax crossed his arms, sitting on the couch next to her.

Gangle looked up at Zooble, holding in a laugh, before turning back to her sketchbook and pointing things out quietly.

She whispered something to them, they nodded, and they stood up together and walked back towards the rooms.

"Remember to wear protection, you two!" Jax called after them, smirking.

"You too!" Zooble yelled back.

Jax's face flushed and he turned away.

"So... Caine probably doesn't have an adventure for us..." Pomni said quietly, turning to him. "Do you think we're allowed to go outside?"

Jax smiled. "I think so. Either way, we're going."

Pomni grabbed his hand, to which Jax somehow went even redder, and practically dragged him outside towards the lake.

They sat down and stared at the water, not moving. "So... are we, like... dating?" Pomni asked.

Jax finally turned to her, smiling. "If you want."

She nodded lightly and turned back to the water.

They stayed in silence for a while until a scream came from the tent.

They looked at each other and ran inside to find Zooble running away from something, carrying Gangle with them.

The two turned to find a large black monster covered with colorful eyes running down the hall.

An abstracted character.

Pomni shuddered and grabbed Jax's hand, a tear rolling down her cheek.

"Is... is that..."

She was the only one who they hadn't seen all morning.

"Ragatha..." Pomni whispered.

Jax grabbed her shoulder, pulling her close, and they watched as Caine appeared, snapped his fingers, and the thing disappeared into a void in the floor, never to be seen again.

(That night)

Pomni and Jax walked silently back to Pomni's room, Pomni gripping his hand as she stared ahead.

They went inside quietly, and Jax closed the door, picked her up, and carried her to the bed, her leaning her head against his shoulder.

He sighed, holding her as she began to cry.

"I just can't believe... I mean... how?" She sputtered between sobs.

"I know the feeling. It'll get better, I promise." He said quietly, wiping away her tears.

She looked him in the eyes. "What's the point?"

He stared at her for a moment. "The point of...?"

"Of staying strong here, I mean. What do we have to live for? We're trapped. We're never getting back out."

He sighed again. "Well... we have each other. You could ask what the point of living in the real world is just as easily." He smiled. "You know, you asked me if I thought we were still human. Honestly? I think as long as we don't let these cartoon bodies define us, then yeah. We're still just as human."

She paused. "Yeah... yeah, I guess so..." She cried softly, burying her face in his shoulder. "I just can't believe she's gone..."

Jax hugged her again. "I know, me neither. I'll help you get through this. I promise."

And for the rest of that night, with each room filled with quiet pain, he never left her alone.
