𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍

𝐓he weather was nice.

birds flew overhead, dipping between branches as soft rays of sunlight filtered through the leaves. team 7 moved silently along the forest trail, surrounding their client, tazuna, as they continued their escort mission to the land of waves.

𝐒𝐀𝐊𝐔𝐑𝐀 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐔𝐍𝐎 walked beside 𝐒𝐀𝐒𝐔𝐊𝐄 𝐔𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐇𝐀, stealing small glances at him. while, 𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐈𝐊𝐎 𝐊𝐎𝐂𝐇𝐎 was on the opposite side of the path, walking calmly next to 𝐓𝐀𝐙𝐔𝐍𝐀. her flowing haori swayed like wings behind her with every step—white fading to lavender at the hem, and silver butterflies stitched along the hems catching the sunlight in gentle glimmers.

on the other hand, 𝐊𝐀𝐊𝐀𝐒𝐇𝐈 𝐇𝐀𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐄 walked quietly in the middle between sasuke and ameiko. ahead of them, 𝐍𝐀𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐎 𝐔𝐙𝐔𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐈 took the lead, eyes alert but still filled with the careless energy of youth.

they'd been quiet for a while, the only sound being birdsong and the crunch of shoes on dirt. eventually, sakura spoke, curiosity slipping into her voice. "say, mr. tazuna-san?"

the old man grunted. "what is it?"

sakura continued, "your country is ‘the land of the waves’, right?"

tazuna didn’t even look back. "what of it?"

sakura blinked, thrown off by his tone, then turned toward kakashi instead. "say, kakashi-sensei..."

he glanced down at her with a raised brow.

         "are there any ninjas there?"

kakashi answered plainly, "no, there aren’t ninjas in the land of the waves. but in other nations, while cultures and customs are different, hidden villages exist and that’s where shinobi live."

his tone shifted slightly, his words turning into a brief explanation, his voice drifting like a lesson through the woods. he spoke of the five great shinobi nations and their leaders—the hokage, mizukage, kazekage, raikage, and tsuchikage. each name held weight, the kind passed down by generations.

sakura gasped, her eyes wide. "no kidding... lord hokage is that incredible?!" but her inner voice wasn’t convinced. arms crossed and a pout on her face, inner sakura frowned. ‘is that boring old man really that amazing? that can’t be true!’

naruto, meanwhile, had his arms crossed too, a frown forming. a memory flashed in his head— the hokage blushing and getting knocked over by his sexy jutsu. ‘no way! there’s no way that guy’s that strong!’

kakashi stopped walking and turned his head slightly, a sharp glint in his eye. "hey."

naruto and sakura both jolted.

kakashi turned toward them, his lone eye sharp. “you guys just doubted lord hokage now, didn’t you?”

"n-no!" they cried in unison, shaking their heads quickly.

sasuke stayed still, unreadable. while ameiko, she didn’t flinch—didn’t speak. her face was soft, composed. a quiet elegance wrapped around her like silk as usual. even under the filtered forest light, she almost looked ethereal like something the mist would hesitate to touch.

kakashi walked up and lightly patted ameiko’s head. she didn’t even blink, just kept that same gentle smile. his eyes looked at the team, "don’t worry, you guys. there are no ninja battles in c-rank missions."

sakura lit up. "then there’s no danger of getting into a scrape with foreign ninjas!"

sasuke perked up to this, who looked a little disappointed somehow.

tazuna, however, broke into a cold sweat and didn’t say anything.

on the other hand, ameiko—standing beside him— tilted her head slightly. her soft eyes narrowed at his suspicious reaction but said nothing else and keep smiling while her eyes look at the trees.

𝐓hey walked in silence again, but kakashi’s eye narrowed when they reached a patch of disturbed earth—a puddle that hadn't dried in the warm weather. it was suspicious.

and ameiko, still calm on the surface, had subtly shifted. she didn’t look alarmed, didn’t draw attention but her posture shifted. beneath the elegant drift of her haori, her fingers hovered closer to the sheath of her blade.

then—

a ripple.

a masked shinobi erupted from the puddle, water swirling around him like a serpent's coil. at the same time, a second attacker lunged from behind.

both masked, wild-eyed, chained together by razor wires wrapped around their arms.

everything happened in a flash.

“ambush!” kakashi shouted, eyes widened at the sudden appearance of the enemy.

one of the men flew three kunai straight toward tazuna, who stood frozen. all team 7 went on alert immediately and before any of them can move—

ameiko stepped forward in a blur of lavender and steel.

her sword unsheathed with a whisper of silk, and her body turned in a sweeping arc. graceful as falling petals, precise as a blade through paper. her haori rippled like butterfly wings as she spun, catching each kunai with impossible accuracy.

TING!TING!TING!

the kunai clattered harmlessly to the dirt, deflected by the razor-thin edge of her sword.

she landed gently in front of tazuna, the wind catching the sleeves of her white-to-lavender haori so they fluttered around her like silken wings. her feet barely disturbed the earth, as if gravity itself gave her favor.

tazuna stared, stunned.

despite her delicate build and soft demeanor, ameiko radiated a quiet, unshakable strength.

“stay close and alert” she murmured to tazuna, voice calm as a quiet stream, her eyes never leaving the enemy—her smile never flattering.

for the first time in days, tazuna felt safe.

on the other hand, naruto was left speechless, clearly impressed with his teammate, ameiko, and felt a silent flutter in his chest—unknown to him. sakura, on the other hand, silently beamed at ameiko, bright eyes sparkling like she was watching a star perform. her heart swelled—not just with admiration, but something warmer. something she hadn’t quite named yet.

while, sasuke narrowed his eyes— not in irritation, but focus. his gaze flicked to the exact spot where each kunai had landed, trying to track it in his mind. ‘how many steps ahead was she already…?’

she was more than graceful. she was precise.dangerous.

his mouth twitched downward for half a second then upward, faintly.

a subtle smirk.impressed.

meanwhile, kakashi noted every detail. her footwork, the angle of her blade, the spacing of her stance. even the slight way her haori had masked the movement of her arms. her moves wasn't just elegant—it was dangerous in its quietness.

but the enemy took this opportunity to chained kakashi.

everyone gasped.

“the first one!” one of the enemies shouted, tightening the chains around kakashi.

CRACK!

a horrible sound tore through the mist.

kakashi’s body exploded in a spray of blood and flesh—organs splattering, the fog and smoke concealing the worst of image of it.

sakura shrieked in horror. sasuke’s fists clenched.and ameiko eyes sharpened, but her smile remains unflattering.

meanwhile, "ka-kakashi-sensei!!" naruto's voice broke the forest's breathless silence, cracking with fear. but his body immediately froze as the blur of an enemy shinobi appeared behind him, claws gleaming, fangs bared.

too fast.

now, the enemy was behind naruto—silent, swift, and deadly. chains slithered out like metallic vipers, glinting cold under the fractured sunlight that filtered through the canopy above. their links hissed against the air, coiling for the strike.

“the second one...” one of the enemy growled, voice low and rough like gravel. both eyes gleamed with malicious intent, locked onto naruto's unguarded form.

naruto turned just a fraction too late.

clink—!

one of the sharpened claws reached out, grazing the back of his hand. a thin red line bloomed instantly to his backhand, the sting sharp and hot.

“ack!” naruto winced as his body came in contact with the ground, startled by both the pain and how close the next strike loomed.

but before their chain could close around him.

a streak of lavender. a flicker of raven black.

ameiko and sasuke moved as one.

ameiko's fingers curled around a fallen kunai — the very one the enemy had launched earlier. her eyes, soft violet and laced with quiet clarity, narrowed with surgical focus. with a twist of her wrist, she sent the blade soaring. it whistled through the air, aimed not at a person but at the chain's midpoint, right where it latched to the tree anchoring both ends.

an instant behind her, sasuke drew his own shuriken. he traced her motion with eerie precision, he launched his weapon to the exact spot her kunai had struck.

CLANG. SNAP.

the impact sent a shock through the chain. sparks erupted. both enemies snarled in surprise as the link binding their arms locked tight, immobilizing them.

one of them grunted, struggling. ‘it won't... come off!’

sasuke landed with a predatory grin. he smirked soundly as he surged forward and, in one fluid motion, jumped high, twisted in the air, and kicked both their faces at once while still gripping their arms. the two enemies reeled back, snarling, blood spraying from their lips.

but they weren't done.

as sasuke was still mid-air, the chain shattered—whether by raw strength or a desperate jutsu, it snapped in a harsh metallic scream.

both enemy charged toward tazuna.

the attackers lunged at tazuna, claws bared. sakura, eyes wide, stepped in front of the old man, kunai trembling in her grasp. but before she had to use it—

sasuke and ameiko blurred past her.

both placed themselves between them and the incoming blow. sasuke's arms outstretched, his expression cold, determined. his and the enemy's eyes met in a moment of hostility. on the other hand, beside sasuke— ameiko raised her arm, and with a delicate flick of her wrist, brought the flat of her thin, needle-like sword onto the air—preparing for a blow towards the other enemy.

but neither struck.

because suddenly—

a hand clasped both enemy's throat.

kakashi appeared behind the enemy, arm looping around the man’s neck in a flawless headlock. the enemy stiffened, struggling. it was already over. then "yo," he greeted casually, like he was saying hello at a street vendor's stall.

sakura gasped, eyes gleaming. "kakashi-sensei! he's alive!"

sasuke straightened from his protective stance, glancing over his shoulder with a low scoff. ‘hmp. show off’ he thought dryly.

naruto stared at the scene, still breathing heavily. his eyes dropped to the bloodied remains of where kakashi had seemingly been torn apart earlier. but instead of limbs—only broken logs and stray branches remained.

‘so sensei used... a substitution jutsu...’ his mind clicked into place.

before he could think further, kakashi stepped toward him. “naruto…” his tone was unusually soft. “sorry i didn’t get to you faster. i got you hurt.”

naruto blinked, startled by the apology. but kakashi’s voice shifted again—light but laced with disappointment. “i didn’t think you’d be incapable of moving.”

naruto looked away, guilt bubbling in his chest.

tazuna, silent until now, let out a breath of relief. ‘i was saved... somehow...’ he turned slightly to glance at ameiko—at her pale, elegant profile, the way her lavender-tipped haori caught the light. ‘this girl... she's stronger than she looks.’

kakashi then approached the rest, dragging both unconscious attackers beside him, limbs limp and faces slack from the expertly blow. his single visible eye, framed by silver hair and the edge of his mask, shifted between his students.

he stopped just a few paces away from ameiko and sasuke, taking in the still-hovering tension in the air—the scent of scorched earth, disturbed leaves, and adrenaline thick around them.

“great teamwork.” kakashi said, his voice lower than usual, sincere beneath the usual aloofness. sasuke said nothing while ameiko—as usual— just smiled at him, thankful.

kakashi's gaze lingered a little longer than necessary on ameiko.

she stood quietly, sword still in hand, its thin edge catching flecks of light that filtered through the forest. the slight wind played with her haori, fluttering it around her like petals refusing to fall.

her expression was composed as ever, but her eyes—those deep purple eyes—held the faintest shimmer of something softer. thoughtful. warm.

he blinked, then went to sakura and tazuna not too far.

meanwhile, sasuke turned his head toward her, almost involuntarily. his dark eyes caught hers.

ameiko met his gaze. calm. unreadable. then she tilted her head slightly, a gentle smile rising on her lips like the moon emerging through fog.

it lingered there,ethereal and elegant.

sasuke blinked. he hadn’t realized how long he had been looking at her until a strange flutter coiled low in his chest. he quickly glanced away.

both then looked at kakashi who complimented sakura as well. “you too, sakura.” kakashi added, nodding.

then he turned his attention to tazuna. his gaze sharpened. “we’ll need to have a talk later, tazuna-san.”

tazuna sweatdropped but said nothing.

naruto, meanwhile, remained seated on the ground, his eyes fixed on the cut on his backhand—shame sinking in. he hadn’t been able to do anything.

then ameiko approached and naruto mind went blank immediately.

she knelt down with quiet grace, her long lashes casting shadows over her eyes as she leaned in to examine his wound. her touch was light, careful. “it's coated,” she said gently. “poison.”

she took a handkerchief from her sleeve and tied it tightly above the cut. naruto winced softly.

“to stop the poison from spreading,” she added calmly. then she reached into her pouch for supplies and began cleaning the wound, her fingers steady.

naruto’s heart pounded—not from the pain, but from the way she moved. like she wasn’t even aware of how graceful she was. like the breeze followed her on purpose.

he swallowed, feeling worse by the second. it fueled even more when sasuke called him, smugly—smirking at him.

“are you hurt, scaredy-cat?”

“what’d you say!?” naruto exploded, almost getting to his feet.

        “naruto!” kakashi barked.

naruto froze mid-motion.

“don’t move. ameiko is treating you.”

he glanced down. ameiko hadn’t even flinched—still smiling, her eyes gentle.

“i’ll need to open the wound to draw the poison out,” she said softly. “it’ll hurt a little. but you're brave, right?”

naruto stared at her. guilt twisted in his stomach again.

before she could reach for her kunai, naruto snatched one of his own, then stood—and drove it into the wound himself.

         “naruto!” sakura shouted in horror.

everyone froze.

ameiko stood slowly, her smile deepening. not out of mockery—but something warmer. deeper.

“what are you doing!?” sakura demanded.

naruto grinned through the pain. “i’ll protect the old man. no matter what.” he held up the bloodied kunai. “with this knife… i swear.”

kakashi shook his head lightly, amused. “it’s great you want to rid yourself of poisoned blood, but keep that up and you’ll bleed to death.”

         “e-eh!?” naruto panicked.

ameiko stepped closer, taking his hand in both of hers. “let me.” she whispered.

naruto’s face turned crimson.

she looked at him gently, her tone light, yet something in her expression lingered—quiet praise, unspoken reassurance. she cleaned the wound quickly, eyebrows raising slightly in surprise at how fast it started to close.

but she said nothing—only bandaged it with careful hands.

when she finished, naruto jumped up, practically glowing. “thank you, ameiko-san!!”

he lunged forward in excitement—but before he could hug her—

WHACK!

sakura knocked her fist into his head. glaring at him so bad, “what were you thinking, you dumbass!? are you a masochist or something!?”

“owww!” naruto pouted, rubbing his head. “sakura-chan?!” and pouted.

in a minute, both enemies were tied securely to a thick tree trunk. their limbs were limp, bound with reinforced ninja rope. the clearing had quieted now, though tension still crackled in the air like static clinging to everyone’s skin.

one of the captured shinobi stirred, groaning, then lifted his head. his wild eyes darted around and froze as he saw kakashi crouching calmly in front of him—arms crossed, lone visible eye sharp.

kakashi's tone was casual, but cool. “chūnin from the village hidden in the mist,” he murmured. “these guys are known for continuing to fight... no matter what the sacrifice.”

the shinobi scowled through the mask. “how were you able to detect our movement…?”

kakashi stood slowly, brushing invisible dust from his pants. “there shouldn’t be fresh water on top of dried mud,” he said simply, “not on a clear day like this. it hasn’t rained in days.”

tazuna’s face paled slightly, his brows furrowing as he gave kakashi a sharp glance. “then why…” he muttered under his breath, “…why’d you let the kids fight?”

kakashi’s single eye slid to him, expression unreadable. “if I felt like it, i could’ve taken them out immediately.” his tone dropped a fraction—subtle, but unmistakably heavier. “but i needed to know something first…” his gaze pinned tazuna like a kunai to a wall. “who were these enemies after?”

tazuna stiffened, swallowing thickly. “w-what are you talking about?”

before kakashi could respond, ameiko stepped in. her voice was soft—soothing, almost musical—but carried clarity that cut through the tension like a blade through silk. “at the beginning of the ambush… they threw kunai directly at tazuna-san,” she began gently, then continued with the same softness, “then, when their chain broke… they didn’t flee. they went after him again. both times, he was the only target.”

her violet eyes glanced toward the tree where the kunai were still lodged, then returned to kakashi. “it’s deliberate. they’re after him.”

team 7 fell quiet, every head turning to ameiko.

sakura blinked, awe surfacing in her eyes.

naruto looked stunned. ‘…she noticed all that?’

sasuke’s gaze narrowed thoughtfully. approving. ‘sharp as ever…’

kakashi smiled behind his mask, the smallest curl at the edge of his eye. “good point, butterfly girl. as expected. you’re right.”

ameiko gave a faint nod, graceful as ever.

kakashi turned back to tazuna, his voice losing all trace of its usual relaxed lilt. “we didn’t receive any notice about you being targeted by enemy shinobi. your request was logged as protection from bandits, thieves—petty crime. that’s c-rank work.”

he paused. let the weight of his next words land. “this, however… this is at least a b-rank mission. possibly higher.”

tazuna said nothing—guilt now blooming across his weathered face.

kakashi continued, cool and factual. “if we’d known ninja were after you, the mission would’ve been priced differently. assigned differently. we’re not here to take on rogue shinobi ambushes under false pretenses.”

sakura’s face twisted in alarm. “sensei… we shouldn’t keep going! this is too dangerous. it’s too soon for us!”

kakashi said nothing at first, only hummed—quiet, contemplative. even he wasn’t sure yet.

then—

“i’m not turning back!” naruto shouted suddenly, fists clenched. “i already gave my word—i swore i’d protect tazuna-san! i don’t care if it’s b-rank or z-rank, i’m finishing this!”

kakashi raised a brow, amused. “z-rank’s not a thing.”

naruto flushed. “whatever! i still mean it!”

sasuke gave a small, scoffing sound but his smirk returned. “tch. not bad for the scaredy-cat.” he said, almost amused.

naruto glared at him, “what did you say, teme?!” but sasuke just scoffed and looked at kakashi, “i’ll agree to this, dobe. it's too late to go back now anyways.”

then, soft footsteps approached.

ameiko moved to stand beside tazuna,—serene, unwavering. her haori fluttered with the light breeze, the silver butterflies stitched along its hem catching glints of light.

her voice was steady, warm. “tazuna-san may have lied,” she said softly, “but perhaps… he had no other choice. if it were something important enough to risk this… then i want to help.”

sakura hesitated, torn. “but… it’s dangerous… it’s—” she then looked at ameiko—at her calmness, her certainty—and something shifted. sakura’s fists clenched at her sides. “i… i want to help too,” she said quietly.

kakashi watched them all. a long pause.

“…you’re all a bunch of troublesome kids.” he muttered, but his tone was almost fond. he then sighed. “alright. we’ll continue the mission.”

naruto exploded into the air, pumping both fists up with a loud cheer. “yeahhh! dattebayo!!”

sakura groaned and rolled her eyes at naruto. while sasuke didn't say anything but his sensei’s decision pleased him.

ameiko only smiled, faint and beautiful, like sunlight behind clouded glass.

they turned and began walking once more—tazuna trailing behind them, silent. he couldn’t bring himself to say anything yet. but his eyes drifted to ameiko beside him again… then to the rest of the team, still young and burning with resolve.

‘these kids… they didn’t have to protect me,’ he thought. ‘but they chose to.’

as they left the clearing behind, the two captured mist shinobi slumped against the tree—bound and unmoving.

and in the forest beyond, the mist thickened.

watching.

waiting.

the real mission had only just begun.

【𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐎𝐁𝐈’𝐒 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐒】

୨୧ — kakashi had momentarily delayed his intervention, captivated by ameiko’s movements—graceful, strategic, and precise. only after confirming the enemy’s target did he reengage.

୨୧— sasuke was unsettled by how naturally he and ameiko had synced mid-battle. though unsure why, he found he didn’t dislike it.

୨୧ —naruto and sakura were taken aback by ameiko’s calm, skilled medical response. and more than that, impressed.

୨୧— tazuna is silently the most thankful to ameiko. she wasn’t just graceful—she was powerful. in his eyes, she surpassed expectation.

୨୧ — both enemy shinobi, though defeated, felt a grudging respect. being bested by mere children—especially ameiko and sasuke—was a shock they hadn’t anticipated.
