43. I Saw It Happen

TW: suicide - Newts story

Sitting on the edge of the building, legs dangling over the side, the afternoon sun slowly coming to a set, Newt didn't bother turning round only lifting his head slightly, as Thomas came to stand by the blonde, who just fully turned his head to the brunette.

"Sorry about that. Back there." Newt apologise once again. "I guess I can't hide this anymore." he said pulling up his sleeve and removing a bandage off his arm to reveal a small open scratch, black and purple vines covering the skin around it.

"Are you okay?" Gally asked Athena.

"I'm fine." she assured, starting to walk the same way Thomas and Newt went, "I'm gonna make sure neither pushed each other off the roof." she said as she walked out.

"I guess I can't hide this anymore." She heard Newt say through a broken window causing her to stop and listen from a distance.

"Why didn't you tell me. Or Athena does she even know?" Thomas asked crouching beside Newt.

"Didn't think it would make any difference." he said bluntly. "All I know is that WCKD must have put me in that maze for a reason. Maybe it was literally just so they could tell the difference between immunes like you and people like me."

"We can still fix this Newt. Okay, we can."

Taking in a deep breath "Did I ever tell you about the time when I broke my leg?" Newt asked. "Way back in the maze. I just came up from the box just like all the other guys, didn't know where I was, didn't know who I was. Even though all my memories were gone I could still feel that something was missing."

"A few months later I was made keeper of the runners, Athena came up through the box, but I barely spoke to her. So I still had that same feeling. I felt empty. And i- I just couldn't hack that."

"Couldn't take it. So one day when like any other we ran into the maze, but I went and I found the tallest wall I could. I climbed up there and I jumped off it."

"Of course, I got completely tangled up in all the ivy." He chuckled slightly, "Snapped my leg in three different places, like a proper shank. And I landed hard on the floor. And I thought that was it."

"And then Athena found me. How I don't know, she was still a Med-Jack at the time, but she found me and dragged me all the way back to the Glade. And to this day I haven't told anyone the truth. Not even Athena. She's a smart girl, probably figured it out when she saw me, probably even knows about my bloody arm but was too kind to push it on me. But she saved me and gave me a second chance, that I wouldn't take back for the world."

"And now we need to get Minho back, becau- because I can't leave her without at least one of us. So if there is even the slightest chance that we can save him, get him out of there then we have to take that. No matter what the cost." he said holding her ring connected to her chain in his hand.

"Okay. I hear you." Thomas said taking it all in. "Just come back in when you are ready." he said, patting Newt's shoulder and standing up, and walking back inside.

As he walked through the corridor he was suddenly pulled into a room, the door closed behind him. Seeing the person he turned round to see Athena at the door handle. "Now I'm going to tell you something and you're gonna do it, you understand me. Or i will chop your little girlfriend in two." Athena said slowly walking towards Thomas.

"What do you want?" Thomas asked.

"When we go get Minho, you are going to listen to me when you need to, okay, you're not the main part of my own little plan but you're still gonna be there. So you need to toughen up and get Teresa here now. Got it." Athena said threateningly.

"Fine." Thomas answered.

"Good." Athena said as she reached for the door handle Thomas spoke up again.

"Did you know?" he asked "Did you know about his arm?"

"I knew the moment he got it." she said, not turning to look at him.

"And his leg?"

"I saw it happen." and with that she walked out the room, and into the bathroom, throwing her head into the toilet letting out her stomach into it.

As the sky started to turn orange Alby waited as the runners returned from their day run. "Hey, Minho." he greeted the runner. "Ben, Micheal."

"Hey, is Newt in the map room?" Minho asked, starting to walk towards the woods.

"No, he hasn't come back yet." Alby replied slightly confused.

Minho stopped in his tracks and turned to face the first in command, "He should be back by now." Ben said looking at Minho.

"Yeah, he has the shortest route today, should have been back about an hour ago." Minho expressed slightly panicked at their loss of keeper.

Seeing commotion in the middle of the Glade: Jeff, Clint and Athena walked out of the Med-Jack hut and towards the crowd. "Just let us go look for him!" Minho pleaded Alby.

"We can't 50 minutes till the doors close isn't enough time." Alby tried to reason.

"What's going on?" Jeff asked Winston.

"Newt's not back from the maze." He answered.

The group continued to argue, having a sudden urge to take over her body and mind, Athena ran into the woods and into the Map Room.

Opening the door she looked around the room, and found a sheet of paper on the table as she picked it up, she saw a list of names with a number next to it.

Finding what the numbers mean on another sheet from a different box, Athena worked out and memorized the route instantly like a second nature.

As she ran out of the woods and up to the doors unnoticed, she glanced over at the group seeing Gally and Minho breaking out into a fist fight. Before she took a step in she saw Frypan, a boy she doesn't talk to often notice her at the maze doors, seeing the knife in her hand and her eagerness he nodded his head and turned to help break up the fight.

Taking that as a sign she ran into the maze and didn't look back.

Going through all the twists and turns of the maze Athena looked at the watch she grabbed from the Map Room on her wrist seeing she had 35 minutes.

Carrying on running she got an unknown though in her head to look up, as she did she saw Newt. A boy she hadn't really spoken to since she came up from the box. Before she could call out his name, she saw him step off the ledge and fall towards the ground, her sight of the incident blocked by a wall in front of her.

After being frozen with shock for a few moments, she quickly regained herself and ran towards him taking hopefully the correct turns.

Turning a corner she looked to see a knocked out Newt on the ground, covered in ivy, and one of his legs broken in three places, Athena slightly gagging at it.

Running over to him she quickly checked his pulse and his breaths, before pulling out the same knife she got when she came out of the box. And started to cut the ivy off him.

She then cut the sleeves off her top and wrapped them around Newt's leg, to not worsen the damage. "Tonterías." she said, as she checked her watch to see she had 15 minutes to get back. Almost impossible.

Determined not to give up. Athena threw Newt's limp body onto her back and started to run/jog her way back to the Glade taking the correct turns.

Minho anxiously paced in the middle of the Glade, Frypan, Winston, Jeff, Alby and Gally stood with him. But Gally at the opposite end. Hearing a groan from the entrance, they turned to see a struggling Athena with Newt on her back coming through the doors. With 3 minutes to spare.

All rushing over, Athena carefully put Newt down and let Jeff and Clint deal with the leg. Seeing his bestfriend safe, Minho stood up from crouching beside Newt and turned to see a sweaty Athena standing away from the crowd.

As he walked up to her he engulfed her in a bone crushing hug. "Thank you." he said looking at her, to which she sheepishly nodded. Frypan coming up to her and fist bumping her.

"What happened?" Alby asked, walking over to her Minho and Fry.

"I don't know." she lied "I just followed his route and found him on the floor covered in ivy. He might have been climbing to get a better look around?" she said, the other seeming to believe her.

"So what's it gonna be?" Gally asked as the keepers stood up at the front, others sat behind them, Athena sat in a chair in the middle of the council room.

"She shouldn't get anything. She saved Newt." Winston argued.

"Don't you think she should get something, she ran into the maze when even the runners were told not to. She broke a rule. She needs to be punished." Gally said as if it was obvious.

"So what if she ran into the damn maze. May as well make her a runner, she ran his route that should take 30 minutes and back she did it in 15. And again Newt's alive that's the bigger thing here." Minho started filling in as keeper.

"He's right. Athena from now on you're a runner." Alby said, looking at the girl. "But due to breaking the rules you will get punished. One night in the pit no food." he said with a sympathetic smile towards the girl.

Gally groaned. "Like Minho and Winston have said Gally," Alby said, looking at the boy "Newt's alive. that 's the priority here."

"Hey! Athena!" Someone shouted as the girl came back from running and walking towards the woods. She turned her head to see Newt walking up to her with crutches made by the builders.

"Um, hey Newt." Athena said fully turning round and putting a stand piece of hair behind her ear.

"I just wanted to say thank you." he said "Um- I was wondering if you knew what happened, I really can't remember much." he lied, seeing through the lies Athena did what any sane person would.

"I don't know. I just found you on the floor covered in ivy and a broken leg." she lied back, because even if Newt wasn't lying she wouldn't want to tell any one that and cause them to break down.

Nodding his head, "If you would like to, I would be happy if you gave me a bit of company at the bonfire for the new Greenie?" he asked nervously "You don't have to, but I would just like to get to know you better."

"I would love to." she said with a smile.

Feeling the tears stream down her face, Athena sat on the floor against the bathroom wall beside the toilet, just finishing vomiting for a second time.

She couldn't lose him.

She has so much to tell him.

So much the two needed to do in life.

Get married.

Start a family.

Live their lives.

She couldn't let him go so soon.

She wasn't going to let him.

At Least not without a fight.

She needed him. He was different from the rest. They had both always been different.
