Ch 34

"Why..." I heard a faint whisper. 

"Why did you kill me..." 

I grunted and looked around for the source of the voice. 

"Why didn't you save me..." 

I crossed my arms around my body and just sat down. This was so mentally draining. 

"Why do you not care..." 

I closed my eyes, trying to relax and wake up. 

"What is life-" 

"Frail," I interrupted. 

"Easy to destroy," I looked behind me at the mangled body of the girl I killed. 

"Easy to break, but..." 

"So hard to make," she finished. 

I looked at her sadly, standing up and slowly walking towards her. 

"Yes, I did kill you," I took slow, short steps in her direction. 

"Yes, I was the one who caused you pain," she stood still, yet it was obvious she was scared. 

"But..." I stopped right in front of her, "I had to." 

Her fearful gaze turned angered in a moment. 

"Why! Why did you kill me!" As she continued to scream her disfigured body began to melt, making a terrifying scene. 

"WHY!!" 

I stayed silent for a minute, her heavy breath on my face. Her blood red eyes staring into mine. 

"I killed you, because I want to live," I raised my hand to her face. 

"I want to survive," I leaned in and put my head on hers. 

"You were just an innocent victim who was at the wrong place, at the wrong time." 

Her breathing stilled, "it's not your fault." 

She shook her head, "it's your fault," her voice cracked. 

"Yes," I agreed with her statement. 

"You killed me and my family," I grabbed her hand and held it tightly. 

"Yes, blame everything on me." She held my hand even tighter than me, hurting my hand. 

But I let her. 

"I didn't deserve that..." she let out a sob, tears going down her face and on to mine. 

"No one deserves this, we are just in a cruel world." 

She cried louder, leaning on me as she lost her anger. I held her in a hug, patting her back in a comforting manner. 

"We were too good for this world, so they got rid of us," I looked her in the eyes. 

"In your next life, I hope you find happiness," she looked at me with tear filled eyes, and smiled. 

It was a small smile, but one regardless. 

"And I hope you find happiness in this life," she was there one moment, smiling at me. 

And the next, she was gone.

I woke up, feeling strangely calm. 

Everything was the same as it was, but it felt different. I did my regular routine and everything was the same. After a full day of doing the same thing I've been doing for 2 months, I go back to my room. 

They let us off at midnight and wake us up at 8. I'd say that they're being humane, and are giving us a good night of sleep. 

But that's a lie. 

With the drug that they make us take at night, it gives us a few extra hours of torture. Some don't even sleep at night just so they don't have nightmares. 

I walked in my room and closed the door. Sitting on my bed, I touched the twin katana I had taken from the old man. 

They were beautiful. 

A curved, single-edged steel blade with a squared black guard. It looked old as well, but in prime condition. 

After I killed the girl, Pink left to check on the others. This of course wasn't just sealing from a village, it was a test. 

Like I thought, it was just too random. It was to weed out those who were too soft. 

She said she wouldn't have killed us like she threatened before, but I knew better than to believe that. My life was on the line last night, and I had kissed death. 

Of the 300 who were here yesterday, only around 50 were left. A 6th of the people from before had killed someone. 

Not a good thing, seeing as the village we were at was very small. 

I need to find someone to train me how to use these katanas. 

I went to sleep again and for once, had a dreamless sleep. When I woke up, I was confused. Maybe the drug wasn't working, maybe I found a way to make it stop. 

I don't know. But I'm not asking questions. 

When I went out of my room and stood at attention, I saw that Pink was here again. I narrowed my eyes, why was she here? 

"Hello everyone," she smiled kindly. 

"We are now here to see if you deserve to go up in rank, or go down." I rolled my eyes, as did others who were in the same boat as me. 

"Now, we will each have a little chat with you to figure out what you want to do, then the real fun will begin." I sighed, there was no information in that sentence. All we know is that things are going to change. 

We each line up and wait for our turn to have a little 'chat' with Pink. 

"Next," I heard Pink, I walked inside the dark room and sat down. Pink was opposite of me, smiling kindly like usual. 

"Hitori, was it?" I crossed my arms and sighed. 

"Yep," I said, popping the P. 

She frowned a little, to which I narrowed my eyes. 

"Let's cut the crap please, tell me what you're going to say so I can leave," I wasn't in the mood to deal with her. 

Honestly I have a grudge. 

She hummed before shaking her head, "we need to fix that attitude if you're going to survive here." 

I smile disparagingly, "I can put up with the act, just not when we're alone." She sneered at me "oh really." 

I rolled my eyes before clapping my hands, "let's get on with this now." 

She sighed "first, how old are you?" I hummed "close to 12." 

She chuckled "a small child huh." I frowned but let that slide, it was true. 

"So young, pity you couldn't have a childhood," at that I glared at her. 

"We aren't here to insult people, there's one adult in this room, and I'm beginning to think that it's not you." 

She stood up from her seat when I uttered those words. She reached over and grabbed the collar of my shirt, holding me up in the air. 

"Now that's too far," she snapped. I grabbed her arm and twisted my grip, giving her skin a burn. She winced in pain but didn't drop me, I rolled my eyes in a mocking manner even though she was choking me. 

"I could be worse," I managed to choke out. 

She tightened her grip before letting me go, making me fall on the ground. I coughed a few times before I calmly got up and sat back down. 

"So, are we-" 

"Yes," she interrupted, also sitting down. 

"Let's make this quick, I don't want to see your face." 

This is exactly what I said at the beginning, sheesh. 

"We are going to give you someone to help with your training, is there a weapon you want to use?" I put my hand over my month and appeared to be thinking. 

But I was actually hiding the smirk that I couldn't hold back. 

A perfect opportunity. 

"Dual wielding katanas," I answered. She rolled her eyes and nodded. 

"Perfect, now get out." 

She didn't need to say anything, I was already out the door. I walked past everyone and went to the field to train again, this is getting better and better. I quietly laughed in victory as I started doing laps.
