Ch 33

My new parents...

Did I love them? Yes, of course I did.

Did I ever forget my old one?

No, I could never.

But my new ones, they were like a second family.

I really did want to save them. But, they didn't survive the Uchiha massacre.

I saw my mom's dead body, and even took her eyes.

I knew I was going to have nightmares about it, but I didn't know I was going to have to do this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Sweetie..." A haunting voice said, "...Why did you take my eyes?"

It was my old home.

My old room.

And I was alone, or so I thought.

"...Why did you take my eyes?"

The voice was behind me, but I couldn't turn around. I didn't have the heart to turn around.

"Why..."

It got closer.

"Why...!"

I tensed up.

"Why!"

She grabbed my shoulders and turned me around. I looked into what was supposed to be my mother's eyes.

But was hollowed pools of blood instead.

"Why!!"

I jumped at the sight, tears going down my face.

My body started to shake.

My throat felt dry. It hurts.

I wanted to say something, but I couldn't.

"WHY!!"

I woke up with a start. Jumping from my bed in panic and shivering from fear.

I stood still, trying to calm down.

Quietly crying in my dark room.

I hugged myself, hoping the self comfort would help with the shaking.

It didn't.

I sat on my bed, the warmth I felt before gone. I laid down, hoping to get some more sleep. Hoping to not have another nightmare.

================================================================================

I woke up again from the sound of a bell.

I sighed in frustration. Another day, another night.

It's been the same for 2 months. I go outside and stand at attention, most of the others doing the same.

Except one person, two doors down the opposite of me.

They didn't come out.

Isahai of course noticed and barged into their room.

"Get up!!" He screamed, we couldn't see anything that happened. But we knew when Isahai went silent.

They were dead.

See, there are very few ways to die here. But the most common is when the drug gets too violent.

Yes, the drug.

The nightmare inducing drug.

The drug they forced us to take.

The drug that gives me nightmares every night.

That drug could kill us.

And that drug just got another victim.

Some people came and carried the body out of the room as we all waited for everything to settle. When it did, we continued like nothing ever happened. Like that person never existed.

That could be any of us.

That could be me.

The uppers give us this drug to make us stronger, and to cut out all those weaker. They can't see our dreams of course, but they can see the toll it takes on people.

I wake up in the middle of the night a lot.

Another person has insomnia, I could tell by the dark circles around his eyes.

Another is jumpy, and frantic.

Every person has their own problems.

There is a way to make the nightmares go away, but it's very hard to do. Isahai said if you are able to get rid of it, you could go to the next level.

But Isahai says a lot of things, so I took it with a grain of salt.

We do the work out again, and the hand to hand combat again.

It's a non-stop cycle.

But, when I woke up the next day, things seemed different.

There was this girl, dressed in pink at the end of the hallway. She looked 30 and 15 years old at the same time. She was short, maybe my height. We were all staring at her in silence, while she smirked in response.

She walked down the hall, looking at each and every one of us. After a while she smiled kindly, a smile that I'm sure everyone got the shivers from.

"Greetings, call me Pink. One of your uppers," I rolled my eyes as some people's eyes widened in shock.

"We are going on a little trip."

Here's the rundown.

We are going to this little village half a day away from us and stealing.

Yes, stealing.

We are to steal everything we think is valuable. I groaned as I got ready, I didn't sign up for this.

Actually, I didn't sign up at all.

Of course she said if we tried to escape she would hurt us and if we try again we are dead.

Normal stuff.

We run for half a day and when we arrive, it's night.

Around 12 am, so some might still be up.

But knowing people, many are still up.

This is a call out!

Anyway, Pink tells us to go into a house and take stuff. And if someone saw us, deal with it. I frowned when she said that.

Deal with it?

Did she seriously say what I thought she did?

I looked away in annoyance and did as I was told. I quietly entered a house through a window and looked through everything. There were many books and it smelled like tea. Someone old lived here, I could tell.

I saw that there was a bit of jewelry, so I took it. I scowled in displeasure, I'm not a thief. I slowly opened the door to see if there was anything in the next room. But an old lady sleeping was the only thing valuable in the room.

I slowly closed the door.

"Shela?"

Just before it was completely closed a little girl's voice came from behind me.

I freezed.

This isn't like me? I would have sensed her. I turned around to the 5 year old who soon realized that I wasn't who she thought I was.

"You're not Shela" the little girl crossed her arms in a nervous manner.

"My grandpa is a shinobi, leave" I sighed and shook my head. Bending down to her level I put my hand on her shoulder.

"Kid, you need to go into your room and pretend like you never saw anything." The little girl shook her head, "no, you can't take from us." She started talking louder and I looked around to make sure like no one was looking.

"Kid, look me in the eyes" she did as I said.

I activated my sharingan and put her to sleep. I put her in her room and continued on to the next house.

And the next one.

And the next.

Other than the first house, I was fine.

Until, I saw that this old man was sitting on his couch. He was awake, and he knew I was here.

"Come out," I did as he said. I kneeled in front of him.

"What are you here for?" I see he has two katanas with him. But those ones are shorter than normal.

"I'm stealing," I answered. He glared at me and pointed his katana at me, "I won't let you do that." I sighed and activated my sharingan to put him to sleep.

But he didn't, instead his eyes widened in shock.

"U-Uchiha clan?!" I immediately got on my feet and covered his mouth. He was too loud, and would blow my cover.

"Shhh," I narrowed my eyes, my sharingan burning into his fearful eyes.

He took out his katana and aimed to cut me, but I used my foot so he couldn't even unsheathe it.

"Why won't you go to sleep?" I frowned but then felt a presence.

I deactivated my sharingan and turned to the person coming.

"Hitori, was it?" I turned to Pink as she came in. I nodded my head, not enjoying her presence at all.

"What is taking you so long?" I looked at the old man and then back to her.

She got the idea.

"Guess we have to deal with it, huh?" I was curious to see how she will deal with it, will she knock him out?

Will she erase his memories?

Who knows.

But I'm pretty sure she won't kill him, it would be too dangerous.

"Kill him," I snapped my head in her direction.

"Excuse me?"

Did she really say that?

But it is risky business.

"Kill him," she repeated. I narrowed my eyes and shook my head. She in turn, also narrowed her eyes "why not?" I tilted my head in frustration, "too dangerous."

She smirked and shook her head, "yes it is, but that's what I like."

I grunted in annoyance, it was my fault I thought she would have humanity.

She's a sociopath.

"Still no," I wasn't going to do it.

"Let me rephrase it," she  walked over to me and grabbed my chin, making me look at her straight on.

"It's you, or them."

I frowned, "I know my worth, you would lose more than you gain." She chuckled menacingly "let me tell you a secret."

She leaned down to my height and whispered in my ear "I don't care. If I want to, I can just kill you."

She smiled kindly "You. Don't. Matter."

I grunted and stood up, keeping silent. She could be bluffing, but how would I know?

Sharingan...

I noticed she had a piece of fabric on her hip.

"Pink, could I please have the cloth on your hip," she's the type to like grovelling and pleading, so this should maybe work.

Though I could have said it nicer, but I didn't want to stoop so low.

She looked confused, "why?" I smiled kindly, like she's been doing "because it will help me." She huffed in annoyance but gave me the scarf. I immediately wrapped it around my eyes and activated my sharingan.

I could see through the scarf and felt more secure with everything.

"So Pink, were you serious about saying it's me or them?"

She smirked, "I was."

I frowned, she was telling the truth. "Why, you'll probably kill him anyway. Do you really want to kill me too?" She shrugged, "I don't get to make the rules."

She leaned closer to me "but I get to break them. And I got one, I don't let people who don't follow instructions live."

I narrowed my eyes and looked at the terrified old man who heard everything.

Sorry...

I got a kunai and raised it to his throat.

But I hesitated.

And that hesitation was enough for the old guy to push me away and run for the door.

I let him.

But Pink was quick on her toes. She threw a kunai, and it stabbed his leg. He fell down with a big thud. His face contorted in pain and before he even let out a scream, Pink covered his mouth.

"Nighty night" she sang before slowly cutting his throat. The old man tried to cover his bleeding throat but Pink pinned him down. He bled out in the next minute, struggling until his eyes clouded over.

Then there was silence.

A deafening silence.

Pink turned to me, hands covered in blood and sadistic smile shining in the dark night.

A gasp was heard.

We both snapped our heads in the direction of a young girl. No older than 15 who looked at us in horror.

I immediately went and covered her mouth so she wouldn't scream.

She grabbed my arm, her nails scratching my arm in an attempt to free herself. I groaned in pain and looked at Pink in a plea.

She could be useful.

She's young.

She 'has' a future.

Pink stood up from her spot on top of the old man and narrowed her eyes at me.

She 'had' a future.

Her eyes were unforgiving. And again, told me my choices.

Kill or be killed.

I felt my eyes glaze over at the thought of me actually doing it. But Pink's glare only made it more of a reality.

I deactivated my sharingan and held a kunai to the young girl's neck.

I couldn't see now.

Pink stomped her way over and snatched the scarf from my eyes.

No easy way out. She wanted me to see this.

I looked the young girl in the eyes. She was pleading for her life. She kept looking at me, Pink and then the old man.

Her grandfather.

She didn't want to end up like him. But it wasn't her decision.

Neither was it mine.

I stabbed her neck quickly. Making sure it hit the artery so she would die quicker. I saw her life quickly end. But for me, it was so slow.

I lied.

I lied when I said it wasn't my choice.

It was.

I did had a choice.

But it was a hard choice.

A despicable choice.

I had to kill, I would die if I didn't.

It was her or me, and I chose myself.

I looked down at my hands, the blood on my hands.

It was like hers.

Like Pink's.

I had killed an innocent woman.

But...

As I look at both dead bodies, I realized something.

I...

I didn't feel as bad as I thought I would.
