11. 'Til the End of the Line
22:18, 2 April 2019Agent Hill led Steve, Sam and Jessie to the security room of S.H.I.E.L.D. They used a device that would mess up the sound on earpieces. They used it on the men in the security room. One opened the door the four were behind and put his hands up when he saw that Maria, Sam, and Jessie had their guns trained on him. He moved out of the way when Steve walked forward.
"Attention all S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents," Jessie spoke into the microphone after they took control of them in the security room. "This is Sergeant Jessica Evans. You've heard a lot about Steve Rogers and I over the last few days. Some of you were even ordered to hunt us down. But I think it's time you know the truth. S.H.I.E.L.D. is not what we thought it was. It's been taken over by Hydra. Alexander Pierce is their leader. The Strike and Insight crew are Hydra as well. I don't know how many more, but I know they're in the building. They could be standing next to you. They almost have what they want; absolute control. They shot Nick Fury. And it won't end there. If you launch those Helicarriers today, they'll be able to shoot anyone who gets in their way. Unless we stop them. I know I'm asking a lot. The price of freedom is high. It always has been. But it's the price I'm willing to pay. And if I'm the only one, then so be it. But I'm willing to bet I'm not." Sam walked over to her when she finished talking.
"Did you write that down first? Or was it off the top of your head?" he asked. Jessie chuckled. Steve put his hand on her shoulder.
"That is the most I've heard you say since New York," Hill said. Jessie smirked.
"Come on, soldiers," she said as she began walking out of the room, Steve and Sam following. They began to walk off toward the Helicarrier bay. They ran outside and noticed they began the launch.
"Hey, Serge?" Sam asked as the three ran toward the Helicarriers. "How do we know the good guys from the bad guys?"
"If they're shooting at you they're bad," she replied. Sam activated the jetpack, turning it on. The wings from it spread out like a bird. On their way down they had decided that Steve would take the first Helicarrier, Sam would take the second one, and Jessie would take the last one. Jessie and Steve jumped off of the plane platform they were on, to the runway below. Soldiers began to shoot at the two. Steve blocked the bullets with his shield as Jessie sniped them. They hid behind supplies. A soldier came up next to them and Jessie punched him, knocking him out. She took a grenade, pulling the pin out, and throwing it at the three soldiers running toward them. Sam began flying up toward the second Helicarrier, trying to land on the top of it, only to end up being shot at.
"Hey, Serge," he began saying through the earpiece. "I found those bad guys you were talking about."
"You okay?" Steve asked.
"Not dead yet." Sam got to the second Helicarrier. "Alright, Cap, I'm in." A Quinjet flew up and began shooting at him. He flew to the end of the runway and jumped off, making the Quinjet follow him and shoot the glass of the room underneath the Helicarrier. Jessie fought with Steve on his way to the first Helicarrier.
"Eight minutes, Serge," Agent Hill said.
"Got it," Jessie replied. Sam helped Steve get to the first Helicarrier, replacing the chip with the one Nick provided. Sam got into the second Helicarrier.
"I'm in," he spoke. He replaced the chip in the lock and began to fly away.
"Two down, one to go," Maria said.
"Last one, guys," Jessie spoke up. "My time to shine." Jessie noticed the planes on the ground runway exploding. She saw a familiar figure recognizing it to be the Winter Soldier. She was on the first Helicarrier with Steve.
"Six minutes," Maria said.
"Hey Sam? I'm gonna need a ride!"
"Roger. Let me know when you're ready." Jessie took Steve's shield and began running to the edge of the Helicarrier. Steve followed, but let her go. Two soldiers were behind them. One had a Machine Gun, the other had a Missile Launcher. They shot, but Jessie jumped before being hit.
"I just did!" she yelled jumping off of the Helicarrier. Sam flew down and grabbed her hand, flying back up. He flew towards Steve's direction, and picked him up as well, quickly flying over to the third Helicarrier.
"You know you're a lot heavier than you look," Sam said to Jessie as the three walked.
"Well I had a big breakfast," she said. "It could also be because of Steve." At that moment, Steve was kicked off of the side of the Helicarrier by the Winter Soldier. "Steve!" Jessie and Sam ran to the side. Sam was about to fly down to get Steve, but one of his wings were caught, and he was pulled back. The same thing happened with Jessie. The Winter Soldier grabbed her left arm and flipped her over his shoulder, letting go as he did. She rolled on the ground, standing up quickly, grabbing her gun and shot at the Winter Soldier. He ducked at every shot she and Sam took at him. Sam began flying away only to have his wing caught again, and being pulled down as the wing broke off. The Winter Soldier began to run at Sam, and kicked him off the Helicarrier, only to end up having to sky dive to the roof of the Triskelon. Jessie stayed hidden from the Winter Soldier.
"Cap, you okay?" Sam asked when he landed.
"Yeah," Steve replied. "I'm still on the Helicarrier. Where are you?"
"I'm grounded. The suits down. Sorry Cap."
"Don't worry, we got it. Jess, where are you?"
"Still hiding on the runway," she said quietly. "I don't want to be caught." She was wrong at that part. Winter Soldier saw her, and pushed her out of her hiding spot toward the edge. She looked at him, blocking the heavy blows he was throwing with the shield, but failed when she was pushed off of the Helicarrier. Lucky for her, Steve noticed her and caught her arm before she could fall any farther.
"You don't want to be caught?" he asked. Jessie looked at him and was going to thank him, but he stopped her. "Don't worry about it. Go, I ask Nat to get me when she's done." Jessie nodded and began to head to the chamber of the Helicarrier where the chips were located. Once she got there, she was stopped by the Winter Soldier. He stared Jessie down.
"People are gonna die, Buck," she said. He stayed quiet. "I can't let that happen. Please don't make me do this." She threw the shield at him only to have him block it with his left arm and fly back to her. She caught it before it fell. He began shooting at her, but she blocked the bullet. Jessie punched him, making him fly back. He took out a knife and tried to cut Jessie with it, throwing punches at her as well. She blocked all of them, throwing punches in his direction. She kicked him to the side. Quickly, Jessie typed the code to the chamber where the chips were while he was out of the way. He ran back at her, still trying to stab her. Every punch she threw at him, he blocked. Jessie quickly removed the chip from the ship, putting it in a supply pouch, getting the new one out, only to end up being pushed off the side by the Winter Soldier and dropping the shield and the microchip. He punched her, making her slide back. She quickly grabbed the chip as she stood up, only to be punched again, dropping it. She punched him making him fall off the platform they were on, jumping down after him.
Jessie grabbed the shield as she landed and threw it at the Winter Soldier. He caught it and threw it at Jessie as she ran to grab the chip. It hit her in the back, knocking her down. She grabbed it, blocking bullets with it as he shot at her. She threw the shield at him only to have it be hit out of the air. He took out a knife and began fighting her again, this time stabbing her in the arm. She tried to throw a punch at him only to have it be blocked and have her pushed to the side. She pulled the knife out of her arm and saw the Winter Soldier grab the chip. She ran to him and picked him up by the neck with her left arm. She slammed him down, getting a strong hold on his right arm. She pushed his head away preventing him from being able to punch her.
"Drop it!" she ordered. "Drop it!" She twisted his arm, breaking it, earning a cry of pain come from the man she was fighting. She dropped to her back, pulling him down with her and wrapped her arm around the front of his neck. He tried to move her left hand only to have it be locked under her leg, preventing him from doing anything else. Jessie strangled him just enough to make him pass out at the loss of oxygen. He dropped the chip. Jessie pushed the Winter Soldier off of her, grabbing the chip and getting up. Along the way, she was shot in the leg. Jessie made her way back up to the bridge. Once she got up to the bridge, Maria spoke up with the countdown.
"30 seconds, Serge," she said. Jessie tried to say something trying to get the chip out of her pocket and into the slot only to end up being shot in the stomach from the back. Jessie fell.
Jessie could hear the countdown from the Hellicarriers control room. She managed to get enough strength to stand up and place the chip in before the countdown hit one. "Charlie in lock."
"Okay Serge, get out of there."
"Fire now."
"But Jess-"
"Do it! Do it now!" The Helicarriers began to shoot at each other like battleships in the ocean. Jessie stood up, stumbling from the shooting and kept her balance up on the railing. She heard the Winter Soldier scream in pain. Jessie looked at him and saw that a beam had fallen on him, and he was unable to move it because of his broken arm. Jessie got to the level the Winter Soldier was at. She kneeled next to the beam and tried to lift it. The Soldier looked at her, slightly confused. The Soldier moved himself out from underneath the beam, letting the female drop it. He and Jessie looked at each other.
"You know me," she said, getting up to walk over to him.
"No I don't!" he exclaimed, punching her.
"Bucky... You've known me your whole life." He back hand slapped her, making her fall back. "Your name... is James... Buchanan Barnes."
"Shut up!" He punched her, making her fall back again. She let go of the shield, letting it fall through the broken window into the water then took off her jacket revealing her metal arm.
"I'm not gonna fight you... You're my friend." Bucky got upset and ran at her, pushing her down, and getting on top of her.
"You're my mission." He punched her repeatedly saying "You're my mission." He was about to punch her again, but stopped at the sight of her face and what she had to say next.
"Then finish it... 'Cause, I'm with you... till the end of the line." He looked at her, tears in his eyes, and in horror. Another beam fell, breaking the glass underneath them. Bucky took a hold of the beam that was connected to the glass and still connected to the wall. He would've grabbed for Jessie's hand before she could fall, but couldn't because of his broken arm. Jessie had passed out while falling into the water. Bucky dived into the water after her, grabbing a hold of her shirt and swimming back to shore. He let go of her shirt, making her lay on the ground. He looked at her for about five seconds as if memorizing her face before walking off.
Jessie woke up to the sound of jazz music. She looked around to find herself in a hospital room. Sam was sitting in a chair reading a magazine. Jessie closed her eyes after resting her head back onto the pillow.
"On your left."
