"Yaoyorozu-chan!"
14:51, 2 May 2022~Shoto~
God, I miss Yaoyorozu.
I told Father I wouldn't be seeing her anymore.
He said, "Good. Now, maybe, you'll have your head in the game when training. I noticed you're slow, Shoto."
In that moment, I had a strong urge to punch his face in. Maybe I should have went for it.
"Hey, Shoto."
"Natsuo."
Note: Just know, in the show, Natsuo and Shoto don't nearly talk this much but it works for my story.
"You seem more down than usual. And you're hard to read and a little dense, so I know something's up. So tell me."
Everyone's been saying I'm dense lately.
"I told my friend Yaoyorozu that we should discontinue our friendship. Our classmates have been teasing us and it makes me think I am doing something wrong. I have not had many friends and I don't know where I'm being friendly and when I'm crossing a line."
"Oh, I see." Natsuo strokes his chin. "Is-- Is Yaoyorozu a girl?"
"Why does everyone keep asking me that?" I complain, though only Father has asked before.
"They're not... is it a guy, Shoto?"
"What?! No!" My knee-jerk response is louder than I expected. "No... Yaoyorozu Momo is a girl."
"Just making sure, Father would not be pleased."
"Who cares if he's pleased. If I was gay, I wouldn't give a damn what he thinks. And I'm not straight because he wants me to be, either."
"Did you all get into it today?"
"He's glad that Yaoyorozu's not around anymore," I cross my arms.
"Of course he is." Natsuo's face turns sour and he looks to the side for a bit before looking back at me.
"You know what I think?" Natsuo asks.
"Hmm?"
"If Yaoyorozu didn't say she doesn't wanna be friends with you, then I don't think you're doing anything to make her uncomfortable."
~Momo~
I am so uncomfortable right now.
And between us, I hate my mother. She's making me do yoga and right now I'm in something she's calling the canoe pose.
I don't think clenching my stomach like this is good while I'm on my period, but I doubt my mother cares.
She says, "Whatever happened to that Todoroki boy? You told me you two were friends."
My eyes sting with tears at the mention of him. "We can't be friends anymore."
--
"Uncomfortable. I think I may be making you uncomfortable."
"Todoroki-san, that's just not true. You don't make me uncomfortable in any way." I love being around him. He's a good friend.
But, I am starting to think of him as more.
This worries me because I barely thought he'd be my friend, and he did, but there's no way he wants to date me! Even the way he's talking to me right now, he wants to be my friend and nothing else.
"On second thought, maybe we should stay away from each other for a bit..."
--
I agreed because I do like him now. And I know he doesn't want to date me. So, what I did is best because as long as I'm friends with Todoroki, I'll be mad that we can't be more.
Of course, I say none of this to Mom. She would just ask me rapid-fire questions and never let me breathe. That's her way.
"Do you like him, Momo?"
But, of course, mothers have just got to have the "Mommy Intuition".
"I do... that's why I stopped being his friend."
"Please Momo, don't do drugs, it's not good for your health... physical or mental, honey." Mom makes a face at me. "And that goes for drinking, too."
"Mom, I'm not drunk! As long as I'm his friend, I'll want to be more and I know that's not what he wants, so..." I trail off, gripping my elbows and melting into my misery.
"And how do you know such?" My mother stares at me. "Momo, don't assume others' feelings. The only thing you can do is ask. If he says no, then I'm sorry, but he could say yes. You're not in his head and you don't know what he wants."
This time, Mom's words hit me harder than ever before. I blink once, realizing she's right.
"You're right, Mom! I'm going to ask him when I get back to school!"
"There's my happy Momo." She scoops me up into a hug and softly chuckles. "You remind me of myself at that age. I drove my mother to the brink of insanity."
--
When I get to school on Monday, I look around for Todoroki. I can't find him anywhere. I finally find him when I get to my seat, but I can't even say good morning before Mr. Aizawa gives the announcement about our First Term Final Exams.
Not the academic part, but the hero part...
--
Drat. Drat. DRAT! DRAT!!!
Todoroki and I are paired to go up against Mr. Aizawa! As if things couldn't possible get any worse!
How am I going to focus on winning this battle if I'm grouped with the guy I want to confess to? It's like these teachers hate me.
~Shoto~
I think... we won. Yaoyorozu seemed to be distracted the entire time, but once again, her intelligence and strength shone through.
I really admire her.
"Oi! Todoroki! Looks like Aizawa ships it, too!"
I am not concerned with Bakugo's taunting today, for whatever reason. "You're just mad you're not the center of attention."
"WHAT?!! F--K YOURSELF, A--HOLE!"
I walk away, knowing in this moment that there's nothing Bakugo can do to me.
--
When I get home today, Fuyumi is in the kitchen. She is making soba. My nostrils flare at the familiar aroma.
"I knew that'd get you over here," Fuyumi smiles.
She scoops me into a hug and kisses my forehead. "How was your day?"
"It was alright," I refuse to say the word mid. "I still miss Yaoyorozu."
"You know, you talk a lot about this Yaoyorozu girl. This is the fifth time I've heard you mention her this week," Fuyumi looks at me with a knowing smirk.
"Why does everyone act like this? Act like I want a relationship with Yaoyorozu... that isn't just friendship?"
"I think you don't understand because you don't understand what goes on in a romantic relationship that isn't, well... marriage."
She's right. I've been so frustrated and confused about the teasing because I don't understand it.
"Then..." I pull up a chair in front of her. "Tell me."
--
I have a crush on Yaoyorozu.
Damn.
~Momo~
On Saturday, I knock on Todoroki's door hesitantly. I texted him today but he did not respond. I'm wearing my favorite blouse and skirt and I'm rubbing my fingers across each other anxiously.
Finally, someone answers the door. A girl with mostly white hair excepting a few streaks of red is smiling at me. "Are you Yaoyorozu?"
Butterflies invite themselves into my stomach at the realization that Todoroki's been talking about me at home.
"Well, let me get Shoto. Come in!"
I walk into the Todoroki home and kick off my shoes. I stand, just as anxious as a person about to get beheaded.
"Fuyumi, who would be-- Yaoyorozu!"
Todoroki's face has taken on an expression of shock. I miss seeing other expressions in his face and I cannot help but chuckle.
"I'll leave you two alone." Fuyumi grins and runs off.
"Come," Todoroki takes my hand and leads me to a couch. I sit there and blush instantly. I snatch my hand from his to hide it, but he takes my hand away from my face.
"I like it when you do that."
"Do what? Blush? That's most embarrassing."
"I don't know, I always found it beautiful." Todoroki offers a small grin. My face takes on a deeper shade of red.
"I came here to... to..." I look around for anything to save me from this pitiful situation. I mentally curse myself for coming here today. "The weather sure is nice..."
"What is it, Yaoyorozu-chan?" He cocks his head to the side.
He's never called me by an honorific before. I fold my hands proper-like and smile. "Where's that coming from?"
He rubs the back of his neck and says, "I just noticed you're always calling me 'Todoroki-san' and I've never called you anything of the sort. I'd also like if you just call me Todoroki or 'Todoroki-kun' from now on."
"Sure, Todoroki." I want to kick myself, I'm so happy. I may need drugs. (Sorry, Mom!)
"I came to confess to you." The words tumble from my lips and I have no way to stop them.
"Confess... what?"
"I like you, Todoroki. As more a friend. I realized it that day when you had the fever," I keep my head down, refusing to look him in the eyes.
But when I finally look up, he's smiling.
"I like you, too, Yaoyorozu-chan." He looks like a little boy at a candy store.
I cover my mouth and look away as the tears well up. All this time I was fretting all over myself because I thought Todoroki would never be interested in me. But I was wrong because he does like me too.
"Do you want to go out... on a date, Yaoyorozu-chan?"
Do I?
Um, yes!
"Of course I do, Todoroki-kun!" I throw my arms around his neck and laugh happily. He laughs as well and in no time at all, we sound like deranged people.
--
When I leave, Fuyumi sends me with some soba to take home with me. "Arigato, Todoroki-chan," I thank her.
"No problem! Hope to see you soon, Yaoyorozu!"
We bow to each other and Todoroki follows me outside to say goodbye.
"Thank you for coming here today. I never confessed to you because I wasn't sure what my feelings were."
That much I had sorta figured.
He hugs me and I hug him back. After a few moments, we pull away.
"Sayonara, Yaoyorozu-chan."
I lift my face to Todoroki and plant a kiss on his right cheek. "Sayonara."
--
Once I get home, I rush to my phone and change Todoroki's Contact ID to Todoroki❤️. Who cares if someone sees it?
Then, I start a video call with the girls in my text group "The Gorlz" (Ashido's idea, not mine).
"Yo." (Ashido)
"Hi, Yao-Momo." (Uraraka)
"How are you guys?" (Tsu)
"What's up?" (Jiro)
"Hey-Hey!" (Hagakure)
"The best thing just happened to me!!!"
