Next day, after school, Esined
"Mr. T," I said, peeping my head through the door.
"Come in," he said.
I walked in, with my mama behind me.
He looked up, staring at my mama.
"This is my mama. Mama this is-"
"Brandon?" my mama questioned.
"Eiram?"
She smiled and so did he.
"I guess I don't have to introduce you two," I laughed as they hugged each other.
"It's been years," he couldn't stop smiling.
"It's sure has been," she said.
"Wow. This is crazy. I was just thinking about you the other day," he chuckled. "I was going through my yearbook and saw you. You look great,"
"Thank you. You don't look too bad yourself," she said.
"You still have that accent," he smiled.
"I don't think it's gonna go anywhere," she laughed and so did he. "Yours sure did,"
"Well, you know. Some people travel and lose their accent when they pick up on others,"
They began to catch up and I stood there, just listening to them. It was nice to know that they already knew each other.
"So you're this teacher my Essy has been telling me about?" she asked.
"I guess so,"
"I just wanted to say thank you for everything you've done for her. I really appreciate it,"
"It's no problem at all,"
"You were always helpful,"
"Whenever I could and can be," he smiled.
"We've got to get going, but it was really great to see you again,"
"I can walk you both out, I'm about ready to go,"
"Okay," she said.
We waited for him as he put on his jacket. He grabbed his suitcase and held the door open for us to leave. We all walked through the hallways to leave the school and they still were talking to each other. It seemed as if they had been really close before. They made sure to exchange numbers and hug again before he left.
As we were waiting on August, I heard a truck door slam.
I looked up, seeing my dad. "Mama," I said.
She looked up. "Come on," she rushed me to go back into the school.
We were making our way back up the steps. I felt a tight grip on my arm. He pulled me back to him.
"You think you can just up and leave without me finding you? Huh?" he shook me, holding something up to my neck. All of the liquor on his breath was like a smack to the face.
I looked down and saw something shiny and sharp in his hand.
"Mama move!" I yelled and he pushed me roughly onto the stairs. I felt a crack in my arm as my elbow hit directly on the cold and hard concrete. I screamed in pain and immediately began to cry.
I noticed that he was making his way over to her. I found the strength to get up. I heard the sound of spray and she kicked him. I noticed him tumbling down the school steps and he laid on his back with his head cocked to the side.
"You okay, Essy?" she asked, panicking as a man came outside.
He called 911 and tried to help us calm down.
Tears streamed down my cheeks as I still tried to piece together what had just happened. I tried to deal with the pain in my arm, but I couldn't. I stared at my dad's motionless body and blocked out everything around me.
I was lost for words and staring so hard at him that I didn't notice when the ambulance and police showed up.
I was put into the back of an ambulance truck with my mama as they cared for her. I watched them wake my dad back to consciousness and placed him in handcuffs.
I felt a sharp pain in my arm, bringing me back to reality.
I cried in pain through the whole ride to the hospital.
Later that evening
I blinked open my eyes to a bright hospital room. I looked at my arm, seeing a cast. I frowned and looked around.
No one was in the room with me and it made me feel worried.
The door opened and August came in. He sat on my bed and put his arms around me. He kissed my forehead and rubbed my shoulder.
"I'm so happy you're okay," he mumbled with his lips on my forehead. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there. I should have showed up on time,"
"It's not your fault, baby," I said.
"How does your arm feel?"
"It hurts a lot," I sighed.
"I can't believe he did that," he shook his head. "He's crazy,"
"It was so unexpected too. He literally came out of nowhere... Where's my mama?"
"She just got stitches," he said.
"Why?" I frowned.
"She had a pretty big gash on her arm from tryna block him. He got her neck a lil too. She ain't even notice how bad it was because she was worried about you,"
"Is she okay?" I asked, trying to hold back my tears.
"She's fine. The baby is fine too. They suggested dat she rests, so she'll be hea in town fa a few mo' days,"
"I should have defended her better. Is it my fault?" I bit in my bottom lip.
"Baybeh, you couldn't defend her even if you wanted to. He broke yo arm. Nothin' is your fault. You ain't know he was gon' show up, actin' crazy. Only he can be blamed fa this. Good thing is dat y'all still hea. You did what you could," he wiped my tears from my cheeks. "You hea' me?"
I nodded and he leaned down and kissed my lips.
"He done hurt my la baybeh's arm. If he wasn't goin' ta jail, I'd handle his ass,"
"He's going to jail?"
"Yeah. Yo mama pressin' charges. I hope his ass get a lot of charges. He had warrants out fa his arrest anyway,"
"Me too," I mumbled.
For my time being in the hospital, August sat by my side in the bed with his arms around me. We waited for me to be able to get discharged. I ended up snuggling against him. I laid my head on his chest and looked up at him often.
It had been a long wait since it seemed to be busy. I hadn't seen a doctor for another twenty minutes. When they finally came it, I hoped that it would be brief so I could see my mama. He went over with me how long I'd have on my cast and how to do my daily activities and such with it.
I was more than happy to leave the hospital. I sat in the passenger seat of August's car and my mama say in the back. It was a silent ride because there wasn't much to be said.
When we got home, I just wanted to be alone. I needed time to process it all. I felt bad because it seemed like August just wanted to comfort me, but I didn't want him to yet.
"Are you pushin' me away?" he asked.
"No. I just don't want to be around anyone right now," I said softly.
He frowned. "Okay... You'll talk ta me when you're ready?"
"I'll talk to you when I'm ready," I assured him.
"Okay," he turned away.
I grabbed his hand. "Hey hey. We're good, okay? I just need some time. It's not you. I'm just in shock. We're good, baby,"
He nodded. "I understand,"
I gave him a hug and he hugged me back. I got on my tip toes and he leaned down, meeting me halfway for a kiss. "Thanks for understanding,"
"Yep," he mumbled before walking off.
It was clear that he was feeling some type of way, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to ask him about it.
I decided against it and closed my bedroom door. I sat on my bed and closed my eyes. When I closed my eyes, I felt like I was playing back today's events. I could see him coming towards me with that knife and then him pushing me that hard.
I just didn't understand why that happened and I wanted to know why.
2 days later at the airport, Esined
When they called my mama's flight, I was ready to burst into tears, but I held them back.
"Mama, I'm gonna miss you," I whined, hugging her.
"I'll miss you too," she kissed my forehead. "I love you, Essy,"
"I love you more, Mama. Don't forget to call me when you land,"
"I won't," she said. "Cheer up, baby," she pushed up my cheeks, trying to make me smile.
My face remained with a pout.
"My baby," she sighed, rubbing my back. "I'll see you again, okay?"
"Okay,"
"Stop with the sad look," she said.
"I don't have a sad look,"
"Yes you do," she laughed before imitating my face.
I laughed a little.
She said her goodbyes to everyone else, but Mel leaned down and whispered something in her ear. She nodded and they hugged.
"Please keep my baby safe, you two," she told August and Mel.
"We will," August hugged her. "Take care of ya self and keep lil man safe," he said.
"I will," she smiled. She came back over and hugged me once again before leaving for her flight.
I felt like my happiness left with her.
August and I rode here together while the rest of the family rode with Mel and Viola.
Our car ride was silent because we weren't really talking. I didn't know why we weren't talking and it was upsetting me. The only time he'd talk to me was to make sure I was okay, but we weren't talking like we usually did. He seemed distant.
"August, are you okay?" I looked at him as he drove.
He stayed quiet.
"Babe," I said.
He still didn't say a word or even glance at me.
I sighed and let it go. This is how it has been going with him lately. After I got out of my mood of not wanting to be around anyone, it seemed like he got into his. His was more of just ignoring me only. He would talk to everyone else around the house, but when I'd come into the room, he'd leave or it'd get quiet.
When we got home, I got out of the car and went into the house, going straight to my room.
I made sure all of my homework was completed and I began to go over the subjects I needed to tutor my students tomorrow. I had been getting a lot more students that needed a tutor, so I'd stay almost two to four hours after school everyday now and my weekends were filling up also. By time I got home, I'd just take a shower and go to sleep.
I stood up and went to August's door. I knocked and he said come in. I went in closed the door softly behind me.
"Can we talk?" I asked.
"Oh. You got time ta talk to me now?" he let out a bitter chuckle.
I was taken back by his rudeness. "So that's what this is about?"
He continued tapping on his phone.
"August," I said.
"What?"
"I'm trying to fix whatever this is. Can you cooperate with me or at least put your phone down and give me your attention?"
He put his phone down and looked at me. "You got my attention,"
"Do you want me to drop some students?" I asked.
"Why would you do dat?"
"So we can spend more time together. Is that not what you want?"
"I want you ta stop blowin' me off when you get home,"
"I don't blow you off. I try to talk to you and you blow me off. I get tired after tutoring all day. I can't control that,"
He sucked his teeth. "You could have at least tried ta make a lil time fa me. We ain't spoke since that shit happened a few days ago,"
"Don't say that like I haven't tried speaking to you at all,"
"You haven't,"
"Really? What do you do when I try to talk to you?"
He stayed quiet.
"That's what you do. You get quiet. Every time I come into the room you either get quiet or you leave. Why? What did I do?"
"You be actin' like you ain't got time fa me, so," he shrugged. "I guess I ain't got time fa you now,"
"So this is how it's gonna be?"
"You tell me,"
"No, you tell me since you wanna assume and ignore me for two days. Seems like you're out here making decisions in our relationship without consulting it with me,"
He thought for a moment. "Yeah. It's like dat,"
I cleared my throat. "Okay. Cool. Nice to know where we stand," I left his room and closed the door.
I went to my room and stayed there for a few hours. I noticed my self becoming overly emotional and a few tears fell down my face. I wiped them and sighed.
I didn't like how things had gotten bad between us within two days.
August
I sat on my bed, scrollin' on my phone when Mel came in without knockin'.
"It'd be cool if you knocked next time," I said.
"It'd be cool if you stopped bein' a dick ta yo girlfriend," he took my phone and put it in his pocket.
"Mane, you comin' in hea too? Viola already got on me about it,"
"Then clearly she ain't say enough ta get yo ass outta dis room and goin' ta talk to Es. I'ma keep it real, you trippin'. You doin' too much and you pissin' me off now," he said, starin' directly into my eyes. "You need ta let dat hurt go, put yo pride aside and go talk ta yo girl. She in her room, ballin' her eyes out 'cause of you. She been at dat fa almost ten minutes,"
"She cryin'?" I asked.
"Ain't dat what I just said? You'd know if you wasn't in hea bein' childish. You bein' bitta 'cause she outchea tryna stack a lil money wit her tutorin'. She ain't ignorin' you on purpose. She got a job and she gettin' busy. She still tryna make time fa you and you bein' petty,"
I listened to every word he said.
"Stop treatin' her how you should have treated Chantelle," he said. "I swear if Esined cry again because of you, I'ma slap the hell outta you, ya heard me?"
"Yeah. I hea' you,"
"Go apologize ta her and mean it. You know you down bad fa dat,"
I stood up and fixed my joggers befo' followin' behind him.
"Mean it," he reminded me as I knocked on her door. He gave me back my phone.
He went downstairs and Esined opened her door.
"Can I come in?" I asked.
She let me in and closed the door behind us.
We sat on the bed and I opened my ta speak, but she started talking.
"I-uh," She kept her head down. "I'm sorry," she said quietly. "I didn't know that was how you felt and I should have spent time with you. I guess that when I'm stressed or sad about anything, I kind of unintentionally push people away and become a workaholic. I should have thought about your feelings,"
"You have nothin' ta be sorry about. I had no right ta speak to you how I did. It was so unnecessary fa me ta hurt yo feelings like dat just because I was assumin' stuff. I'm really sorry, baybeh. And I mean dat. I was wrong ta ignore you and treat you like you didn't matter ta me," I said, holdin' her hands.
She looked at me and I wiped her tear. "It's okay,"
"It's not okay. I guess I don't like when I can't be around you as much as I want too. I get clingy and needy sometimes. Especially when I know dat you're sad and don't wanna talk, not even ta me," I explained.
"I don't mean to shut you out,"
"I know. I feel like I need ta know how you feel all the time because if I don't know, I start ta feel like I'm not what you want, we losin' touch, or somebody else got yo attention... I don't know why I'm insecure like dis. I'm sorry. I just feel replaceable sometimes,"
"I told you that you've got me. You're all I want. No one else has my eyes, August. I'm not like her and I'd never hurt you like that. I promise,"
"I know," I mumbled. "I'm really sorry. I'm sorry for hurtin' your feelings and bein' mean ta you, Es. You forgive me?"
She nodded. "Yeah,"
I opened my arms and she hugged me. I rubbed her back and kissed the top of her head. "I'll make up fa it. Me and you Saturday, okay?"
"Okay,"
"Just me and my baybeh. Our day,"
She smiled. "Just us,"
We sat like this for a moment and I enjoyed it.
I still felt horrible fa how I treated her. I was bein' over dramatic and stupid earlier. I let my insecurities get the best of me and I could have ruined everything fa no reason.
I looked at Esined and she was already lookin' at me. "You so weird,"
"How?" she asked.
"You always starin' at me,"
"I really like your face,"
"Weirdo,"
She straight faced me and tried to get out of my arms.
I held her tighter.
"Let me go,"
"You ain't goin' nowhere. Chill out,"
She covered her mouth and yawned. "I wanna lay down,"
"Lay down,"
"If you'd let me go, I could," she said.
I let her go and she laid down. I stood up.
"Night," she said.
"I'm not leavin'," I took off my shirt and climbed into bed with her.
"What do you think you're doing?"
"Layin' wit my baybeh," I pulled her to me and rest my hand on her lower back, lettin' my hand travel down a lil furtha.
"August, do you know where your hand is?"
"I know where it's at. You mind?"
"No,"
"Good,"
"You aren't supposed to be in here right now,"
"I don't care," I mumbled. I rubbed her bottom and cupped it softly.
She ain't have much, but it was enough fa me.
"What are you grabbing? There's nothing there," she frowned.
"You got a lil somethin' goin' on, baybeh. It's enough. All booties need love,"
She laughed. "You're so weird,"
"I know," I stared at her lips. "How's tutorin' goin'?"
"You'd never believe who I have as a student,"
"Who?"
"Keenon. Get this, his grades are improving and he is actually paying attention now,"
I looked at her. "Is dat right?"
"Yeah,"
"He ain't tryna flirt or nothin'?"
"He was on the first day, but then he apologized the next day and admitted he was out of line,"
"You wasn't gon' tell me about dat?"
"I didn't want things to get out of hand and I thought I handled it pretty well. I was straight forward with him and told him not to asked about my personal life,"
"Okay,"
"Come on, babe. Don't start acting like that again,"
"I'm not," I chuckled, shakin' off the feelin'. "How ya arm feel?" I switched the subject.
"Like I'm carrying a brick in a sling. The cast is so heavy,"
"I know how you feel. Travis broke my arm when I was younger and they had a big ole cast on my lil scrawny ass,"
She laughed. "He broke it on purpose?"
"We was play fightin' and it got serious,"
"He's so mean," she laughed more.
"The dudes was on my head at school, but the ladies loved it. Had them carryin' my shit and feedin' me lunch. Niggas was tryna get they arm broke afta dat. Comin' ta school wit they arms wrapped or in a sling," I laughed.
"Just a bunch of copy cats," she said.
"Yeah. Was all laughin' at me then wanted ta jock,"
"Lame asses," she mumbled.
I looked at her shocked and she covered her mouth. "Did you just curse?"
"No no. Please don't tell anyone I said that. Keep that between us, okay?" she was talkin' so fast.
I busted out laughin'. "Baybeh, what is goin' on? Is dat really you in there or is dat me?" I touched her forehead. "You sick?"
"Oh leave me alone," she turned away from me.
I laughed harder and put my arms around her. "It's okay baybeh. We all cursed or started cursin' at one point. Don't be ashamed,"
"The lord is gonna strike me," she mumbled.
I tucked in my lips. "He'll forgive you. You see how I am. I'm still hea, right?"
"Yeah,"
"Don't be so tight about it, okay? You still a good and innocent girl," I kissed her cheek.
"Can I tell you something?"
"Tell me,"
"I wanna be bad sometimes,"
I chuckled. "How?"
"It's too embarrassing to say,"
"C'mon. I'm not gonna judge you,"
"I had a nasty dream the other night..." she said quietly.
"Tell me about it,"
"Well... I thought I was home alone, but I wasn't. You were there. I was swimming and you kept on messing with me. I convinced you to get in and we were being playful. You pulled the string on my top and then things started happening," she shrugged a little. "We did some things in the pool house that we shouldn't have been doing,"
"Hmm... Dat sounds interestin'. You dream like dat a lot?"
"I just started dreaming like that... Ever since you told me that thing that one day and then Viola showed me that video, my mind hasn't been the same since," she sighed. "I'm sorry for being weird. I know it may not be attractive to hear your girlfriend saying things like this,"
I chuckled. "Oh. It's attractive. Don't feel weird, okay? I have dreams like that too,"
"You do?"
"All the time,"
"Really? How does yours usually go?"
"I'm not sure if you're ready ta hear all dat now,"
"August, I told you mine. Now I wanna hear yours,"
"Mine always start of like this, but we'd be home alone. We'd be laid up like this and then things get interestin'. Our simple kiss leads ta a lot. I lead you in by kissin' on your jawline and neck, like this," I kissed her jaw down to her neck.
She cleared her throat. "What else do you do?"
"Well. That video dat Viola showed you happens between us. You taste good too. After I get you all ready, we get down ta business. I'm in between your legs and you grippin' the sheets, beggin' me ta go deeper. You moanin' my name and wrappin' ya legs around my waist. Scratchin' up my back as I please you,"
She cleared her throat and moved a lil.
"I mean, but dats just the simplest parts of it all. I enjoy the small moans and gasps from you when I put the tip-"
"August," she whispered.
"What?"
"Stop,"
"Hey. You said you wanted ta know," I chuckled.
"I know what I said, but it's getting hot in here,"
"I don't think it's hot. It may just be you,"
"You aren't hot?"
"Esined, you're turned on. That happens,"
"No wonder why I sweat when I have dreams like that," she mumbled.
I chuckled.
She looked at the clock. "You need to go back to your room, nasty boy. Your mama is gonna be mad if she catches you in here,"
"You right," I got up and so did she.
She walked me over to the door. "Goodnight,"
I leaned down and we kissed softly. "Goodnight baybeh. Dream good," I chuckled.
She playfully rolled her eyes. "Whatever,"
We shared anotha kiss befo' I snuck out of her room and went back ta mine.
Saturday, Esined
I was up and getting ready to go to Oliver's house. I pulled my hair into a ponytail and grabbed my backpack. I went to Viola's room and she got up. She drove me to Oliver's house.
"If August asks where I am, tell him I had you take me to a students house because he was asleep,"
"I got you. What time do you want me to pick you up?"
"I'll call you from his phone or something,"
"Okay," she said. "See you later,"
"See you," I got out of her car and went up Oliver's door. When I went in, Viola pulled off. "Hey," I smiled.
"Hey," he said.
"Nice place," I complimented.
His house was very fancy and organized. It gave me artsy vibe. There were modeling pictures of him in frames around his home. There was also family portraits around.
"We can study in the dining room. Are you thirsty or hungry?" he asked as I followed behind me.
"No. Thanks for asking," I said.
We sat at the table together and got right to work. We had finished what we needed to get done within two hours. We began to discuss modeling and life in general. We were getting along nicely, but I noticed it was going onto six o'clock.
"I should be getting home," I said.
"You want me to take you home?"
"Sure," I said. "Thank you,"
We went to get into his car and I gave him the address.
"Oh, you have money," he laughed and he put the address into the navigation.
"I don't," I laughed.
"I heard that is where the rich people stay,"
"Nah. Just where I'm staying for now," I admitted.
I didn't want Oliver to think I was something I wasn't.
"Oh. Stay with someone?"
"Yeah,"
"I see," he nodded and drove.
I listened to the music. It was a nice mix. It fit the perfect setting of a slow rainy day. He had great music taste.
"This is really nice," I said.
"One of my favorite mixes,"
I began to listen more as the beat transitioned into a slower beat.
Baby, you make me believe I could fall in love at firstSight , how you stopped me with yourBody, I'm under your curseBaby, I'm under your curseBaby, I'm under your curse
"What's this song?"
"Curse by The Internet. Great band,"
"I really like this song,"
"Me too," he pulled up to the gates and I put in the passcode. I leaned back in the car and pointed to which house it was.
"Thanks for dropping me off," I smiled. "It was a nice session,"
"Thank you for tutoring me and it's no problem," he dug into his wallet and put out thirty dollars my way.
"Oh no. The school pays me," I rejected.
"I know,"
"What's this for?"
"You stayed longer,"
"I can't take that. I was just doing my job,"
"And with a job, you get paid for over time. I know you put your time log as one hour, but you stayed for three hours. Don't cheat yourself. Now take this and I'll see you on Monday,"
"Okay. Thank you," I smiled and so did he.
We hugged briefly then I got out of the car.
When I got into the house, he left. I went to put up my things and then I went to August's room.
I knocked and he said come in. "Hi," I smiled.
He didn't say anything.
"You okay?"
"Great," he said.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing... I just think that it would have been nice if we could have stuck to our plans today," he shrugged. "No big deal,"
"I'm sorry. I forgot that I had to tutor Oliver today. I thought I'd be back before you woke up,"
"Oliver? You was at his house?"
"Yeah. It was a house trip. I told Viola to tell you if you asked,"
"She did tell me. I would have preferred ta hear it from you,"
"I'm not trying to argue with you right now,"
"I'm not either. I'm just saying how I feel and I don't like y'all bein' so close,"
I laughed.
"What's funny?"
"He's gay,"
He got quiet. "Oh..."
"Yup," I said. "I just love how much you trust me," I sarcastically added.
"I'm sorry. It's just-"
"I know. You need to stop comparing me to her. I wouldn't do that to you and you know that, but you can't let what she did go,"
"I know. I really need ta chill. I just get insecure. I'm sorry,"
"Look at me," I said.
He looked at me.
"No one is going to take your place. No one ever will. Stop picking fights with me when you feel threatened. Just ask me instead of assuming, okay?"
He nodded.
"Okay. Now are we gonna spend time together or are you going to be upset with me all day?"
"Spend time togetha,"
I smiled. "C'mon,"
We stood up and he followed me to the den. We chose random games to play. We listened to music together and I told him to search up the song that I heard in the car with Oliver.
He listened to it.
I hummed along and he looked at me.
"Cute self,"
I smiled and continued humming. "Baby, I'm under your curse," I sang dramatically.
He laughed a little. "Country ass,"
"Don't try it,"
"Sassy, are we?"
"I'm not sassy,"
"Okay, Whitley,"
"Take it back,"
"Nope,"
"Okay, September,"
"You disrespectful,"
We started laughing.
"You disrespected me first," I said.
"Ain't nobody tell you ta come at me sideways about my name,"
"That's strange, but unique. Like your name being August even though you were born in September,"
"Or how yo name being Denise backwards... What is the truth? You really Denise or Esined?" he asked.
"You really September or August?"
"August," he laughed.
"And I'm Esined," I said.
"You got a smart mouth sometimes,"
"So?"
He looked up at me, giving me this strange look. "Why you so mean now?"
"You're wearing off on me,"
"How?"
"You're mean,"
"No, I'm not,"
"Yes, you are,"
"Whateva,"
"Fight me," I mumbled.
"My goodness. What's goin' on witchu? Dis is Viola's doings, not mine. You actin' like her,"
"It's you, August. It's you. You're making me bad. I've never curse or had nasty dreams until I met you. I was never rude or anything,"
He started laughing. "I had another one last night,"
"August, you need to stop having those dreams," I said, shaking my head. "Tell me about it," I whispered.
"You just told me ta stop havin' those dreams then told me ta tell you about it... How Sway?"
I laughed. "I kinda like the dreams,"
He smirked. "I knew it. You a freak,"
"I'm not," I whined.
"Mhm. Come sit on my lap. Story time," he patted his lap.
I crawled over to him and sat on his lap sideways.
"Now this dream was straight up freaky," he started. "I know how you are so I'ma sugar coat it a lil bit,"
"Uh uh. Tell me everything," I said.
He looked at me, laughing. "Okay, Ms. I'm not a freak,"
I wrapped my arms around his neck and looked at him as he told me about his recent dream.
-Some of y'all have been waiting on their first argument and there it was.
