Chapter 37

15:37, 1 April 2013

Zayn POV

As I lay in bed half asleep I contemplate what to get Perrie for her birthday. It is on Sunday and it is Friday today. We’re supposed to be going to Germany for a signing today but I don’t know if that’s gonna happen. Harry has been feeling really tired for the last couple of days since the break in. They still haven’t found the girl but they know who she is. The policeman said her name was Abigail and her parents have been informed but she is still missing. There are police constantly at the Perrie and Jade’s house. Paul is staying here too and has insisted that Harry doesn’t go home on his own.

“Zayn,” Paul says as he barges open the bedroom door. “You awake?”

“Yep, but shhh, Perrie is sleeping,” I say and try to slide out of the bed without Perrie waking.

“You still up for going to Germany today?” Paul whispers as I make my way over to stand in front of him.

“I am but are you sure?” I ask, worried for our safety.

“I think it’s best if you do get out of the country. We can’t stay in this house forever and you can’t let down the fans.”

“Is Harry ok to go?” I ask, remembering that Harry still isn’t at his full health.

“Yes, he should be fine,” Paul says. “And I’ve hired a few more bodyguards, just to be safe.”

“What about Perrie? I want body guards to stay with her while I’m gone,” I say, looking over at Perrie lying innocently in bed.

“She can come too. I want to keep an eye on all of you. And it’s only for a few hours. We can keep her hidden, no one will know she’s with us,” Paul says, dispelling any worries I may have had about Perrie joining us on a promotional visit.

“Ok. I’ll get her some clothes out. We’ll be down in a bit,” I tell Paul and he leaves the room, shutting the door lightly behind him. I walk over to Perrie’s wardrobe and start picking out some clothes, making sure to be extra quiet and not to wake her. She’s cranky in a morning and I don’t want to make it worse by waking her up. She always says that she is only ever happy after 12 o’clock and I shouldn’t speak to her before that. I need to wake her up gently.

Once I’m dressed I slide under the covers and next to Perrie so I’m hugging her from behind. I kiss behind her ear and her eyes slowly start to flutter open.

“Why are you dressed?” she whispers in a croaky voice.

“Gotta go to Germany today babe,” I say, trying to keep my voice soft and soothing.

“Urgh then just go. Why are you waking me?” she says grumpily and buries her head into her pillow.

“You’re coming to,” I say and place my hand on her shoulder.

“Really?” she says, bursting into life and turning round to face me.

“Yes, now lets get ready and go downstairs. People are waiting for you,” I tell her and slide out of the bed.

As we make our way onto the private jet, I pull Perrie into the seat in front of me.  Louis and Liam sit on the other side of the isle and Niall and Harry sit behind us. It feels weird always jetting around all the time because I’d never been on a plane before One Direction. But now I guess we fly so much that I’ve gotten used to it. I still need to clench Perrie’s hand for dear life as we set off, she laughs quietly when she notices how scared I am but I don’t care. I just don’t get it. I don’t get how the plane stays in the air and I don’t trust it. I’ve seen too many action movies that include plane crashes.

“It’s okay,” Perrie says soothingly as she rubs our hands together, that always calms me down. “My brother used to get scared all the time so I get it,” she says as we are finally in the air and my ears have popped.

The fasten seat belt sign goes off and I say tell Perrie, “Come sit on my lap.” She undoes her seat belt and obliges, sitting sideways on my lap and wrapping her arm around my shoulder. I kiss her cheek and wrap my arms around her so we’re in a comfortable position to doze off. I know she’s tired so I let her doze off on my lap and I watch her peacefully.

“One of you two is always asleep,” Louis says as my arms act as some sort of cradle to Perrie.

“She’s had a rough few days,” I say, glancing at her peaceful expression.

“Is everything going to be alright Zayn?” Niall chirps up from behind me.

“Well I won’t let anything happen to Perrie or any of you and I know you wont let anything bad ever happen to me so I think we’ll be fine,” I say, smiling at Niall. Sometimes he was just so innocent and sometimes he was boisterous and Irish. But he’s still the one that needs protecting the most. We’ve always said that the thing that would make us the angriest in the world would be if someone hurt Niall.

“They’ll catch the girl Ni. Don’t worry,” Harry chimes in. The bruise on his head is still bad but the cuts are basically invisible and I’m sure anything will be covered up by make-up before we land.

“We’ve got an update,” Paul tells us from further down the carriage. “They’ve found the girl and she’s being held in jail for a few nights until her trial on whether she is granted bail.”

I smile and sigh in relief as Paul tells us the news but Harry looks less pleased. “Harry, what’s wrong? Aren’t you happy?” I ask, noticing his lack of reaction to the news.

“That girl is 14, she can’t be in jail, she won’t survive there,” he says, shocking everyone in the carriage.

“Harry, she hurt you and threatened to kill Perrie. Jail is where she belongs,” Liam says.

“She’s 14. She belongs in school and she belongs with her family, not in jail,” Harry says. Louis is clearly getting irritated by what Harry is saying and well, we all are. I would continue to argue with Harry but I don’t want to wake up Perrie. Maybe he’ll see sense eventually and realize that this girl is dangerous if she isn’t in jail. Nobody can hurt my best friend and threaten my girlfriend without being punished, that’s for sure.

We sit in silence for a while until the fasten seat belt sign goes on. “Perrie,” I say, shaking her to wake her up. “We’re landing babe,” I say and she gets out of my lap and sits back in her seat, doing up her seat belt. As we land I hold Perrie’s hand again but this time my breathing starts to get unsteady. Landing is the worst part. I squeeze Perrie’s hands to tightly and she quickly moves them away and holds onto my legs instead. We land and it’s fine, it’s actually the best landing I’ve ever had, usually I’m a lot more panicked but not this time.

“Come on,” Perrie says as she gets up out of her seat and head towards the exit of the plane. “Are you ok?” Perrie asks, noticing that I’m a bit quiet.

“The girls been caught, Perrie,” I tell her.

“Then why are you sad?”

“Harry doesn’t think she deserves to be in jail but she does.”

“She’s in jail?” Perrie asks, shocked.

“Yes, of course she is. She committed a crime,” I say. I don’t understand why she’s so shocked about this. That’s what happens when you commit a crime, you go to jail.

“But she was only about 14!” Perrie says, “She won’t survive in jail. She doesn’t deserve to be in jail.”

“Yes she does Perrie, what are you talking about?” I ask, walking faster than her to get slightly away from her. “She sent you a death threat and she through a rock at Harry. She deserves nothing less than jail and if I ever see her I’ll do a lot worse.”

“No you will not,” Perrie says, catching up with me. “She’s 14 and obviously there is something wrong with her. Don’t lay a hand on her. She obviously just needs love and attention.”

“Why do you always try and see the positive in people? Both you and Harry are the same. Some people are just bad and once they commit a crime, they need to be punished,” I tell her.

“Well we’re obviously not going to agree on this so lets just stop,” Perrie reasons, “Who told you about this anyway?”

“Paul,” I say and the conversation ends there.

-

It’s been a few hours since we landed in Germany and we’re just messing about backstage really. The signing is due to start in about half an hour and I’m playing a bit of football with Niall.

“So you pleased about them catching this girl then?” Niall asks me as he passes the ball.

“Yeh,” I say, concentrating on the football. “It’s a relief I guess,” I tell him as I pass the ball back.

“Where’s Hazz?” Louis asks as him and Liam step out of the backstage trailer.

“Thought he was with you,” Niall says as Louis looks around.

“Yeah, where’s Perrie?” I ask, noticing Perrie’s absence from the backstage area. I chuck Liam the ball and start looking for Perrie and Harry. “Lou, have you seen Perrie or Harry?” I ask Lou, our hairdresser.

“I saw Harry like 10 minutes ago, he was heading over there,” Lou says, pointing behind the trailer. I walk over and I first I see Harry’s curly hair. Then I get a bit closer and I can see that he is talking to Perrie.

He spots me watching them and him and Perrie quickly stop talking and start walking over. What are those to up to?
