Departure

'We should hurry.'

Light was draining overhead as the group headed towards the lightning tree, Butch was hesitant of the dimness as this would be the perfect cover for the careers.

Finnick and Butch followed the group up as Beetee reached the tree.

'Minimal charing. Excellent conductor.'

The group all gathered around as Beetee described the capabilities this next move would bring- with specific detail of just how much energy this wire would contain, enough to kill anyone in its vicinity.

Butch never once stopped holding his sickles, he'd come across the careers too many times to doubt their strategy. They were lurking, somewhere in that jungle, they had to be watching.

'Now, you girls take this wire down to the beach.' The next stage of the plan was beginning but Katniss and Peeta hesitated.

'I'll go as guard.' Peeta spoke up never breaking eye contact with his partner.

'No, I need you here to protect me.'

Butch stared at the district 12 duo, panic was running through their eyes- this was their chance to run. He needed to ensure that one of them stayed close by.

'Is there a problem here?' Finnick sensed this panic also and followed a similar strategy.

'It's his plan we all agreed to it.' Johanna seemed to become impatient as more time was being handed to the careers to escape their trap.

The group began to stand off against the other, Katniss and Peeta knew they were outnumbered so they submitted and obliged.

'No, no problem.' Katniss announced to the rest of the group before walking up to Peeta and kissing him goodbye.

'Stay alive out of there, don't have all the fun.' Butch thought he'd take the opportunity to insert a joke into the situation to Johanna, a feeble attempt to lighten the mood.

With that, the girls split off with the coil in hand, directing themselves down to the beach as the group of males broke apart.

Now was the time. Once the lighting struck, it was time to run. Butch would much rather let the arena have him then force his friends to execute him.

He stood defensively as his eyes continued to scout out the foliage. Every sound that emerged was a trigger for the boys to investigate. A loud snap could be heard not long after causing Butch and Finnick to approach.

Through the greenery something was moving, splitting the leaves apart from the nearby plants, they looked down to find one end of the coil broken in front of them.

The careers.

'Beetee stay near the tree. Peeta the careers are here.'  It only felt right to have warn the boy of his lovers danger, after all he could help the effort in keeping alive.

Without another word being said Finnick, Peeta and Butch bolted into the direction of the careers. Somewhere along the pursuit, Brutus broke off leading Peeta to chase after believing he would be the bigger threat to Katniss.

Butch and Finnick hunted down Ennoboria as Butch launched a knife, slicing into her leg causing her to tremble forward. The two boys halted and watched as she got up.

'Finnick. Go find Katniss.' Butch didn't want to admit it but he needed a moment like this, an opportunity to either die in a blaze of glory or finish what he set out to do.

'Butch, I don't think that's a good idea.'

'You know the priority, I'll keep this one distracted, I will be back before you know it.'

Finnick knew not to argue, Butch was capable of holding his own and despite his protests he was right- Katniss was the mission not each other. He broke away leaving Butch and Enoboria to face off.

'That was a stupid move. You need him to finish me.'

'Maybe so but I may surprise you.'

The two were skilled fighters, all the Capitol viewers at home were on the edge of their seats awaiting for the two to fight. That's exactly what Butch was hoping for anyway, a distraction. An opportunity for the Capitol  to have their eyes away from the other tributes.

'Let's give them a good show Enoboria.'

With that the two engaged in a fiery assault- with Enoboria drawing first blood as she returned the throwing knife back in Butch's direction slicing his arm as he managed to avoid most of the damage.

Butch hacked away at her using his sickles to block any incoming pokes from her spear. The two surely testing the other in every aspect of their skill. The irony of a career being matched with a tribute from such a poor district was not something that was ignored.

After minutes had passed the two were exhausted and both had sustained injuries from the other. Enoboria launched one final knife into Butch's foot to which he was too tired to evade. He stumbled to the floor as Enoboria sat above him.

She knelt down ready to bare her teeth into the neck of the injured tribute with blood dripping from a gash on her forehead. Butch stretched his arm out as hard as he could trying to grip onto a nearby rock but Enoboria ensured to put as much weight as she could on his arms.

Her breath could be felt on Butch's next as a part of him accepted his death until a shriek could be heard followed by a cracking explosion.

The recoil barrelled through the arena, causing Enoboria to go off balance allowing Butch to wriggle under and smash the rock across her face, knocking one of her teeth out. He removed the blade from his foot as he got up waiting for her to stand- after all he may not like her that much but he couldn't deny her capabilities.

The two were ready to engage in another round until sounds of footsteps could be heard all around him.

'Peacekeepers. Enoboria we need to move.'

The duo both realised that was something catastrophic must of occurred so they dumped their weapons and ran into an opening. A swarm of peacekeepers followed afterwards as chaos could be heard around them.

Butch couldn't run long due to his injury and neither could Enoboria causing the peacekeepers to eventually catch up.

Butch spun round as he saw a death claw reaching through the burning hole in the arena. The rebellion was real.

A peacekeeper abruptly ended this realisation as the end of his gun came crashing down onto Butch's face rendering him unconscious.
