Chapter 16: Mise en Place
16:14, 10 July 2025The kitchen was quiet when Chiara walked in.
Too early for shouting. Too late for regret.
She moved with intention — every jar aligned, every towel folded, every surface wiped. Not manic, not compensating. Just... settling.
Today wasn't about fixing anyone.
It was about placing herself.
Mise en place — everything in its place.
Including her.

Sydney found her in dry storage, labeling backup containers.
"You're here early," Syd said, leaning against the doorway.
Chi smiled. "Had some thinking to do."
Sydney hesitated. "Listen... about yesterday. I should've noticed you were off. I just figured, you know, you're Chi. You always bounce."
"I don't want to be the one who always has to bounce," Chi said softly.
Sydney nodded slowly. "It's weird, right? How kitchens are full of people who forget to feed themselves."
Chi glanced over. "You, too?"
"Burned out of two restaurants before I even turned 27," Sydney admitted. "Didn't tell anyone until my mom found me asleep on a cutting board."
Chiara smiled gently. "You're not the only one trying to build something without losing yourself."
They stood there in the quiet. No rush. No pretense.
Just two women making room for each other.

Later, during prep, Carmy passed by the whiteboard and silently added a name under Kitchen Lead (Weekend):
Chiara.
No meeting. No drama. Just the name, in black marker.
Marcus spotted it first.
"About damn time," he muttered.
Tina nodded in approval. "Better than 'assistant to the brother of the owner.'"
Richie shouted from the line, "You get a raise with that title or just emotional damage?"
Chi didn't answer.
She just looked at the board — her name in Carmy's handwriting — and felt her ribs loosen.
She was in.
Officially.

She sent Luca a picture of the whiteboard during break.
Chi: Guess who's "Kitchen Lead (Weekend)" now.
mio dolce 🍰💖: Guess who's going to demand a signature on that title.
Chi: It's dry-erase marker. Doesn't count in court.
mio dolce 🍰💖: Then I'm sending a gold pen. Write your name like you mean it.

After the rush, Carmy found her wiping down the counter in silence.
"I should've asked you first," he said. "Before putting you on the board."
Chi looked up. "But you didn't."
He blinked, a little thrown.
Then she added, gently, "And that means you trust me."
He nodded. "I do."
She smiled. "I trust you too."
They didn't hug. Didn't cry. Didn't make it weird.
They just stood there, two Berzattos finally choosing each other instead of chasing ghosts.
