"Cedric!!" She squealed, dashing down the hill after the brown-haired boy. "Careful!" Cedric called back, still running ahead of her, but Sage wasn't listening. She was having too much fun, giggling and screaming as she and her best friend, Cedric Diggory, raced to the stream near Sage's house.
"Ouch!" Sage cried out in pain as the hill got too steep for her short legs, causing her to tumble over into a muddy puddle.
"Cedricc." She cried. "You were going too fast." She blamed the boy as he rushed over to help her. Sage brushed her long, tangled hair out of her eyes, dirtying her locks due to the mud that coated her arms, all the way up to her elbow.
"I'm sorry." He pouted, grabbing her hands and pulling her up. "Your knees bleeding!" He gasped as she turned her attention to her pink knees that were now decorated with fresh blood. Sage cried out in pain, apparently the sight of her injury was more agonising than the feeling itself.
"Come on." Cedric took her mud stained hand in his clean one, guiding her up the hill back to her house. Cedric and Sage were almost 8 years old, still children. Willow was a few inches taller than Cedric, something she found much joy in teasing him about.
"At least I'm still taller than you." She sniffled, pushing back her urge to cry harder with a playful grin. "I'll be taller one day!" He retorted, very obviously offended.
"Oh dear." Sage's mother rushed over to her as they reached her large estate. "She fell over." Cedric stated the obvious as the small girl resumed her crying, perhaps if she seemed distraught enough, she'd earn herself special treatment from her mother. A chocolate frog would be nice, she thought.
"Oh, I know honey, I know." She tugged Sage into the kitchen, pulling a stool out for her to sit on as she retrieved a small packet of alcohol wipes to clean up her knees. "No mummy, they hurt." Sage whined as her mother opened the packet.
"It'll just be moment honey." She smiled assuringly, placing the wipe onto her stinging knees as Sage began to cry again. "I'll get a cloth." Cedric grabbed a dirty cloth off the bench, wetting it with cold water and proceeding to swipe Sage's muddy arms with it.
He felt tears pricking his own eyes, but he blinked them back. He had never likes seeing Sage cry, it upset him.
Her mother laughed at this, Cedric clearly wasn't very experienced in cleaning up little girls' muddy elbows. "Thank you Ced." She smiled warmly at him as she found a clean cloth from under the sink, wetting it with warm water and handing it to Cedric.
"This might work a bit better." She took the boys dirty cloth, wringing it out in the sink and exiting the kitchen, though Sage knew she was most likely hiding around a corner.
Both Sage's and Cedric's families liked to spy on them when they were together, poking fun at their friendship. 'Young love.' Amos, Cedrics father, loved to joke with Sage's father.
"Thank you." Sage unwrapped a large bandaid, placing it on her injured knees. "Next time you have to wait for me, then I won't fall over." She scolded him. "You're just slow." He grinned, earning himself a light punch in the arm. "I'm still taller than you." She giggled.
----
"Have you got everything? I think we'd best go check, shouldn't-"
"It's okay, mother." Sage smiled, taking her mothers hand in her own. "I've got everything." She assured her. "Not so little anymore." Sage's father entered the room, placing a kiss on his daughters head. "Where's Sage going?" Athena skipped into the living room, where the rest of her family was standing.
"Your big sisters going to Hogwarts, Athena." Frank, Sage and Athenas father, smiled. "We'd best get going, the Diggory's will be waiting." Maia, their mother, led them out of the house. "What's Hogwarts, mummy?" Athena pestered her mother.
"It's a school for witches, you can go when you're 11, too." She told Athena as they reached the bottom of the driveway, where Amos and Cedric were waiting. "Excited for school, Sage?" Amos smiled broadly at the little girl. "Yes!" She grinned, standing beside her best friend, Cedric.
"Well I suppose we should be off now! Say your good-byes." Amos gestured at Sage as she hugged her parents, who had to work, good-bye. "And bye, Athena." Sage crouched down to her little sisters level, pulling her into a warm hug. "Can I please come, Sage?" Athena pouted.
"No, Athena, you're only 9." She told her as Amos placid a hand on her and Cedric's shoulder. "Be back in a jiffy." He told Sage's family, before apparating them to King's cross station. "Do you think we'll see Jill on the train?" Sage turned to Cedric. "I think so." He smiled as they entered the barrier onto platform 9 3/4.
"Alright, you two. Stay out of trouble." Amos let out a small sniffle, ushering us over to the train where we boarded. "And do your homework! And don't forget to eat at every mealtime!" He shouted as we got further down the train.
"Do you want to find Jill?" Cedric asked the girl as they wandered past a few compartments. "Oh, can we?" She sighed happily. "No need! Hi Sage!" A head of reddish-pink hair darted towards them, throwing herself around the smaller girl. "Jill!" Sage giggled, hugging the girl inn return.
"Should we go in here?" Cedric interrupted, and they entered into an empty compartment. "What house do you think you'll be sorted into?! I think I'll be a Gryffindor, they're really brave and cool-" Jill rambled as Sage sat down beside Cedric.
"I don't know, I think Gryffindor would be pretty cool." Sage smiled. "I'm happy with any." Cedric added. "Even Slytherin?" Jill gasped. "Even Slytherin." Cedric nodded. "Aren't Slytherins evil?" Jill stared at him. "Cedric's not evil, he wouldn't be a Slytherin!" Sage placed a protective hand on Cedrics arm.
"Slytherins aren't evil, they're misunderstood." Said Cedric. "My big sister say's they're evil." Jill retorted. "Isn't your sister a Slytherin?" Sage stared questionably at the girl. "Yes. She is a Slytherin, and she's evil." Jill looked around the compartment, as if scared she'd appear.
"Jill you haven't changed into your robes?" Cedric pointed at his, and Sage's school robes, which they had already put on. "Oh no!" She gasped, leaping from her seat and dashing out of the door, almost forgetting her robes as she left.
"Which house would you like to get in the most, Ced?" Sage asked the boy as Jill left from sight. "I think I'd like to be a Hufflepuff, most of all." He thought for a moment. "Father says they're very kind, and loyal." He added. "Then I want to be a Hufflepuff too." Sage smiled.
----
"Sage Fawley?" Professor McGonagall's loud voice boomed from the front of the Great Hall. Cedric watched from the Hufflepuff table, seeing as he had already been sorted, as his friend took a deep breath, nervously separating herself from the rest of the unsorted students, and taking a seat on the stool. Professor McGonagall placed the hat on Sage's head, and she waited anxiously as it commenced it's sorting.
"Sage Fawley, ah, yes that's easy. Hufflepuff!" the hat cried, as Cedric's chest swelled with pride. He was in the same house as his best friend. "Ceddy!" She jumped off the stool, dashing over to Cedric as the rest of Hufflepuff house congratulated her. "Ceddy, we're in the same house!" She wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him awkwardly from were they sat.
"Do you think Jill will be a Hufflepuff too?" Sage pulled away, her face returning to nervousness. "I hope so. It doesn't matter if she isn't though, she's still our friend." He smiled, and Sage felt instantly better.
"Oh look. She's being sorted now." Cedric nudged Sage, as they both watched patiently for Jill to be sorted. "Jill Garcia.. Better be, Hufflepuff!" The hat shouted as Jill frowned slightly, trueing over to the Hufflepuff table. "Jilly! You're a Hufflepuff too!" Sage beamed at her.
"I wanted to be a Gryffindor.." She pouted. "Oh, I'm sorry Jill.." Sage hugged the girl sympathetically. "Don't be sad." Said Cedric. "Hufflepuffs are the most inclusive of all houses, and they're the fairest." He explained as Jill's face lit up.
"Cedric's so good at making people feel better." Jill smiled. "Really?" He broke into a childish grin. "Thank's Jill." He thanked her as dinner commenced.
"Do you think we'll be in the same dorm?" Cedric asked Sage as they finished their dinner. "No, boys and girls have seperate dorms." Sage and Cedric frowned together. "Hey, Sage. Maybe we'll be in the same dorm!" She suggested. "Oh, I hope so." Said Sage.
"We're about to find out, come on." Cedric held his hand out for Sage as they got up from the table. "Hurry up." Jill whined as they were stuck behind a slow crowd of Ravenclaws.
"Finally." Jill sighed dramatically as they left the hall, heading downstairs at a faster pace, before reaching the common room. "Wow." Sage gasped in awe, taking in the beautiful, warm Hufflepuff common room. "It smells like Chamomile." Cedric smiled.
"Look! Look there are birds!" Jill jumped up and down as a few birds twittered from above them. "And so many plants! Look that's a Monsteria!" Sage pointed out a large green plant that sat in the corner, Sage had always loved plants.
"We're in a dorm together!" Jill squeezed Sage into a tight hug as they reached their dorm room, entering into a brightly lit room. "I want this bed." Jill ran over to the middle bed. "So I can be friends with whoever else rooms with us." She explained as a short black-haired girl entered the room.
"Hello.. I'm Olive." The girl smiled. "Oh my gosh! It's so wonderful to meet you, I'm Jill." Said Jill. "And I'm Sage." Sage crossed the room, pulling Olive into a hug. "You're a hugger." Olive blushed. "I guess I am." She smiled.
"Oh I just saw the most beautiful boy ever down stairs." Olive gasped, suddenly remembering. "Oh! Show us!" Jill clapped her hands as Olive led the three of them out onto a balcony, overlooking the rest of the common room. "He must've already gone to his dorm." Olive pouted, unable to locate the boy.
"You can point him out to us tomorrow." Jill assured Olive. "I'm tired from the train ride." Sage yawned. "I'll see you all tomorrow." She kicked her shoes off, dropping into bed without showering or changing her robes.
"Sagey, you need to at least put on your pyjamas." Jill shook her head, dragging Sage out of bed. "Fine." She frowned, digging through her suitcase until she found her sleepwear.
----
"Wake up! We have school!" Sage pulled the blankets off of Jill and Olives bed as they whined and grumbled about being woken up so early. "We can eat breakfast here, and we can go to classes, with textbooks and other students!" Sage gushed.
"At least let us get dressed." Jill complained as she and Olive trudged out of bed, changing before they left the common room. "Oh my gosh! Look!" Olive grabbed Sage and Jill's sleeves, tugging on them aggressively as she pointed across the corridor.
"That's the boy! Oh isn't he so dreamy!" She enthused. "Who?" Sage squinted, she could only see Cedric. "Him! The boy with the brown hair, and beautiful grey eyes." She pointed directly at Cedric.
"Who, Cedric?" Jill stared at her. "Is that his name? Oh my gosh he's gorgeous, do you know him?" Her eyes lit up. "Yes, we've been friends our whole lives." Said Jill. "Especially Sage and Cedric, they're inseparable."
"Oh, please introduce us!" She begged as Sage begun to feel a pang of jealousy that someone was so interested in her best friend. "Cedric!" She called, as the boy turned around, smiling as he saw her.
"Hi Sage, Jill.. And you are?" He turned to Olive who had turned red. "I'm Olive." She smiled weakly. "Nice to meet you, I'm Cedric." He smiled hesitantly at her, before locking his pinky around Sage's.
"Who are your dorm mates?" Sage turned to Cedric, eager to prove her closeness with him. "Rowan Ryder and Harper Lee." Answered Cedric as they reached the Great Hall, taking their seats.
"Oh my gosh, he was holding your hand!" Olive whispered to Sage as they began eating. "I guess so." She smiled, feeling proud that she'd proven their friendship. "Are you boyfriend and girlfriend? I don't want to intrude.." Olive's eyes widened as she considered the possibility.
"Ew no, we're best friends." Sage shook her head as Olive sighed in relief.
